I run a Citroën DS21 from 1968, and the successor to this from 1970, the SM, is classed by many motoring journalists as a high water mark in motoring technology. Hydraulics controlling suspension, steering, brakes, gearbox; 2 turns of steering wheel lock to lock; self centering steering; variable power against speed re steering; one of the most streamlined cars of it's day, being one of the first to be designed in the wind tunnel, a true original aesthetic w headlights that turn w the steering; differential brakes front and rear; exotic Maserati engine.

Nothing drove like this car at the time, indeed even today, it remains other worldly.

My point I guess is that this was true cutting edge in so many ways, but remained a niche product.

A true expression of the designer's art. As is the AF0.

Where is FrantzM when we need him?

I posed a question a few years ago if fancy casework (billet aluminum etc) for amps had any practical effect on sound and not a single person answered. Dan Dagostino admitted he designed form over function first in this latest iteration. As such, a lot of the final price of equipment these days is probably not justified and more in context with a regular luxury item.

Also point to the used market - very high MSRP gear usually has the worst resale.

"Envy is a tendency to perceive with displeasure the good of others, although it in no way detracts from one's own;...it is however only an indirect, malevolent frame of mind, namely a disinclination to see our own good overshadowed by the good of others, because we take its measure not from its intrinsic worth, but by comparison with the good of others and then go on to symbolize that evaluation"

No envy from this direction. I salute anyone owning AF0 or any other bleeding edge product. But have zero desire to own one myself.

I showed my wife this thread. She read page one to three..gave me a smirk..and said "Look who is talking." That about sum it all.

She is right no one in high end hobby has the right to repulse what is expensive.

Enjoy our hobby at our own comfortable level and do socciety good through sharing, charity and even small help to those who are less fortunate. But dont repulse those who do their living with the top end hierarchy. If someone were to get ripped off, let it be those top 1%. It is not going to make their life any hardship.

Kindest regards,
Tang

. . . maybe too much resolution in the new one is too uncompromising for some.

. . . me.

This is pointless and frivolous speculation, especially in view of the fact that Michael Fremer reported the opposite.

I agree, poverty is no good for the planet, we need diversification and balance.
We need a better system where the distance between the very rich and very poor is much narrower.

How do we do that?

This is politics, Bob. Please do not discuss politics on this forum.

Well, if they induced envy, then all the money was worth it! Shadenfreude!

Envy on, audio serfs! Suffer! You'll never get your hands on my wheelbarrow full of Koetsus.

Don’t you mean zero desire to pay for one?

I don't know about that... put a big amp on those 118 dB efficient BMS coax drivers and it might kill you. ;)

There are worse ways to go LOL

No Ron, no desire to own. Zero desire to pay, and I can't anyhow. But even if I could, no.

At what point does politics merge with a very relevant topic of affordability in audio gear (and its impacts on those desiring maximum performance for the money spent) and access to "What's Best"? In my mind, there is a clear correlation to pricing and ownership.

There is no point at which politics merges with the affordability of audio gear.

I do not believe you would not be happy if an AF0 magically appeared in your listening room for free, completely set-up and ready to play.

I have always thought it was the system and price is secondary. These items that push the limits in performance and cost will always be for a select few.
Bottom line it’s about the quality of reproduction....
I agree with Paul McGowan....
