Next steps with Soundsmith Fixed Coil cartridges

I’ve spoken with Peter a number of times on the phone and at shows. He’s said the same thing to me.

Next steps with Soundsmith Fixed Coil cartridges

Me butting in. :) I have and love the Sussurro MkII (not ES) but decided to grab one of the Sussurro Golds before they vanish. Hyperion MkII suspension, boron cantilever, built by Peter himself. What's not to want? :D

J.R. we gotta talk about WallySkater

I hang my head in shame. :) I ran a bit more of a controlled test, as I didn't like what I was seeing using the curved finger lift as the anchor point for the WS yellow string. I used the soft wire, but this time was very careful for the first try in making sure the hang point for the string was...

    What Cartridge(s) Is Everyone Using

;) As we're both in the same clubs and go to the same shows, I'm guessing if he's heard it, I've heard it. :D We've heard the Van den Hul Grand Cru Elite, the Grail, a Goldfinger Statement, the latest DS Audio, one or two other carts in that range. To the general points made, it's context and a...

A good reason to try it! But... $20,000 good?

J.R. we gotta talk about WallySkater

Sorry about not attaching your link-name, J.R. I guess what I'm concerned about, though, is in the determining of the specific "number" for anti-skate as appropriate to arm length. It's recommended to be 9% for a 12" arm. If I use the soft wire to try and keep the yellow string up against the...

    What Cartridge(s) Is Everyone Using

I have a friend who just bought an AT-VM95SH - by all online accounts it’s supposed to be a great value (I haven’t heard it yet). I was a little surprised, though, when he said that it was “as good as any $20,000 cartridge”. I’m happy that he’s so pleased with his analog rig, but having never...

J.R. we gotta talk about WallySkater

Hi J.R. You may recall I bought a few of these great Wally tools from you at this year’s Florida show. I love them all (especially WallyZenith!), but I do feel there’s a range of ambiguity in the use of the WallySkater (I have the Pro). The driver behind the ambiguity is where the string with...

    Re-imagining "Class A" Amplification

Agreed, Damon. There’s something special going on with VSA speakers and this fine combination of equipment.

My friend is considering getting a new preamp

My friend has been using for over 30 years a Quicksilver Full Function preamp. I’m not a tube guy and even I like this preamp. It had been modified over time by Mike Sanders with silver wiring and Jantzen caps, among other things. But I think my friend may be finally willing to try something...

The new audiophile vinyl series The Original Source from Deutsche Grammophon (AAA)

I got my Steinberg set from Amazon today. Disappointed with the high pressing number, but visually all three records look flawless. Hope they sound that way!

    Soundsmith Sussurro MkII re-evaluated

Hmm, it's the same weight as the MkII. But yes I agree proper setup is critical for SS carts.

Sigh. I was hoping not to hear that. ;):)

    Soundsmith Sussurro MkII re-evaluated

Nice! Do you have any direct experience to be able to compare the new Gold to the previous Sussurro MkII?

    Soundsmith Sussurro MkII re-evaluated

I find that for me Peter’s cartridges are a bit harder to optimize than my Benz’s.

How long will a Tergitol mix "hold" in a UCM tank?

Oh, @Neil.Antin, one other thing. It depends. If I do a lot of cleaning in sequence over a matter of several or weeks - IOW with the cover off the tank for very long periods, then I’ll have to top off the IPA after maybe a week or so. But some factors - I have a top off jug of pre-mixed...

    Ultrasonic Cavitation & Cleaning Explained

@Neil.Antin, if I have dirty records that need a pre-clean on my vacuum RCM before going into the USM, can I do the Liquinox mix, vacuum it off, and then drop it right into the USM, or do I still need to do the water rinse before putting it into the ultrasonic?

How long will a Tergitol mix "hold" in a UCM tank?

Yes Neil I did buy an IPA hydrometer and I do check its concentration regularly. And you’re right of course - that does evaporate. :) But hmm, I hadn’t thought about the water evaporation (if of any significance) increasing the concentration of the Tergitol.

    AXPONA 2024 Ron Reporting

Unfortunate, although I guess I wouldn’t be too unhappy with a Grand Cru. ;) Mike seems likes he has real excitement behind getting Benz back into notice by the audio world.

I also liked the Amphion room. New to me as well. Those Stenheims were the 3SE.

    AXPONA 2024 Ron Reporting

I’m surprised no one has yet commented on Benz-Micro finally getting a new distributor for the U.S. - and making a show presence after so many years. I was very happy to meet with Mike Fajen of Sierra Sound. They had two tables each outfitted with two arms so showing four different Benz carts...

How long will a Tergitol mix "hold" in a UCM tank?

Meaning to say - I mixed up a batch of Tergitol a couple of months ago in anticipation of the upcoming purchase of a bunch of records. Time kind of delayed that, and between then and now I've only been able to clean about 12 records. Not enough to cause any weird growths to develop in the tank...

First of all, this guy is not Italian. Second, he can’t even pronounce the name correctly. But at least he recognizes that it’s good pie.

Anyone have a clue what’s on this record surface?

@Neil.Antin, the 99% IPA was only marginally effective, and I’m being charitable when I say that. So this morning I covered the offending area with a blob of Titebond Original and stuck a stick on to it. So tomorrow morning I just use the stick and hope the blob of glue comes up with it? No prep...
