Symmetry and Non symmetry in listening environments
Over the years I have overseen the design and construction of a number of listening rooms; including six that had build-outs of over 100,000. These had ceiling and wall curvatures to break up modes and focus acoustical energies. I have also...
I guess, referencing Jack's post about being an "early adopter", there would be a big difference between the manufacturer, the dealer and the end-user.
The end-user has to look at things as to whether a new product / new technology represents a very real improvement in performance, and whether...
Regarding Post 73:
You might try removing the diffusers on the ceiling and try something else. In many cases, the reflection off of the ceiling above and in front of the speakers may be a major culprit. Assuming your speakers emulate a point source, reflections off of the walls will be that...
We first used the expanded urethane with mineral fill in a project in Kentucky. It worked wonders for the foot fall problem, as well as noise transmission issues. It may well be that closed cell foam would work better.
Later on, we started putting on layers of blown in celluose fiber over the...
One way to address the noise coming through your ceiling is to get a urethane foam contractor to come in and spray in foam in the joist areas. I have done this a number of times with very good results. I have found that the most important area is that along the edge where the under-flooring...
On the cylinders, we used 1/4" F-13.
In other applications we have used F-13 up to 1" thick - black holes for absorbing reflections in a fairly linear fashion down to below 300 Hz.
F-13 is a medium density 100% pressed wool felt. You can get much higher - up to F-60 density, which is...
Alternate View of Room Acoustic Issues
Over the years, I have designed a number of rooms for several clients. At one time, I was building rooms prefab in 10' sections and shipping them complete, and then flying out to oversee final construction. I have done six "signature" rooms with ceilings...
Duane, you are grovelling too much. In all fairness, I should mention a couple of things.
Duane has represented products that I have designed and manufactured myself, or in collaboration with others, for probably over 20 years; starting with Essence (he sold at least 6 pairs of Amethyst 10...
"Military Secrets"
Well, one more post, and I have to get back to work.
This addresses the “50% military secret??!” post earlier in this thread.
Very early on (1973 – I was 18) in my audio career (?) - when I was designing my first Essence speaker (the 8a), I had a lot of help from Bob...
I have never said that any of my products have 50% military secrets, nor do I recall ever claiming that they contain any military secrets at all. But the products have had the benefit of a fair amount of military and AeroSpace input. I go into some of the ways I have able to obtain special...
Hi Daniel,
The power supplies in all Essence amps were very large, even by todays' standards. Most of the stereo amps would play at full level for about 40 seconds. In the larger mono blocks, it was close to two minutes.
I'd have to go back to my documentation on the Gen III mono blocks...
This forum has gone in a lot of different directions, and I look forward to addressing a few posts.
Since I know this amplifier inside-out, I can give you a fairly accurate description of the concepts, materials and technology that led to its' development.
First, let me address the post...
My name is Dale Pitcher. I was the director of engineering for Essence when the amplifier that started this thread was developed and marketed. The Generation III amplifiers were the most advanced amplifiers built by Essence. Only eight were built - basically because they were too complicated...
