I guess that really doesn't matter in this case since I wouldn't be using digital out. What they seem to be doing is mashing in S/PDIF and maybe the DCX2496 will accept it as AES3. You were putting the attenuators on the digital out of the DCX2496 right...- jfw

I think I understand now, I edited my post to be a little more clear hopefully. It's basically a multi-channel DAC (firewire mode only) for stereo fronts and subs so you can do software crossover? Hmm, I had no idea such a thing existed. Interesting option though it still leaves me with having to add a preamp at the end for volume control. So the chain would consist of four components. (S/PDIF out) -> [S/PDIF to AES3 converter] -> [DCX2496] -> [preamp (2x one for strereo one for sub?)]...- jfw

I think there may be some confusion here. I intended to say I wanted a crossover to separate between the sub signal and (low + mid + high as one) for the active monitors. I'm unfamiliar with the term "external active system". Could you explain? MiniDSP - I would have to get the miniDSP / miniDIGI combo for digital in, but it doesn't have dynamic volume control on the audio out so I'd have to get a preamp. Questionable DAC quality and low resolution 48kHz...- jfw

I don't fully understand the features they offer but I assume you're talking about things like the "DEQX HDP-Express" and the "Trinnov Doremi Pegase". While they seem like nice HT pre-pros they have the problem of overkill both in terms of features and price. I don't foresee going beyond 2.1...- jfw
