Favorite Rolex?

I think with most modern Rolexes at +/-2.0 seconds, the timekeeping is not much of an issue. One can always get better time with a spring drive movement but so far Grand Seiko is not keeping up with Rolex in resale value.

That said, I would love to have a Grand Seiko because I love the finishing of them and I do think they are a bargain for quality.

There are plenty of GS that hold their value well. For all the hype about the SS sports watch grey market people forget that one can buy new DJs and Calatravas at discounts (and big ones on Cellini). I love my OP39 and “Spring” equally but the GS is far better finished.

Rolex and PP are more about speculation than horology these days (and Rolex makes 200,000 watches less than they used to). Rather unfortunate.

I agree with much of this and one can argue there is a bit of a bubble around Rolex pricing at the moment...but generally speaking I do think resale is stronger on Rolex than GS. However, if Kevin O'Leary is correct then the GS represents a true bargain.

I agree on the Grand Seiko have extraordinary finishing. And best of all, you can walk into a store and purchase them.

I'm a bit of a fan of Rolex but it is very depressing to only see empty display cases these days. And the Watches and Wonders announcement was pretty boring this year.

Still, I am probably looking at a 36mm DJ in white gold soon even after being tempted by a Grand Seiko Snowflakes and Four Seasons watches. I would love to have a dress watch but I need something more durable as I am rough on my watches.

I was routing around some old papers yesterday and stumbled across an invoice from 2002 for a Rolex GMT, list price was £2,350. There wasn't any waiting list, grey market premia and I even got a small discount from that price.

Today's used market value for the exact same watch is @£10k. I can think of several other items, watches and cars, which I have bought and sold for what is now a fraction of their present day value...

I wear a $700.00 Citizen Eco Drive that keeps perfect time as it syncs off the atomic clock. It does not have a battery, it charges a capacitor via sunlight, thus the Eco.

I had the fortunate priviledge of wearing the Paul Newman watch for a couple minutes a few days before it sold at auction for a silly amount of coin. We had a watch event at our work and that was the center piece of the event. Those watches were under armed gaurds for the day and a half they were there.

Honestly I love watches, more specifically pocket watches, but I have never seen a Rolex that knocked me to my knees with awesomeness.

Now that's more like it...a simple watch; elegant, nice blue night satin background.

* I'm going to mention this though; the right "crankshaft" ... it always hurt my skin as some activities, movements, ... position it against my wrist with some deep pressure. Even driving a sportscar that requires dexterity in handling the steering wheel.

That's only my personal opinion. But it's s nice watch, better looking than the "cockpit" types.
Gregg, just curious; do you dive two miles plus deep occasionally?

And therein lies the problem of Rolex watches- they keep terrible time!. Traded my Rolex in for a bass guitar decades ago and never looked back. An iphone keeps better time than any Rolex!

I always heard that also brakes often and needs to be worn or auto winding. any pics of winders ?

A rare and well-preserved Rolex is an investment. An iPhone is out of date and worth less after just 1 year.

Back to the future….I have been mulling over getting a vintage day date / president and stumbled across this re-edition in Lisbon. My wrist size is still the same as it was @35 years ago however our tastes / perceptions of preferred watch size have changed somewhat and its 36mm now appears rather small. Still appreciably larger than my Cartier Tank though, which looks like a postage stamp…

An interesting read on Fratello, not least of all the comments. Last weekend, the Rolex store in Harrods had only gold / diamond / women’s pieces and fwiw the Audermars store was almost totally empty apart from some cufflinks!

Post #175 resonates with me. I also still have the same wrist size. But the watches I bought in the 1990s are too small for my eyes to read unless they are of a white simple uncluttered dial. These days, 42 mm watches seem to fit my eyes and wrist the best. I have also discovered the practicality of washable straps made of garter or cotton.

Here’s a non-Rolex post which has some linkage to Rolex. Zenith have just released a sports chrono which looks rather like a Rolex Daytona. The subtle irony here being Zenith used to supply movements to Rolex for earlier Daytona production runs.
