Is that really what caused the "demise" of the SoCal audio shows?
After the founder of The Home Entertainment Show, Richard Beers, died in 2016, the remaining team that assisted in the organization of T.H.E. Show, despite attempts by the LA/OC Audio Society to communicate with them (to assist...
Finally there is some hope for a good audio show in Los Angeles!
I hate to talk badly about T.H.E Show, but I am getting more than a bit disappointed with these 30 room shows. And these small shows started well before covid. And other shows around the country have had no problems recovering...
That's the great thing about the Larsen's I mentioned above.
They are extremely predictable when placed against the wall. They were specifically designed to be against the wall.
You might also want to check into Larsen speakers.
Also designed to be right against the wall, and they have several different models, for different sized rooms.
Every time I've heard them at an audio show, I have been very impressed. They produce a legitimate soundstage and image, despite...
Let me also add, that from, say, 20 rows back, a 50 foot wide orchestra is not perceived as 50 feet wide. So, the need to reproduce a 50 foot wide orchestra, is not even necessary.
A more realistic goal, is to transport the listener to the original performance, not transport the musicians to one's room.
I wouldn't even want to transport musicians to my room, even a soloist.
I would rather imagine myself at Disney Hall, then to imagine the LA Phil in my room.
While I fully appreciate my headphone rig (Audeze and headphone amp), it will never replace my speakers.
Listening to speakers is a much more visceral experience, much closer to a live musical event, than headphones.
Headphones do not: reproduce the physical impact of music interacting with...
The problem is, that human perceptions and our senses are pretty easy to fool. The number of experiments is way too long to even begin to even begin to list.
Not to mention our confirmation biases, our faulty memories, misinterpretation of sensory input, etc.
Thank you for this post.
I was going to say something similar, but you said it better than I could have.
First of all, much of the music that the avant- garde critics consider ugly, I don't find ugly. It's just that the beauty is found deeper in the music and it takes a bit of work to...
No, the stock markets are NOT reacting to the media.
They are reacting to the 2nd largest economy in the world, all but shutting down manufacturing. Lower manufacturing in China, means: lack of parts for the auto industry around the world, lack of electronic parts for high tech industry, lack...
Yeah, that happened for the great influenza pandemic of 1919. Everyone was elated over the low new cases in the summer.
Do you know what happened in the fall after the 'summer disinfectant'? The strain became even more virulent. 650,000 dead in October alone.
This problem (majority Boomers in the hobby) seems to be somewhat specific to the USA.
Whenever I watch videos of audiophile shows in Europe and Asia, there seems to be a lot more people walking around substantially younger than Boomes.
Also, there are quite a few audiophile YouTube providers...
YES!
How can we not mention John Iverson!?
I used to work at a high end shop in the LA area (San Fernando Valley, specifically), and we carried Electro Kinetics. What an incredible amp the Eagle 7A was.
He used to come in the store pretty frequently, and he always had some, ah...let me...
I had a pair of Quads I was driving with the mythical Yamaha B2 (with the now, unobtainium V-FETs).
That was an incredible match.
The speakers showed off the best attributes of the amp, and the amp showed off the best attributes of speakers.
I wish I still owned both
I like that they are using an isobaric design for the woofers. You don't see that too much anymore.
Besides lowering the box size for the same bass output, the trapped air between the woofers acts to stiffen the cone. And it also tends to cancel out nonlinearities in the drivers.
I can't speak...
I've never heard that distinction before.
Stereo listening, whether headphones of speakers, has always been 2 channel, as far as what I've always heard. And I post on quite a few forums, belong to the largest audiophile society in the world, attend several audio shows per year, visit brick and...
I am going to have to disagree with the overall thesis of the OP.
The 'savior' of the audiophile business will, in my opinion, be the entry level for all those who grew up listening to cheap earbuds on their phones.
Great quality products from companies like: Schitt, ELAC, Denon (they have a...
Any system that I would consider 'good', would be able to play rock, classical and jazz equally well. Or close to it. I listen to almost equal amounts of jazz, classical and rock.
But then, the type of rock I listen to, tends to fall into one of the various prog subgenres, and most of these...
Yes, when I posted the OP, I was not happy using the term 'atonal', but it seems like the best term to use for the types of music I am referring to. At least, the vast majority of classical music fans understand what types of music are being referred to.
I actually have slipped into a limbic...
I believe the only examples of pre 20th century, are some of Schoenberg's and Webern's earliest works.
Most of the rest on the list are living composers.
Some examples:
Elliott Carter
Bruno Maderna
Thomas Ades
Magnus Lindberg
Peter Maxwell Davies
Joan Tower
Thea Musgrave
Harrison Birtwistle
Augusta Read Thomas
Penderecki
Ligeti
Schoenberg
Berg
Webern
Andrew Norman
Charles Wuorinen
And many others.
Yeah...
Even when I was still listening to a...
I have recently come to the conclusion, that I am no longer enjoying much classical music that is tonal.
As of late, whenever I put on a recording of tonal, common practice, classical music from any of the major composers, I almost always end it before it is finished, as I lose interest. I...
