    Thanks for your imformative replies. What prompted my original question was I recently bought a NOS dac that puts out only 16 bits but apparently allows 96/196 to pass thru. The interesting thing,that dac replaced an previous dac that up samples up to 24/196; the NOS dac sounded to my ears more...
