    Any cyclists here?

Pretty amazing story. I am very happy you got your bike back Ralph. I know what it must mean to you! A little off topic, but thanks for the reference on for bike registrations. My Richard Sachs was built by one of the all-time great steel frame builders, and is not replaceable...

    Brinkmann Balance/ Kuzma 4P

That's great speed stability. I have a TW Acustic Raven Anniversary (belt drive) with the 3 DC motor (single unit) hooked up to a Roadrunner speed tachometer. It's a somewhat higher mass design than the BB. I do notice more speed variability until the turntable runs for a half hour or so. The...

    Counterpoint tubes

Jazzer: For Rectifier tubes in both the SA_5000 and SA-220 the best by far is the RFT EZ80 from Germany. They're about $20 each. I don't have any recommendations for the other tubes as my NP220 takes a different input tube than the 6DJ8/ 6992 tubes yours uses.

    SA-9 Transformer Replacement

This is a shot in the dark since Alta Vista Audio (Counterpoint) has been out of business for over 8 years, but you may want to try contacting Plitron directly as they may still have the part numbers somewhere. They would begin with AVA (Alta Vista Audio). Try: Anna Perruccio CSR Ext. 234...

Vishay Z-Foil vs Audio Note Non-Magnetic Resistors

No experience with Mundorfs. They get some good reviews over on diyAudio which is where I'd research. I used the AN Kaisei in the signal path, in a low voltage application, NOT in a power supply. There, I found them warm, liquid, a little "oily" sounding, and somewhat bass-shy. It's possible...

Vishay Z-Foil vs Audio Note Non-Magnetic Resistors

Texas Components, the US manufacturer of Z-foil resistors, shows values of 10 to 100K ohms. The voltage rating is 200V and .4watt. They will make custom values for you and you can inquire about that on their US website. Despite having ordered and used a few hundred (they actually emailed me...

No. It's on my list now.

What nice wines did you taste this weekend?

I'm big on fizz. Since there are some Champagne lovers here, if you like rose, you might consider trying this recently released 2012. Lovely red fruits with a touch of spice, well balanced, mouth-watering acidity, and a long minerally finish. Beautiful color. Not into rose, and want something...

I am sick of failing amplifiers

IMHO audio is largely a cottage industry, the owners of the audio companies are getting along in years (and may not be around when you need them), and audio reviews are a mixed bag at best, and a poor means of determining product reliability. Foreign companies may be difficult to communicate...

Allnic H3000 naked z-foil vishay tweak

The Z-foils are the best audio resistor by far. You can almost use as many as you want with no downside, although you need to be careful of their voltage rating in tube circuits. Better transparency and presence with just enough tonal color and very low noise. I have used hundreds of these in...

    Is this voodoo or science?

I've been using the SPEC AP-UDI analog disc sheet turntable mat for a couple of years now on my TW Raven Anniversary turntable. I can't see how anyone wouldn't like it, but YMMV. Good tone color and dynamics, not overdamped or underdamped. You may, or may not, like it with a record weight...

    Ref6 tube rolling

I tried a matched pair of 6H30 DRs in my Ref40 Anniversary power supply back in 2012. Different compared to the Sovteks, but not better to my ears, in my set-up. Buying NOS is a real crap shoot. Yes, price and availability are both problematic, but quality is a big issue too.

    Best Volume Control

Not that simple. You should regard any modification you do to equipment as an experiment. More expensive parts don't always make for a better sound. Good designers spend many hours picking parts that give them the sound they want even if they're working at a price point.

    Best Volume Control

Absolutely if you use decent resistors in the Shallco. I replaced an Alps with a Shallco in a Classe Audio DR-6 MKII preamp a few years back. Unfortunately, the preamp was voiced for the Alps and the resistors I used were Holcos. Better transparency, but overall not a good match musically...

    Ref6 tube rolling

One other quick question, micro. What are your average Mu and Gm readings for your 6H30 matching set-up that corresponds to in-circuit operations? Just trying to confirm other operating parameters.
  22. Barry

    Ref6 tube rolling

Micro, how exactly do you match your tubes in the Ref 10 or 40 Anniversary? My understanding is V1-V4 are the tubes for the R&L balanced gain stage and V5-V8 are cathode followers. Is matching Mu is somewhat more important for the gain stage, and Gm is more important for the cathode...

    Tube Testers

Most everybody uses the Amplitrex AT1000 in stand alone mode to test tubes. However, it can run tube curves in computer mode. To do this you need to load the AT programs on a laptop and connect it to the tube tester.

    Platter mat preferences!

This, or a variant of it, is the same as the TW Acoustic turntable mat. I found music with it sounded just a little bit strange and a touch overly damped on my TW Acustic Anniversary with Lyra Etna and Triplanar VII. What I did end up liking very much was a Spec Audio AP-UD1 which was reviewed...

How many sold out stocks to cash?

Not likely. In the last few days the US Fed has: opened the discount window and encouraged US banks to borrow for their reserve requirements; backstopped foreign central banks' USD swap lines for major currencies; backstopped US commercial paper markets (coprorate short-term loans) for approved...
