Hi Trab. Which Lampizator DAC do you have, and which other rectifiers have you compared the Fivre to? Can you expand on what ways it differs/betters those other rectifiers and which output tubes you feel it mates best with?

Hi Adamaley,

I got "kind of BIG 7" balanced model. Sylvanias 45 NOS are output tubes and, starting from most often used, I prefer three rectis:

5R4GY Fivre double D getter, brown base, gray anode – natural voice and tone, like no other recti I tried, not so dark sounding

U52 GEC black base, cup getter – spacious, soft,

5R4GY Fivre double D getter, brown base, black anode (can be Brimar branded) - dark sound with a good bas control.

From current production I had EML 5U4G MESH and KR short, fat bottle - sorry, don't remember the name. May by I should try other types, but I turned to NOS market and got a lot of satisfaction there. I tried about 20 types (it's crazy ) and there is no use to list all of them.

Conclusion is I prefer 5R4GY, double D getters from Fivre or Brimar.

Their full, deep, dark sound draws me into the music. For me they sound organically natural.

I have three almost the same types of Fivres. All double D getters.
One with black base, the other has black anode, but only the third - grey anode / brown base, sounds unique for me.

Why Fivre ?
It can be as good as Brimar (or better). Costs less. Its a bit easier to find NOS on the market.

I got two more quads of output tubes, KR PX4 and PSvane 101D white base. They sound different to 45, of course, but the impact of the recti stays more-less similar in type with all of them.

Cheers,

Thanks for the detailed breakdown. Looks like I need to give the Fivres a try.

@Trab Would you say your preference is for the grey anode vs the black anode?
@adamaley most tubes I use have black anode, but ... when cooking I prefer not only use salt, but a bit of pepper too. ;)

There is one such a Fivre tube on ebay, but costs a lot, like we had a follower here.

Sure you understand my perplexity, I cannot assure the final effect at someones system.

Last time I took my tubed pre to a friend. We changed the tube for a metal based one with a great result. When I got back home I was disappointed with my system. First I tought it was due to traveling with a tubed gear. Need time to settle. Than I checked all cables. After two weeks I got an idea to come back to my previos tube. Bingo !
That was yesterday.
It may be trivial, but still surprises me how delicate our systems are, and how the gear is connected or depends on each other.

Cheers,

Weighed the Lampi came in at 14.9 KG so ordered these.

Will post an opinion after having them for a while.

In short the stock rubber feet provide better isolation than the maglev feet.

So I put the rubber feet on top of the maglev feet for best effect. I like the look. I can't say there's much change in sound.

Thank you for the feedback on your feet experiments.
Did you also try other products?

I've had the USAF 596 for the last week and a half and I've finally gotten a chance to try it out in place of the RK 5U4G. This ugly bastard is really giving the RK a run for its money. I'll have to give it some more time to settle in, I've also had a new preamp to play with and KR PX25 RK incoming this week. Due to so many changes, I'll hold off on comparisons for now, but I'm certainly hearing a more quiet tube that's letting in gobs of information.

I have used a 596 in many components and always seem to stick with it. That's why I bought a dozen of them 10 years ago!

Just got a 1930s AVO back I have owned for years. It's been fixed at last and also modified to test 211s.

It will also test all my Lampi valves too. And a whole host of others. I really do have a lot of valves stashed away. Can now sell them as tested.

Info and pics here.
