Videos of Acoustically-Coupled Audio Recordings

It's a sound I would like to be getting from my system. The track is a good one as it highlights what I'm missing.

Really? How is the sound so good in your view, and what are you missing?

Based on the video, I perceive the appeal of these speakers that seem to offer a pleasant sound with good transparency and tonal accuracy (albeit limited low end). But videos don't tell it all, and there may be some aspects that are lacking, that only a listening session can reveal.

Coming back to the Rumours album, here is a SACD rip that sounds better than the versions on streaming, just to emphasize the need to choose high quality recordings when assessing systems:

Listening to this on YouTube with my DAC and headphones I don't really hear a significant difference.

Any track can be used to assess a system, and if you have doubts about some aspects of the sound you can always listen to the same track on another system to see if those aspects change. We should not "overthink" this.

Or your DAC is not allowing the difference to come through. So you prefer Qobuz versions to this YouTube version?

It would be good to hear @Ron Resnick Qobuz playback of Oh Daddy video...
When I reclock both cd and Qobuz there is little discernable difference .if you’re not reclocking your digital streams then you are missing potential…I don’t care how good your streamer or cd transport is.

I suspect the 2011 SACD is superior to both though. Really need to get around to getting a SACD player.

In the meantime...

Joe Newman's quintet live at Count Basie's in 1961. The suspension of disbelief is working for me - I must be easy to please. The imperfections of the system don't get in my way. These small club recordings, where you can hear the atmosphere behind the musicians, are fun.

Live recording. I recently added a Velodyne SPL-800 II powered sub-w in my audio system and found the best setting for it.
Original music.

Jay at Jay’s Audio Lab has been using this song to showcase how good his new system and room sound:

I thought that it would be fun for us to post some videos of our systems playing the same song so that we can compare and contrast. Here are videos of two of my systems:

Post videos of your systems playing this song so that we can hear a glimpse of each others’s system’s sound quality. This is meant to be fun as after all, it is what it is.

This is another good example of the power of video recordings. Jay's system has a distinct sound signature. It homogenizes music - everything sounds the same. The song has an airy, delicate, feel. Jay's system fails to render that, it sounds dull (notes are not "sharp", but "rounded off").

Some people may enjoy Jay's version and be impressed by some other aspects of the sound.

Your video captures the song's "sound" much better.

These comments are made after listening to the track on Qobuz with my headphones, which I believe are fairly neutral and detailed.

P.S. I prefer your version without the remastering! The remastering seems to add some form of echo on the notes. Hard to explain.

No, I really do not need an SACD player. I have yet to hear DSD sound convincing.

What is lacking, in your view?

(I don't have an SACD player myself, because the format was always going to be a niche product.)

I'll play along...

Recorded with my Google Pixel phone (the high notes on piano have noticeable distortion as a result). I find my speakers need 15-30 minutes to settle in each time I play them - this is the first track I played this morning, but perhaps the difference would not be so noticeable.

To me, Jay’s video sounds flat, two-dimensional and devoid of musicality.

My DHT-SET system on this video sounds really great. This particular pairing of the Thomas Mayer 10Y Silver DHT line stage preamplifier and Thomas Mayer 801A drives 45 amplifier with my Digital Audio Denmark AX24 pure DSD DAC, at DSD128, really delivers the goods in terms of musicality and resolution.

My WAAR with the remastering process really sounds exceptional. The piano and drums sound phenomenal. What you hear as “something like echo” is the dimensionality of the Remastering process; this feature can be adjusted to taste as well with my Remastering process. I like the sound. On this song the current Remastering process settings are better suited for the music than the vocals, as she “drags” her voice. In the room it sounds stellar.

These videos are representative of the system’ general sound signatures.
