I am looking to seriously upgrade my digital streaming sound quality. I've read all the raves about the Taiko Extreme server. I just want to see if anyone who had/has this impressive unit in their system now thinks differently.

IMO you'd be hard pressed to find anything comparable let alone better. I haven't read anyone posting negative comments about Taiko

It doesn’t have a DAC? What does it do?

Seriously though, I am perfectly happy with my Extreme. It has worked faultlessly for the year or so that I've had it. Sounds great and service is exemplary. Not much I really need from a server apart from these 3 things. I'm sure there are great alternatives such as the Inuos Statement, Aurender W20SE and Wadax servers etc but I have not had the opportunity to do back to back comparisons with them.

Aurender just came out with a N30. But again, probably no one has had both in their listening room.

Wow, anything decent is going to crush your Small Green computer and Rendu SE setup. But, you may still have significant streaming limitation. I don't see where you have invested anything into your digtal backbone. And what about your 120 volt power supply. Have you optimized your electrical infastructure. Those 2 things will vault your overall performance above where it is today.

Nope; not even me, and I don't even care for digital.

It happens to be the case that all three of the best digital systems I've ever heard all use the Extreme as the server.

If i had the budget i would get Totaldac d1-Twelve mk2 with the Taiko Extreme, best combo i can think of.
Just my 2 cents.

there are likely at least half a dozen 'perfect' dacs for the Extreme. with many fans for them all.

MSB, Lampi, Totaldac, and dCs are often mentioned. read below in my signature about my favorite.

looks like you are digital only. would you prefer that your dac be used as your preamp? that might add to what you can spend on a dac, and increase system elegance. while outperforming most all stand alone preamps.

my opinion is that priorities should be that the dac has a hybrid approach that is bit perfect and as effective with dsd and pcm. dacs that inherently up-sample play catch up. might sound great now, but over time it's not where (it currently looks like) things are going.

some dacs are designed around particular interfaces; so you should investigate how that plays out with the Extreme. the Extreme can accommodate any interface, but where is the best performance? will the dac approach be any restriction going forward? how agile is the dac maker at adjusting to new over-the-horizon interfaces?

the other thing is that if Taiko already has a relationship with the dac maker that can only help. not to say that it is a requirement.

Isn't that the Wadax Reference Dac?

The screenshot and link were intended to refer back to a series of posts in which another member looked for weak points in the Extreme server. Possibly the only disjointed reception it received here or elsewhere.

In other words, ask them. ;)

I think when you're building your system around the best quality digital, the Server is important not just for the hardware but for the ongoing research and development you're buying into. Emile and the Taiko team are really amazing in this regard as evidenced by their current development of a new USB driver, a dedicated data switch and their own music player (alternative to Roon) which is optimized for sound quality. It's fair to say they will continue pushing the envelope. Imo, if you're using digital, take a seat on Taiko bus, and don't look back!

there are a few more DAC's that should be mentioned including the CH m1.1 with all the toys and the Wadax Reference. IMO they would rate with or above some of those mentioned. I have listened to all but one of them.

I am very happy with the Extreme with the DCS Vivaldi, but the only "serious" server I listened to in my system was the Innuous statement, at less than half the price of the Extreme. However the Extreme is a generic server, and considering that this is an hobby ruled by matching and preference, we can't exclude that a server manufactured expressly to a particular DAC can be preferred with such DAC. Considering you are thinking about the changing the DAC I think it is hard to answer your question.

I am not running the alpha versions of the currently being developed Taiko TAS, but just now a physical SACD still sounds better in my Vivaldi stack than the equivalent DSD ripped file.
