Perhaps.
On the other hand, Reno cleared out most or all of their used Pass gear before shutting down. I don’t see how Suncoast (or anyone else) can start selling used Pass gear until they first build up an inventory of new Pass gear and then start taking trade-ins (which have to be shipped...
I bought my Pass Gear from Mark at Reno HiFi, and as it turns out Mike at Suncoast is my local dealer… everything else I have I bought from him. Pass Labs couldn’t have made a better choice… IMHO.
I'm not sure if it's been mentioned, but most audiophile fuses are apparently tested using a European method (CE) which results in a somewhat lowered fuse rating than the American (UL) method. I've been advised by my pre-amp manufacturer to use an audiophile fuse 1 size (10 - 15% or so) larger...
I wouldn't have thought so, but the XS 300s are significantly better than the XS 150s - the difference is not subtle. This is not meant as a knock to the XS 150s, which sound amazing... right up until you hear the 300s.
Harmonically, they sound very much the same. I'd say the major differences...
I have 2 of these Revelation Audio CryoSilver™ Reference DualConduit™ DB-25 umbilical power cables in the 1 meter lengths. List price for these is $799 for the .75 meter and $949 for the 1.0 meter. The .75 meter is okay if you have the preamp chassis stacked one on the other but if they're even...
Okay then. Of course, even though they're already broken in they'll need a few days to "acclimate" - I only powered them up for the first time this afternoon. I'll write up my impressions next week.
But you were so quick to tell me to change my browser...
vB5 was released how long ago and it's still... unstable is as good a word as any. Many believe it will never be a viable platform for a large forum. vB4 is for the most part unsupported and there is no vB6 in development, so in reality...
LOL - I should change my browser because you're using forum software that is no longer maintained? Perhaps upgrading to the current version of vBulletin or converting to a better forum software product?
I've noticed it as well - seems to happen only when replying with a quote... replies without quotes are not showing this behavior. I'm using the Chrome browser on Windows 10 BTW.
LOL - that very pair of XS 300s is sitting on a pallet in my garage waiting to be swapped in for my outgoing XS 150s. The part that failed has been upgraded in both amps and Pass has given me a new 3 year warranty on them. From my discussions with them it seems they've been using the same part...
Do you have a reference for that? I know they use similar drivers but Magico uses different part numbers for them:
M Project Midrange: MCG1005
S7 Midrange: MCG8005
S5 MKII Midrange: M390G
Out of curiosity Peter - was the comparison between the XA160.5s and XA160.8s driving the M-Pros in Ian's system done before or after the electrical issues that were limiting current to the amps were worked out?
Yeah - at just about one month in one of the amps malfunctioned. Pass Labs and Mark at Reno HiFi were really good about it -- sent out a replacement pair immediately.
I'm breaking in my second pair of XA160.8s. The bass is a bit out of whack during the break-in but it calms down nicely after a couple of hundred hours. At that point they are not bass shy by any means but it''s not overly exaggerated either IMO. Of course, that's with my sealed box Magicos...
What speakers were in the system you heard the Point 8s in? Were they well out from the front and side walls? In my system the bass was somewhat muddy until I pulled the speakers well out into the room.
Yeah, especially with revealing speakers (like my Magico S5s). In addition to what you mentioned, a really good rack (OK - you did say isolation) and room treatments need to be part of the overall plan.
Honestly - unless I had a lot of coin burning a hole in my pocket I'd be completely satisfied with the XA.8/XP-30 combination and using any leftover funds for bringing the rest of your gear up to their level. This gear, especially with high resolution (i.e. unforgiving) speakers will really call...
Well yeah they use more electricity - they are capable of *much* higher current output. In the case of the XA60.5 vs XA60.8, it's 20 amps vs 30 amps max output. That's huge. And that's how the Point 8s sound - huge!
FWIW, my XA160.8s don't seem to run any hotter than my XA 160.5s. :)
Yeah, just a heads up - listen to the Point 8s before making any decisions. As much as I loved my XA160.5s, my XA160.8s are much better in virtually every way. I was quite surprised at the improvement TBH - I expected it to be subtle... but it ain't.
I'm expecting my pair of XA160.8s late next week. My turn to put them through their paces. :D
My XP-30 and S5s are very excited... My XA160.5s not so much. :(
I'm intrigued by this. I'm currently breaking in a pair of Magico S5s (maybe 1000 hours so far) and I'm very happy with the sound of jazz, male and female vocals, and small scale classical music but less so large scale classical and even less so with rock music. I haven't been able to put my...
I don't think I'm quite clear on the use of the words "warm" and "dark" in the context of this thread.
When I use the word warm I'm talking about a rich, full sound that I associate with tube gear and analog front ends mostly, but to a lesser extent with Class A amplifiers. In the case of the...
