I may be a lone caller on this fellow--but I'd still rate my old boss

--inspite of all that feedback the Electro Research A75 was one helluva amp:p!

RIP old Mate:rolleyes:

I had an interesting phone conversation with John Iverson about a week before he disappeared.

My Electron Kinetics Eagle 2 had a wonky on/off switch, so I called John. Apparently the FBI had recently confiscated his loudspeaker and all of his design notes. He was quite upset. My recollection is that he had filed a patent application and in response the FBI showed up. He told me they had accused him of stealing secrets from the Stategic Defense Initiative ("Star Wars") missile defense program. This was my first and only conversation with John and to say that he was colorful and animated and enthusiastic would be a huge understatement.

The Eagle 2 would drive a .55 (point five five) ohm load all day long. That was the impedance of a Strathearn "ribbon" (actually a planar magnetic) sans transformer, which was how it sounded the best.

BruceD, you wrote "RIP old Mate". I hope you don't mind me asking - has his passing been confirmed?

Wasnt Paul Heath a dealer?

I don't think Paul was a dealer, but Mel Schilling in Woodland, CA was probably his foremost dealer in the late 70's. Mel's dealership (Music and Sound) was in a very hot hi-end epicenter in the San Fernando Valley, with Bongiorno (GAS) and Arnie Nudell (Infinity) all within a stone's throw from each other at the time with Ken Kreisel (M&K) and SAE not too far away. Heady days. Paul was at the other end of the country in Rochester, NY, where I worked part-time in the early 70's before heading to LA to attend med school.

Ah Duke, My apologies for just picking up on your posting-

Yes I worked with him for a few months when he was in Orange County Factory
--we had the Force field Speaker (Neural Density Bombarder official moniker;))
I slept in the same damn room as that mini Chernobyl!--I'm still kicking on tho --so far so good:p!
I've heard that speaker through stages of development and always gave my opinion when John asked.

Frankly even now in 020--I've heard nothing Nix/Nada that comes close to what that Unit did produce sonically--the few that have heard it will I'm sure endorse this fact--apart from it did NOT play "loud" but spaced the music with a soundstage that eclipsed "loudness" as from a
normal speaker-- all I'll say it's Music presentation was the purest playback form I've ever experienced--IMHO.

Here's simple trick John got his listeners to perform--try it with todays speakers--

Play a track reasonable full volume-place your cupped hands tightly over your ears and see if you experience a loss of output-dulling /softness of volume/etc--yes?---with the FF's no loss of volume with the cupped hands --the sound is still apparent to the level with NO hands but its inside your head-can I explain it no--do I have the answers no!--maybe a member here with knowledge of Human Brain acoustical reaction /etc/etc can answer--I cannot even to his day.

That said there is too much to explain in this posting on the Speaker--another time maybe.

He had the Electro A75's and also two Box speakers in production as well--my main Job was goo coating on their Cones!
The Eagles were after I'd left.

I had two specially made A75's which I used into stacked Dayton Wrights XG8's driving the primary of the Transformers direct-- .25 ohm!

Yes at that time Ray his father was sleeping in the factory --he was ill with cancer and died not long after I heard
--the cause was always deemed to be from the secretive AWACs Air Shield program he was involved with --he was lovely man but never spoke
about his work on that to me.

John was a flawed genius-- ego driven and a very intense complex individual--we had some crazy times together --he was always asking what others thought of him and his ideas were radical on some fronts.

His father and he had a prototype design for a Subsonic Bass Wave Generator that could knock over Skyscrapers--I've seen the Paper on that-
they were preparing for the Defence Dept ---don't know what happened there after Ray passed on.
Thats what the FBI maybe were after--I do know John could not leave the US without official permission and he always said to me he was being watched.

Anyway Duke --glad you caught up with the man--re his demise --well who knows frankly the truth--I'd say possibly he has left us for the great lab in the Sky.

Hope you don't mind the rant!--Oh yes always liked your Show demos--w'eve chatted and kudos to you and you speakers!

I recall he got stopped for speeding in west Texas and offered to fight the patrol officer over the ticket. As I heard it he won and they both went for a drink.

Great Story Duke , Iverson was really one of a kind . Interesting what you said on the Eagle 2 driving .5ohm , I heard an Eagle 7 on a 1 ohm apogee and it would shut off at any attempt to raise the volume above moderate levels ...

The Eagle 7 was really happy at 4 ohm and above , great amp like the Audire’s of the era .

Julius made great amps too ...!

No one has mentioned Jim Strickland of Acoustat. Here is a little history on him and the Hafler, name which he became affiliated with ultimately.

Jim Strickland's electrostatic speakers were very difficult to drive, so he came up with his oun amplifer so he could sell his speakers. The Trans-Nova amplifer he came up with could drive low impedance loads unlike other solid state amplifiers of the time period. Jim Strickland subsequently went to Rockford Corporation where he was the Chief engineer.

In 1987 Hafler sold his namesake to Rockford Corporation and Jim Strickland took on the challenge of moving the Hafler nane towards building high end amplifiers. The result was the Hafler 9300, 9303, 9500 and 9505 amplifiers that used the Trans-Nova design concept and added the DIABLO driver circuit to later models. There wer many smaller power variants, but all were noted to have very good sound quality for their price points. The Trans-Nova design was alos popular in the professional world because of their durability and sound quality. The professional versions were P-XXXX models. I have a new unused model P-7100 in the box still. It was 350 Watts per channel and had built in crossover that con be user configured. I purchased it when Rockford Corporation decided to get out of the professional and home audio business. They were know as Rockford Fosgate at that time and currently.

In 2001 under the Fosgate Audionics name they introduced two new amplifiers for the home theater market, FA600.3 and the FA1000.5, feeding 200 watts per channel. The amplifiers utilized a Trans-ana circuitry, an improvement on the Trans-nova technology, but manufactured at a lower cost, using a switching power supply to drive the amplifier stages.

The Hafler name was sold to Radial, which began the affiliation with Rockford, taking on the distribution of Hafler amplifiers for Canada. Radial purchased the Hafler brand from Rockford in 2014 with a goal of eventually re-launching some of the Hafler classic amplifiers. a canadian that is now bringing back.

More on Jim Strickland designs.......

I also have a Fosgate Audionics FA1000.5 that is still used in my A/V system. It desplaced a Hafler 9300 that was in my A/V system, which now gets borrowed once in a while to friends that are not audiophiles, but need to hear what a better amplifier can do for ther systems. The Trans-Nova design was even used in automobile amplifiers under the Hafler Trans-Nova. still have a new in box Hafler Trans-Nova MSE88tn 4 channel automobile amplifier that never got installed before I sold the car it was planned for. So Jim's designs may not have landed in the very high end world, but his amplifier technolgy was used across a wide range of applications.

Well I may be accused of bias, but I put Stavros Danos in the hat, of Aries Cerat. Rewinding to the time before I became an AC distro, I was shocked how radically different his approach is, and how since then he has forged ahead with so many remarkable amplifier designs. Size and weight is of no consequence, which in itself is a brave path to take. And many other constraints are thrown in the trash can. There is much more to come from Stavros, .....watch this space.

This is around the time I discovered Stavros:

I would say it is the buyer (both financially and physically) that is the brave one for this decision ;)

Surprised not to see Hans Ole Vitus mentioned yet, I´d love to listen to / own an SIA-030.

Hm, not sure if it is possible to separate great designer from music presentation we like. And I suspect you would need to ask in the designer circles to establish the most „respected“ moniker.
but here you go, besides many already mentioned
- Alexey Syomin, S.A. Laboratory
- Roland Krammer, Crayon Audio
- Don Garber, Fi
- Naoto Kurasawa, Technical Brain
- Serge Schmidlin, Audio Consulting
