My all time favorite baseball player. He had an electric quality about him that few players in any sport project. Saw my first major league game in '54 at the Polo Grounds, Giants-Phillies. Mays made an astonishing catch in right center in almost the same place as the one he made against Wertz in the World Series. After 'The Catch' Series game, one of his teammates remarked that the Wertz catch was second only to a similar catch Mays had made against Philadelphia during the regular season. RIP #24.

The '54 World Series had one of the great upsets, with the Willie Mays led Giants sweeping the record setting Cleveland Indians who had won 111 games when there was only a 154 game season. The Indians had the powerhouse four starting pitchers of Bob Feller, Bob Lemon, Mike Garcia and Early Wynn.

Mays was the absolute toast of NYC in the mid-50s. He was frequently seen playing stickball with neighborhood kids in the streets of New York…. for love of the game! New York in the mid-50s had three Hall of Fame centerfielders - Mays, the Yankees' Mickey Mantle, and Duke Snider with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Who was best was endlessly debated during baseball’s 'Golden Age.' Joe Morgan, one of the all time great second basemen, called Mays the best five tool player he had ever seen.

I was saddened when Bill Walton and Jerry West passed. This is much tougher for me. Before there was Jim Brown, Michael Jordan and LeBron, there was Willie Mays.

I am glad I was able to witness greatness in my lifetime.

HI,
He was the best all around player I ever seen.
Everything he did was like poetry in motion.
Had a good life,Barry Bonds Godfather.
