Has Magico lost its Touch?

I was not addressing what you buy and prefer, just what you generically wrote about the progress in this hobby.
Anyway progress and success are not forcefully linked. IMHO surround sound (multichannel) is surely progress in sound reproduction but most of us, including me, still prefer stereo.
Sales across the globe for Magico A, S and M series speakers is at an all time high. The few visitors that have actually heard the M9s have comments as in the last paragraph of this recent industry update.

Big, physical, powerful, and at the same time relaxed… thats what I heard too. There were no speakers even though its hard to deny the physical size and imposing stature. Once the first notes are heard you are completely unaware of there being “speakers,“ there is only the sound.

Smaller than the Reference models lack crucial mid bass impact and have limited dynamic range for their price league and aspirations IMHO., especially compared to the concept of live absolute sound, not to mention few other brands. The best Zellaton IMHO are the Legacy model monitors using their 5 inch driver, which is an attempt to reverse engineer the legendary Pawel Acoustics/Ensemble PA1 monitor. I have not heard the new Evo, but REALLY tried to like other Zells, but just could not justify spending so much on those with aforementioned shortcomings. However some folks love them, as they sound lovely with 40-50 audiophile discs , and their owners keep the high powered amplifier makers fat and happy by getting more and more powerful amps thinking that those can improve the sound....The big zellaton were always one of my favorites since I heard them here. They have an apogee like midrange (with more musical detail) with this FM set up. Never heard the smaller ones.

Yes these play at Munich too but don't sound anything like they do at audio arts
I have to agree with you when it comes to Zellaton. They actually sound like one speaker, quick sharp response and the continuity of a large electrostatic panel. You can live with Zells for a lifetime. Using the exact material on all drivers makes it one without mixing different materials or technology. The only tweeter I have ever seen that looks like a regular small speaker instead of a dome of another material.
In my life I have had in just electrostatics, the Quad 57, Quad 63, KLH9, Infinity Servo Static, Mark Levinson HQD system with the double quads, Decca ribbon tweeter and the Hartley 24" subs, Acoustat panels with the woofer and the Zellaton sound is the closest I have heard from a box speaker with the continuity I had with the electrostatic speakers but with more punch and no limitations. Maybe at Munic I will get a chance to hear the new Magico, as long as it is not cancelled again or in Denver in October. I do remember the first time I heard the Zells in Munich and from the moment I walked in the door they were refreshing, clean, fast and single driver sounding.
I get all new post updates from Mono & Stereo and they posted something about the very famous Rick Rubin getting a pair of Zellaton's. Just for info purposes HULU has a 3 part series called McCartnet321 with Paul McCartney and Rick Rubin about the history of many of the recording and how they came to be. Some real interesting stuff. With him buying Zellaton that seems like a good endorsement of a sound that he wants to own. Rick Rubin an "Icon" as a producer but he's also maligned for some awful, overly-compressed sound quality in many of his records. Just take a listen to what he did with Californication. I'm not sure I'd automatically respect his endorsement on speakers, lol! (This is not to say the Zellaton's might not be great).
Yes, I agree that B,S,S, Magic was great. That's why his later work with the Chilies is so disappointing.
