The Greatest Rachmaninoff 3rd of all time?

This sound curiously dim, not to mention bass-shy? Greetings from Switzerland, David.

The Greatest Rachmaninoff 3rd of all time?

The best sounding digital, by the way and IMHO, is the DSD256 flat transfer from Stereo Sound. Greetings from Switzerland, David.

    Solti Ring 2022 remaster 24/192

Please note I edited my post above! Unfortunately I was late to the party and couldn't secure a copy of the Stereo Sound SACDs, but yes, all the others I have are single layer (no Hybrids, instead packaged along with a redbook CD of the same material - some may say unnecessary, but I love the...

    Solti Ring 2022 remaster 24/192

Comparing Stereo Sound SACD to the 24/192 PCM of the 2022 Remastered version on Qobuz, both via storage NAS, i.e. identical playback chain (not streaming the one and playing back the other using a transport, but what I feel is as fair a comparison as possible), I agree the Stereo Sound SACD...

Record Label Honesty In the Download Era

Of course, but the only question that is relevant here is this: is it or is it not fraudulent labeling to sell the exact same compression level digital file in different file format containers at different price levels? In Switzerland at least, a well-known supermarket chain had to retract...

    Most vinyl-sounding DAC?

The only time I ever heard a direct comparison between DAC chip sets in the same unit was with the Counterpoint DA-10 - it was fascinating, but of course one still came away wondering if the topology was equally suited to each so-called "DAC card". Greetings from Switzerland, David.

They did until the word got out! ;) Greetings from Switzerland, David.

    Most vinyl-sounding DAC?

True, but some people around here (not me) never listen to high-resolution digital, so if redbook CD and DAT were all one is playing, it’s still a pretty fine DAC. Greetings from Switzerland, David.

    Most vinyl-sounding DAC?

Right, three. Anyways, fond memories apart from the inability to (easily) use some favorite power cords. Greetings from Switzerland, David.

    Most vinyl-sounding DAC?

I remember that one well, unfortunately way beyond my financial means as a student back then! Loved that unit, but needs a custom shelf to be able to plug in the two (!) power cords (unless using stock). Greetings from Switzerland, David.

    Most vinyl-sounding DAC?

Interesting. Needless to say, there are no "best" settings, those are system-dependent. But there are ones (the factory settings, and therein lies the irony…) that aren't meant for music playback. Greetings from Switzerland, David.

    Most vinyl-sounding DAC?

Nice, had a couple of DACs using those back in the era (one with swappable DAC board, that was quite interesting, the other with a tube output stage, either way, the UltraAnalog had a slightly thick and mellow sound that was nonetheless preferable to mostly anything else available at the time)...

    Most vinyl-sounding DAC?

That's certainly quicker than to go through all the choices between Vivaldi Apex DAC and Upsampler units combined! ;) Greetings from Switzerland, David.

    Most vinyl-sounding DAC?

There’s always room to upgrade, but the system was by no means bad (nor, in fact, a studio system), on the contrary. I was younger back then, and it was so tough a sizable wager would have been out of the question. Besides, the nerds from the manufacturer were able to tell the difference - but...
