Nice article in the Denver Post on Paramount Pressing

I have the AGD Duets driven directly by the Playback Designs MPS-8 variable volume control, no preamp, with YG Hailey 3 speakers. I'm comparing the Duets with some other amps, no definite conclusions yet, but I'm very happy with this set-up, and I plan to use the AGD amps in the summer since I...
Probably better not to engage with him - on Audiogon he posted non-stop about how SIM audio is better than anything else. Insufferable. Hope we do not get a repeat of that thread here.
I see about a 0.5 V drop when I turn on a baseboard electric heater that draws around 1 kW. Seems like it would have to be a huge power draw to reduce the voltage that much. I don't know what large appliance would turn on ever 30 minutes for just a few seconds. It might be interesting to...
A lot of Americans would agree with this.
It is difficult to generalize about work. If you have a creative job that you love, you can happily work 100 hours a week, at least for a time. If you have a soul crushing job that you hate, 40 hours a week can be intolerable - especially considering...
Steve Guttenberg (Youtube Audiophiliac) has the SIT-5 and is working on a review. He has a lot of experience with Pass and FirstWatt amps, so it will be interesting to hear his take.
The Marin County Fire chief has some good presentations on youtube about fire defensible space and fire resistant material, including shots of neighborhoods were the house burned even though the fire didn't burn the nearby trees and plants. It really emphasizes the importance of renovating...
@Kingrex - again, there is a very low fire risk from LiFePO4 batteries. I would be more worried about the inverter quality in the battery. The HOBOTECH youtube channel does a very comprehensive review of solar generators/batteries. At 12:40 minutes into this video he checks the inverter...
I have variable clouds today and I'm tracking my solar panel power generation and my Ting monitor for voltage and high frequency noise. There is a strong relationship between the variability in solar panel generation and Ting measured voltage. The voltage increase from 124 V to 125.5 V as the...
4000 fires from which type of batteries? Probably the more hazardous lithium ion batteries, not the LiFePO4 batteries that have very low fire risk and a much longer lifetime. DarTZeel uses LiFePO4 for their preamp.
Did you see any statistics on fires by battery type? I'm guessing they are from lithium ion batteries. I've read that LiFePo4 batteries are much safer and very low fire risk.
How are you measuring distortion in your house mains? The white paper that I linked to above has a lot more detail, including maps. I'm in a 0-5% THD area, but I'd like to get a more precise estimate. I should be able to get it from my Ting monitor, but they are not reporting THD numbers on...
From the article they say that "Whisker Labs will start alerting customers that have installed the company’s home sensor devices about bad harmonics starting this week, so that households inform local utilities about potential problems. " Data is collected with the Ting monitor that Whisker...
I've posted in other threads my weekly Ting summary of power quality. Ting is a monitor that my insurance company provides to monitor fire risk in my home electrical wiring. I'm exploring if it is useful for monitoring power quality for my stereo system. In addition to the weekly summary of...
Ron - I'm posting about fire defensible space and extreme weather, not politics. Facts. I've experienced multiple mandatory fire evacuations and pre-evacuations. I've lived through multiple 100 mph windstorms with fires within a few miles from my house. And when I write about making houses...
The Marshall fire in Superior/Lousiville CO on December 30, 2021 was a wake-up call about the risk of fire in urban/suburban areas. We were always worried about people living in the wildland interface with lots of trees, but when you have extreme drought and 100 mph winds, there is almost...
Looking at the FirstWatt webpage, the SIT-3 and SIT-4 do have the negative phase second harmonic, and I think they all do. In the SIT-3 manual Nelson says it is the signature that they preferred in the previous SIT amps. In his interview with Steve Guttenberg, Nelson said:
There is no mention...
Yes, you can replace the faceplate, the tweeter, the crossover and the binding posts in the full upgrade. I believe the Hailey 2 upgrade to version 3 is identical to new production, but you can call YG to verify.
Absolutely awful. I read good reviews and was looking forward to it. I cut my losses and stopped halfway through, but I regret watching the first half.
I really enjoyed the plot development initially, but like a lot of modern shows, it devolves into a video game like montage of the heroes walking through a dark building killing dozens of villains who leap out around corners shooting at them, but always miss. It is better if I skip over the...
I see it listed in Qobuz as the "Super Deluxe" edition, which I think is based on a 4 CD 80 track set released in 2022, but in the Qobuz download store I only see the "2012 Remastered & Expanded Edition" that has 14 tracks, and I don't see an option to purchase the Deluxe edition. Did your...
Here is a link to a study of THD using Ting monitors. Does anyone else have one of these in their home? I'm hoping to determine if I can use my Ting monitor to assess power quality in my home.
They also have a web page to check power quality from different providers.
It depends on your panels' microinverters and your battery system. My SunPower panels with Enphase microinverters output AC power, so there would be some power loss if I used these panels to charge a whole house battery backup system. But I believe you can find panels that will output DC...
I do not have a whole house battery system. Like Steve, I decided it was not worth the cost. I have a bunch of camping equipment including two small solar generators (EcoFlow and Growwatt) so when I do lose utility power, I can get by fine for several days. So my solar PV is feeding into the...
Steve - thanks for starting this thread. It has been five years since the last update on this thread - so there should be a much larger set of solar PV audiophile users by now?
My SunPower system with Enphase micro-inverters was installed two years ago on a detached garage with a metal roof...
