    Soundsmith Sussurro MkII re-evaluated

A year and a half later after I first tried it, I have to say I am re-assessing the Sussurro. I switched to using a VAS MC One SUT, which is decidedly better than the MC input of the Quad 24p, but even then the Sussurro didn't get a permanent place. But since I added two more tonearms using the...

    What's Spinning Tonight?

Currently the UK 1970 original pressing of Fotheringay. Each time I play it I wonder if The Banks of The Nile may not have been Sandy's finest song.

London Decca Jubilee revisited - combination with SME 3012R ?

@UEM I had not seen this thread before, so I'm glad you updated it. Like you, I started with a Jubilee, and liked it so much I bought a Reference two weeks later. That was in 2011, and I still regard it as my best cartridge. I managed to get it serviced by John Wright just before he retired, so...

The cars you have loved, or are in love with. Tell us your car history and what each one taught you

It will be Miata season again soon. For those in the know, I have a "cursed plug" to install and some "unicorn tears" as well. Hoping for a smooth and enjoyable top-down summer, my 33rd with her.

    SME 12A Twin Turntable

Here's the cheapskate solution. I've been happily using Acoustand pods but I'm aware of their limitations. I spent some time thinking about the tonearm panel and how I might attach it to the subframe, and made a plan. I could see that a 29.4mm hole would fit over the pillar, and that a threaded...

    London Decca Reference to Return

@bonzo75 "broke"? How so? I've had mine since 2011, and apart from expected servicing it has not broken once. And I'm quite certain I'm not an expert at setting up a cartridge but I don't suffer any mis-tracking. Maybe your friend's tonearm wasn't suited to it? Chris

    London Decca Reference to Return

I have not heard the ART-1000, but I do have a Reference and an LP-S. The Benz, when I first had it, I thought might have had the edge over the Decca, but eventually I realised I was being beguiled by the warm and friendly Benz house sound. I keep the Benz mounted and use it regularly, but...

Is this 'GOLD CD' of Bach Goldberg Variations (Glenn Gould 1981) any better?

I prefer the 1981 recording to the 1955, which makes me unusual. I don't even mind the humming on the Sony CD, the trick is to hum yourself and enjoy it!

Put my Grado Statement 3 back in for the day (in place of the MP-500), and listening happily to the founders of Pentangle, before Pentangle:

    Cable between SUT and phonostage

I went out and found some one foot long interconnects to go between SUT, phono stage and pre-amp, rather than 3ft/1m ones. It really does make a difference, of the order of changing from one cartridge to another.

Since when has McIntosh been considered Hi-End?

Defensive, eh? And forty years ago there was definitely a high end. Remember, if you can, that was the era when cheap Japanese music centres were going out of fashion, to be replaced by faux-separates. If you wanted cheap and good, it was NAD in Europe, but if you wanted high end, it was Linn...

    Viv Lab Owners

I thought that claim a bit hyperbolic, but it is true that the thin edges of the diamond will ride in the groove twisted away from the intended position in a headshell with an offset.

    Viv Lab Owners

I expect most forums have debated this arm and the theory underpinning its design. There was particularly lively one at Audiogon. It always seems to break down into those that own one and love it (even overcoming their disapproval of the rather lightweight pod it sits upon, which makes me...

    The [coffee snobs'] espresso thread

I can't compete with the fancy machines, but I have worn out two Saeco Vienna superautomatics over the years and now use the Philips version. I'm fond of odd machines, and sometimes use a napolitana/cuccumella, a Cona or a moka pot (especially good for breakfast coffee diluted with hot milk). I...

Don't accept what people will say as fact

Back when I could only imagine the joy of owning Quad ESLs, it was taken for granted that the other price you paid for owning them was little bass. There used to be ads in the back of Gramophone for an add-on subwoofer that made a stand for 63s to rest on, and it was felt to be OK. That...
