One Amigo Visits Utah To Hear 5 Reference Turntables-My Step Beyond

Here is a part of Turkish Official Journal dated 7 May 1995 about 38 (thirty eight) EMT 927 turntables used by governmentally owned Radio and Television Institution (TRT) that are going to be sold by auction. They are probably sold for a little money and scrapped. Maybe EMT took them back...

One Amigo Visits Utah To Hear 5 Reference Turntables-My Step Beyond

It’s exactly the opposite. EMT 927 is much larger than 950, more famous and better sounding. Price of restored vintage turntables may vary depending on the restoration job. A person may ask a very high price for 950 but idler drive 927 and 930st are the turntables to own from EMT, not the...

The new audiophile vinyl series The Original Source from Deutsche Grammophon (AAA)

Both are all analog and AA is "technically" better than AAA in this case. Because AA releases are recorded direct to disc which eliminates tape recording process. AAA releases recorded to tape first then lacquers are cut from tape. AA releases are directly cut to lacquer. They are also live...

The new audiophile vinyl series The Original Source from Deutsche Grammophon (AAA)

Lacquers can be damaged easily, that is true. Playing them also cause some damage that’s a very well known fact but M. Fremer argues the opposite and I heard him playing a couple of lacquers in Munich last year. They were fantastic. I think lacquers are fragile but if you take good care of them...

Tonearm Setup: Effective Mass, Inertia, and Sound

SME V can handle cartridges up to 14g. SME V has an effective mass of 10,5g. It’s relatively low. If you use a 20g cartridge which has very low 5 - 10 µm/mN compliance then you may exprience tracking problems with SME V. It’s like putting truck suspension to a sedan. I recommend to use a...

The new audiophile vinyl series The Original Source from Deutsche Grammophon (AAA)

    - Original Source is a regular vinyl nothing special but high quality preserved on every stage of manufacturing. It’s cut from the master tape then the vinyl is pressed after 3 step (father-mother-stamper) plating process. That’s it’s disadvantage. - Master Cut is a lacquer not a vinyl. It’s...

Problems with Michell Gyrodec power supply

AFAIK papst is a two phase synchronous motor. There should be a transformer to convert line AC to 24VDC and a capacitor to produce second phase. When capacitor gets toast motor tries to run only with one phase with low torque. If that's what you're facing then replace the capacitor with a new...

    Videos of Acoustically-Coupled Audio Recordings

I can not agree more. Musica Nuda Elanor Rigby was standard test track among my friends 15 years ago. All of us have the album. Unfortunately not the Lp we all bought the Cd. I haven’t listened it since then cause it became irritating after several hundred times. Thanks to this thread it...

    Melody MN845 Tube Amplifiers

You’re right. SET is probably the best design approach only if you can find the appropriate speaker. And that’s a big if.

    Melody MN845 Tube Amplifiers

ATM-3211 has GE 211 tubes. My friend does not consider replacing them. Actually two other friends have 4 or 5 pairs of United 211 tubes but using 2 pairs is very expensive considering the price.

    Melody MN845 Tube Amplifiers

There is a misunderstanding. Of course Amperex or even GE on Kagura sound better than stock. I said on my prior post that Kagura with stock tubes is better than other amps with NOS I mentioned

    Melody MN845 Tube Amplifiers

There is nothing wrong with Cary 211 and I like it but ATM-3211 is head and shoulders above it. I wanted to point out ATM-3211s being good rather than Cary 211s being bad. I haven’t heard Cary 1610 yet.

    Melody MN845 Tube Amplifiers

Exactly. It’s (Kagura) better even with stock tubes. Also gives the impression of being more powerful than electrically more powerful counterparts I mentioned earlier.

    Melody MN845 Tube Amplifiers

IMHO in descending order: Kagura, ATM-3211, Komuro 845, NAF 845. I prefer Komuro 212 over Komuro 845 because you can still get NOS 212 tubes and it’s 50watts of SET.

    Melody MN845 Tube Amplifiers

A friend of mine was using mono 845 amps below until recently. There are two 845 tubes for channel/amp and produce 75watts. It’s a very good sounding amp, he had no complaints but wanted a better thing for a long time. He recently replaced them with more powerful (50watts) Kondo Kagura mono...

    There is a smarter way

I remember trying HQPlayer but I did not compare it to Audirvana either. I'm a long time Audirvana user. It sounds very good especially when filter is set to minimum phase.

    There is a smarter way

I watched the videos and I liked the first one (DHT/SET/HORN). It sounds more intimate, open, natural and totally different than other two to my ears.

Two pairs: My Sonic Lab Eminent Solo mono and Hyper Eminent cartridges, plus Glanz MH-104S and MH-124S tonearms

Neither 1mm nor 0.1mm is correct. It’s 1.0mil which is equal to 0.025mm or 0.7mil which is equal to 0.017mm.

Brinkmann LaGrange with upgraded Sinus Motor - any experiences?

Although I believe the new upgraded motor will improve the performance but the old, standard SME 30/12 still a great turntable. IMHO it's good enough to be considered among top performers. Of course there are much better turntables but they're also much more expensive. Brinkmann Balance is...

Brinkmann LaGrange with upgraded Sinus Motor - any experiences?

IMHO Brinkmann Balance is a great turntable, especially matched with a good arm like 4P. SME 30/12 is another great table and I think it’s even better with new upgraded motor. You can’t go wrong with either of these. I haven’t used standalone sinus motor I don’t know how it performs.

    Question for Brinkmann owners...

Hi rDin, I’m curious about the AM w&f results you shared. Could there be a mistake cause I’ve never came across 0.003% w&f with AM, not even 0.03%. If there is no mistake then they’re absolutely amazing results IMHO.

    Anti Skating?

Cartridge dampers deteriorate. If you don’t think they do, I can’t help you. Sometimes you can see deterioration visually sometimes not. It can be tested using a 7-20 or 30Hz frequency sweep on a test record or it’s best to send it to a professional for inspection. I do it using computer...

The Greatest Hi-Fi Product of All Time

IMHO no mcintosh sounded better than a Marantz 8B or Dynaco ST-70 from the same era.
