Don came over tonight to listen to tape and to play some of his jazz records. We both continue to be amazed by the sound quality of an old $3,000 MSRP speaker system, and a $3,250 vinyl playback system (including phono stage). Of course $100,000 of VTL electronics in the middle must have a lot to do with it.
I have often said the electronics are more important to realistic sound than the speakers…sure the Pendragons will bring more but the elements of really good sound are already there with the Maggie’s.

I agree 100%. It's just that amplifiers are easier than speakers.

Ron, it IS possible to have great sound on a budget. I've heard multiple modded Thorens 124 setups now, one or two leave me wanting for very little.

Nice work protecting the stair treads.
A very nice Dale Chihuly chandelier!
Funny Chihuly story.

Dale called in to set up an appointment. He set up the appointment with my boss. My boss had absolutely ZERO knowledge of who Dale was (me either) and as they were ending the phone call my boss said "I'll keep an eye out for you"...

When Dale came in my boss was outwardly visibly shook to the core and Dale immediately went to him and told him its ok and by far not the first time that has happened to him and turned it into a laughable moment.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

A few years ago Chihuly had an exhibit at the Biltmore in Asheville. Didn't know much about him at the time. I spent hours there both durning the day and evening taking in this man's amazing glass works....

Sorry but I am comparing to a CR7, which was one of the others (I double checked with my friend who had the decks). He sold the others and kept the ZX-9. It was MUCH better than the CR7, which I know also has a good reputation. No coloration I heard with it . Perhaps the one you heard was not in great repair or not calibrated correctly for the tape used?

Disbelieve if you wish it was clear cut to my friend and I.
Well some people do like the ZX-9, ZX-7, Dragon etc they find the CR-7 clinical. To me the CR-7 shows you exactly what you recorded without adding any of its own sound signature.

Sorry but we found it to be the other way around in direct AB comparison with the sources themselves

Yes, it is a great way to impress friends. These fine large power amplifiers create scale and impress us. I once connected my Sonus Faber Amator to the Audio Reseach REF40/REF750 and the system sounded fabulous. But next day, after the enthusiasm settled and I listened to my more usual recordings , the miraculous effect disappeared and it was just a very good common system.

The same for Magico Mini II with my current VTLs.

THE IO ECLIPSE HAS ARRIVED!!!

CC715724-E5C9-4572-AA47-FCC15F78B105.jpeg

Jim White and his son and colleague, Ozzy, delivered the beast this evening.

This is not the Io of yore. It is noticeably more, maybe wildly more, transparent and resolving and neutral than I remember my old two-box Io sounding like!

Jim said it will go through different sonic phases as it breaks in.
