Nice review...In fact, I have similar feelings about this whole thing (although I have only heard m500 at the HK show)...
Righteousness is a dramatic word. I would rather put it as natural, or perhaps supernatural!
Try Stromtank battery if you want the best...
But then again, its effect on the (already excellent) select powerbases could be relatively small.
Stromtank benefits on other components (especially amp) are huge.
The above just my 2 cents
According to the manual, there are supposed to be one main fuse and one unused fuse (in each power base presumably).
I bought a brimar fuse last year and was trying to swap it in, but the local dealer convinced me not to do so, claiming that the original fuse was most balanced. I may yet try...
New renderer 2 up and running at koalakoala's place!
5 units were shipped to Hong Kong last week... many thanks to the local agent Pacific Audio for the speedy installation...
Need time for burning in... First impression - no doubt a significant upgrade over the old renderer.
btw, the Japanese are having audiophile grade nas (like the Fidata I use) with dual Ethernet ports - one feeding renderer direct, second one to router for Wi-Fi control. This way the audio signal is not going through router.
Don't know what Mike would think if I bother him with more suggestions like
- putting Select II directly on the Herzan
- putting the 2 mono bases on separate rack levels
- bypassing the Dartzeel pre altogether, driving 458 direct...(with -6db native dsd option)
Delightful new toys!!
You mentioned the CH mono. Now CH has this X1 dedicated single-component power supply unit. 3 box dac + T1 clock + D1SE transport + 5 x X1 power supplies - that's a 10-headed monstrous hydra!!! Real fun isn't it...
The select II has its only isolation base grounding system (connecting to power amp chaisis). The factory cable provided looks uninspiring though, so I replaced that with a DIY pure silver one (made by my brother).
Additional grounding gadgets could also help. I added a telos gnr active...
Yes, the msb transport is based on oppo. It is not esoteric vrds but from my own experience it is more reliable than eso. I used to own an eso k1, very nice, but sometimes it had mistracking problems, mostly (ironically) on sacd produced by esoteric japan!
The oppo mechanism can...
I was at the HK Show Saturday. The MSB room was so crowded that I could hardly squeeze in. I took a long range shot of the Ref Dac then left shortly (as they were explaining the Italian speakers in which I had little interest).
Glad to hear that their new transport is coming out...
Yes, the Giya 3 has lower sensitivity (87dB) and lower impedance than the Nola Concert Grands (91dB?). Using direct drive, low sensitivity speakers are theoretically beneficial, with a working volume level closer to the optimal bypass level (98 according to latest MSB...
My current system looks like this:
MSB Signature UMT V
MSB Select DAC II, Femto33, 2xmono powerbases
Dan D'Agostino Momentum S250
Vivid Giya G3
Don't think I will elaborate on the merits of directly driving power amp, as others have already described them.
I'm using taoc...
This is koalakoala hailing from Hong Kong.
Been following this thread with great interest...
Just my 2 cents:
1. By all means go for 2x mono powerbases - you won't regret it.
2. Don't stack up your dac on the powerbase.
3. You can do without a preamp - for improved...
