quick question on this SUT...
my understanding is that the ATH-2 has two gain settings (23 and 29 dB) with "fixed" input impedances (40 and 2 ohms, respectively) -- in other words, there is no possibility of fine-tuning the impedance via RCA plugs with resistors or other means. is my...
I am hoping to get any thoughts, impressions, etc. from the community here on the McIntosh C22 MK V pre-amp -- especially regarding sonics of the C22 which I guess would include perceptions on the McIntosh "house sound".
This pre-amp certainly checks all the major boxes for me: tubed output...
Thank you Thomas. Replacing the stock EH 5U4GB with a NOS RCA 5U4GB made a significant, positive SQ impact. So, now I think I will give the Elrog 5U4G a try.
I see you are using an Elrog 5U4G rectifier in your ATM 300R. What has been you experience with this tube?
Of particular interest is that Air Tight specifies a 5U4GB which adds a slow-start mechanism and as I understand has different electrical specs versus the 5U4G. It was my understanding...
I now have committed to the ATM-300R and looking at three more pre-amps to consider for the list of candidates:
1. Doshi Line Preamplifier v3.0
2. VAC Renaissance Mk V
3. Mastersound Spettro
Would love to hear from anyone with experience with these three as well as the others above...
Thanks -- Upon an initial investigation the TVC / AVC type pre-amps are looking like a really nice option.
In terms of tubed pre-amps, a draft list includes:
Thomas Mayer
Audio-Antiquary
Shindo ^
^ I am really, really curious how the Shindo pre-amps might sound with Air Tight. Might be like...
Thanks for the suggestion. While I like what tubes bring to the table, the EMIA is a very interesting idea, particularly if used with a tubed DAC and/or phono-pre. Definitely something to investigate and consider further.
I am close to acquiring an Air Tight ATM-300R power amp. Hence, I wanted to get input and opinions on suitable pre-amps as that will be my next system upgrade. Obviously, an Air Tight pre-amp would be a logical choice but I wanted to consider other possibilities as well...
Which pre-amps are...
for jazz listening i am not at 70% and, therefore, did not vote in the poll.
however, as a data point: i listen with non-compression loaded horns and my opinion is that of all the instruments most commonly used in jazz, it is the horns -- saxophone, trumpet -- where the speakers really shine...
thanks so much for this information!!
i have heard one owner mention that his atm-300, probably the first version, was somewhat noisy. all others have said it was dead quiet.
just, curious what your experience with the 300 anniversary is in this regard?
do you use the attenuators on the 300...
to throw another contender into the mix, how would Thomas Mayer 300B stereo amps compare to those already listed and discussed above?
in particular, i would be keen to hear any thoughts on the Air Tight ATM-300R w/ the ATC-5 preamp in comparison to a Thomas Mayer 300B stereo amp w/ the 10Y preamp?
