Hi all i have just made some michell gyro /orbe replacement pylons out of Delrin , they work very well , i have managed to get rid of the wow when the springs where removed and replaced with this tweak , also use 3 little rubber pads on top of the small shaft that goes into the suspension adjuster on the spilt suspension this has stopped the microphone effect off the feet ,

When I owned the Orbe during 2001-2012 period, I went thru the Gerd Pedersen upgrade kit, replacing to bouncy sprung suspension pillars w O-rings, and filling the plinth and armboard w inert sand-like material. In conjunction with a TTW periphery ring, it transformed the sound from musical but imprecise and bloated, to much tighter yet losing no musicality.

I have no idea if it's still available, but you can email Gert at

gerts kit is too expensive, this does the same but no need to drill .add plastic padding , these work with out all that , so you can always take them out , gerts you cannot as he has drilled and tapped the chassis, he needs the string to stop the chassis from rotation , these do not

here is some one else i made them for as a hobby and not a commercial venture
That can take a while with the two cartridges that I use as one has a Shibata stylus, the other a Replicant both of which take a lot of care to align properly.

Once I had completed the suspension installation and replaced the arms and platter I did quick check just to see that all was in working order. By now it was well into the evening so I had a meal to prepare etc. so left the turntable. When I returned later I found that the suspension had “ settled” by a tiny amount ( we are probably talking seconds of arc here as the bubble level still had the bubble within the marked target area for a level setting but indicated a slight bias towards one side). I corrected this with the adjusters which , with the load of the arms and platter, were stiffer to turn than without it ( no surprise). I had a couple of similar tiny adjustments to make later but now all is completely stable. Oh, and the cutout in the motor housing now correctly aligns with the chassis position.

The result is quite something. Compared ( from memory) to the old spring suspension the overall resulting sound is far more neutral. That is the natural timbre of instruments is better revealed and the difference between recordings from different sessions or record labels is more marked. Bass is not extended further( it was always good) but has gained pitch and detail. Background noise is zero except for any pressing or tape modulation noise etc. on the disc. Although the turntable has gained neutrality this is in no way sterile and the ability of the Orbe to communicate is enhanced not diminished. Likewise the wide and deep three dimensional soundstage is improved. In particular regarding the bass end of things, the sound no longer tends to clump around the speaker position. These are all details, though, compared to what I find is the main benefit. The overall stability of the sound reveals entire passages of music that had previously passed unnoticed. That is, what may have been a generalised, pleasant, orchestral wash of sound now attains form and structure giving it real meaning. This is a major achievement.

I am absolutely knocked out with it. The above relates to the situation so far with the stereo arm/cartridge. Now to fettle the mono arm and cartridge.
One thing that I forgot to mention ( should you wish to use my comments as a quote anytime) is the great reduction in audible wow that the lack of lateral movement of the chassis that the new suspension provides. In fact I have been trying discs that could bother me greatly due to being slightly off centre with the old spring suspension exaggerating the effect. Now those same discs are easier to listen to with some of them now no longer providing audible wow ( it is no doubt still there for a meter to find but I listen with ears). regards

Sure, get the downsides of Gert's kit. I had fantastic results with it, hence my input.

yes i no , but gert will not sell the suspension as it does not work with out the plastic padding /sand.and holes drilled, which you might as well call it a gert pederson and not michell, this way you can just take the spring out and use them or send them back ,
i had a talk to gert who would not sell the suspension which only uses 3 o -rings and wobbles from side to side if you don't use the kevlar wires , to get the orings to work he has to load the chassis with the sand and plastic padding to get the weight so the suspension works , all the mods i have done in the past mean the deck can be reverted back to the standard state, Not with A Gert mod, the gerts mods cost £600 , the arm board £100 , can be made for £20 ,

good luck and i thank you , the problems with the only option is people are very weary to take these up , when they do they seem to be very happy with the out come, but as this is a hobby , the cost is still low, compared to other stuff out there which as you say has been the only option for years , these took 3 years to get them correct but are still bespoke to the deck , Michell never made the chassis the same each deck is different in the size of the spring holes , it has made it very hard to do any work with them at all
but thank you i hope they do become a commercial product , and the community accept them ,

Hi Peter,
I love your mod's, especially the delrin suspension mod. I'm really interested in that mod. How does one go about getting some? I couldn't see any of the images on AOS since I'm not a member. I have an Orbe SE that I've done some work on but it could use more. Feel free to contact me direct.
I use a TT mat and use the Gyro clamp set up instead of the Orbe's. In fact I liked it so well I use it on my TW Acustic.

Hi gwernaffield, how can I get my hands on some of these to try out?, I've been wanting something to do what the Gert ones do without the major works on the deck to prevent the lateral movement and your ones look like they could have it cracked.

Hello i do not do loan or try out sets as every set is made to fit the deck you own and cannot be used on another deck as michell never kept to one size hole in the chassis , it has caused a major problem , which is in the process of getting sorted out ,, all the chassis out there are different in the hole sizes, not one is the same,, all michell did was to make the spring retainer to that one chassis, if you order a replacement you will get a undwer size one,, the holes can be 34.9 mm to 33.4 mm , i am not a business,

pete
