The REF40 is the nickname of the Anniversary preamplfier. I should not say it, as I am trying to sell the VTL 7.5 mk3  , but I also preferred the Anniversary in my system, although the VTL could show more detail of the recording - surely it is less colored.
Felt like bass was missing with vtl. Brighter in highs.

Thank you. Patience will be virtue here !! Covid has made wilson travel people very nervous.

I do like the Boulder better -- quieter, more music, no tubey sound, better user interface. The 1110 turns on instantly, I came to detest the countdown on the Ref40. It is much better looking, I like the single box design and better build.
Ok thx. !!!

No such issues with the Momentum HD - infact you realise what the bass is meant to sound like - much more controlled, which is what you would kind of expect from solid state compared to valve.

Great stuff...I see you in your XLF photo that you do not have Thors in the corners...did you have them at all (ie, elsewhere in the room?) If you did not have Thors, did you ever try/consider it?

Was there a specific reason you went with the Subs with the WAMMs?

Good questions but no. Never had them. Always thought room was little small for them but it wasnt till i did the demo at Jacobs house with wamm and subs on and off comparison that i knew i had to have them. At one point before my wife talked me down , i was going to do construction to expand the room out 4.5 ft. !!

I also had the left channel go out on my Ref40 late last year and sent it back to Minnesota to get fixed. Seems a tube went bad and took out one of the boards too. .

I got off that train years ago. I was tired of sending stuff back to Minnesota. If you think it's a pain to do that for their preamp, try shipping some of their monster amps like the 610. Tubes going out and blowing up boards is bad design, period. Moving to VTL Siegfrieds was a welcome change (until I discovered Soulution).

I am grateful that you discovered WBF and have chosen to share your system with us. We usually read about components like these in reviews only and rarely see photos of such gear in people's houses. It makes it all more real somehow. I also appreciate your willingness to accept suggestions about gear. I do enjoy reading about systems at all levels and typologies and how they fit into the lifestyle of the owners. Welcome again to the forum.

Excellent! Very very interesting, and fwiw, I have had subs in 6 rooms over the last 20 years. Obviously with varying degrees of success...but ultimately, with the X1s and now the XLFs (which are still yet to be set up/calibrated to the system/room)...I have always found that even when severely cut off above 40hz and basically silent through certain passages, they are a must have for me when it comes to that sense of the venue, the spacial cues, the 'enveloping sense of space and realism'...and of course certain music where there actually is a lot of information in that subterranean level. And that is a single DD18+, let alone dual Subsonics...

Your wife didn't try and talk you down from the WAMS/subs! :)

How big is your room, and are the walls solid or timber frame?
