Full range speakers or not and how loud

My unconfirmed answer - 90-95 dB - louder after the 4th martini. "Confirmation" possibly not required - see below. Over the years I've been a "good guesser" estimating "peak" SPL's on home audio systems. WTH does that MEAN, Ghalt??? It MEANS, that, with relatively low dynamic range rock and...

    SET amp owners thread

The gold unit looks like Fostex (I have a pair of Fostex super-tweeters). The down-facing charcol-gray - cropped at left - TAD

    SET amp owners thread

Single-ended amps are Quicksilver prototypes - never “commercial”, therefore likely to use output transformers wound at Quicksilver (once deemed “production/commercial ready”, Sanders contracts a transformer shop to wind a “commercial quantity”) Output tube is the long-defunct 8417 (I have lots...

Let's Do the First Analog Poll Tonight

Lavigne said (04-27-2010): "what are the odds someone could connect with a bunch of digital files like that?" (you asked, even if rhetorically) Well, I know a guy..... He started around 2001-02 with a friends 3000 CD Classical Collection - after much testing decided MP3 was acceptable at...

Let's Do the First Analog Poll Tonight

@ Lavigne ca. 2010 - 2000 LP's is a mere 30(ft^3) (cubic feet) - a row 30-ft long. Pack them in "one-fives" (mover lingo for 12"x12"x18" boxes), and they fit in a pickup truck bed - only need stack a few. The one-fives prevent warps.

I see Mike L already started a thread (perhaps the moderators will delete the one I started with this:) I found no thread regarding last week's release of the Beatles All-Analog Mono LP Box - so I announce it here. Details can be found as to the AAA nature of this reissue on Analog...

    Readers Digest Introduction

That Linn/ARC/Quad system: I believe Linn had only the LP-12 (arm/pickup completely up for grabs). There was only one Quad Loudspeaker (according to High Fidelity - I didn't yet know about TAS and Holt's journal) the "57" appelation didn't come around until the ESL-63 became commercial. As a...

Let's Do the First Analog Poll Tonight

A question: what sorts of stories do the jackets tell? Do you refer to liner notes? The condition of the jackets? Annotations? (the latter I have found when picking up radio station LP's at flea markets, etc.). I actually have access to a collection of files that started with 3,000 classical...

The blackest black material ever created

Sonex (half) Deafness "Must be mentally bizarre staring at that block of Vantablack" - reminds me of that stuff they use in recording studios (forget the name) - and which was once fashionable to use in live-end, dead-end listening rooms. (Sonex!!) I once stuck my (one) ear up against a...

    Advice on new room

What are the objections to isolation transformers? I can think of only one - regulation issues if the transformer is under-sized. I first became aware of their use when I corresponded with a recording engineer who said he was partly responsible for getting balanced power into the National...

Two lovely spaces and nice audio systems. Let us know when you have established your "horn and tube room"! A "warning" about the Sony 777 - two friends have retired there's due to lack of parts (Sony does not stock them).
