If I were buying a turntable of this caliber, I would be buying the designer’s design philosophy, as well as his skills and ears in tuning the sound of the final products! So, if the designer highly recommend a particular arm, I trust there must be certain synergy between the two products, and...
I am very interested in turntables with airbearings. While I am no engineer, as far as I understand there are two major types of airbearing used in turntables. The first one is what I called half or partial airbearing, with which the platter floats on a cushion of air in the vertical plane, but...
Hi Lief, have your Rowland Complement been retipped? I also have one, which probably needs to be retipped soon. I am not sure whether Ikeda would still do the retip, or if other third parties could retip this special cartridge?
Thanks
Yes, better to have a stylus guard like this! A local guy made a batch of this stylus guard and sold them for $40 each. Expensive for what it is but does help to prevent expensive retips. I think it is easy to made if you know someone with a 3D printer.
No, I didn’t change the loading.
I understand the impedance matching could change the sound, but is halving the impedance a sure advantage? I am not good at this, so what impedance is the cartridge seeing when you connect the secondary in parallel?
Just for your reference, I have tested a Lundahl transformer, which could be wired for either 1:5 or 1:10, with my EMT P6.0. In my system, I preferred the 1:10 setting. You may want to test the 1:8 setting to see if it works for you!
Best
Yes, that’s why I said assuming the lowest VTA setting was 180g! If the lightest LP you will play is 120g, then set the height ring at 120g, and measure the height difference between the height ring and arm base at 130g, 180g, 200g etc. While still more complicated than with the 4Point, should...
Hi jfrech, I have think of an easier way for you to consider. On the 4Point, you have what Kuzma called the “height ring”, which locks up at the arm pillar to hold up the arm when the screw at the arm base is released. The Safir also comes with this ring, but here it just acts as a spacer, and...
Hi mtemur, not meant to argue, just interested to know what current model cartridges do you consider neutral? I’ll try to audition them to see if I like them even more :)
Thanks
Interesting, I have never heard anyone among my audio group calling the EMTs thin and bright! To my ears, many other cartridges, including the Etsuro Gold and AT 2022 mentioned above, sound brighter than the EMT.
Maybe our perceptions or systems are just different! That’s why there are so many...
My main set up included the Safir on Rockport Capella II TT, Aesthetix Io Eclipse and Callisto Eclipse phono and linestage, 2 sets of Pass Labs X350.5 amps Biamping the Apogee speakers. I also have other TTs and arms setup in the system.
For cartridge, yes, I am very pleased with the EMT P6.0...
Yes, my friend is using the MC2022 with the Safir. To my ears, the combo also tilted slightly to the bright side, but less so than with the Etsuro Gold.
Hi mtemur, thanks for the reply! I have no experience with the Kondo’s silk string, no knot is certainly great, is it custom made? Any idea where I can get some to try?
Thanks
Sorry, I really have no idea, as it was a dealer’s demo session, but it was fed into an EMT JPA66 preamp with phono, so it must have gone through the internal SUT instead of an active MC gain stage.
@PeterA , @christensenleif@msn.com , Hi Peter, Lief, I also prefer inelastic belt / string, and using a Mylar belt on my Rockport Sirius II.
However, I have always had this question on the back on my mind regarding the Micro Seiki or similar strings. Since you have to tie a knot with these...
I have also auditioned the Safir, Etsuro Gold combo at the dealer’s showroom, and it was not my cup of tea, a bit too bright to my ears. To be fair, the cartridge was brand new, so not run in yet! Anyway, at the time, I and my friends all preferred the EMT VM over the Etsuro Gold on the Safir!
I am no engineer, so can’t talk about the technical advantages and disadvantages of having variable torque. However, as far as I understand, you can change the torque of an AC motor by simply changing the driving AC voltage.
I have asked my engineer friend to build me a dual phase AC motor...
If I remember correctly, the Terminator needs only less than 2 psi of air pressure. You may want to check out the Micro Seiki compressors, which are quiet enough to be placed right under the turntable. They may be powerful enough for the Terminator
Hi Peter, beautiful turntable! I have a question about its operation. I see that the motor pulley has two levels, which I assume are for 33.3 and 45 rpm respectively, so you switch speed by physically moving the string from one level to the other. If positive, is the string you are using...
