New Reel to reel from Analogue audio France TR1000

I'm sure will be a nice machine, but the look reminds me of that awful RCA faux reel to reel contraption from years back.

If tape is so good why does it record so poorly

I spoke with John French at JRF Magnetics who experimented with the Bottlehead kit on the Otari and he advised the same - better to leave the machine as it was originally designed. If I had only the two machines, I would playback on the Studer and record on the Otari. A wise man once told me...

Are there sonic differences between tape transports?

Easily addressed by adding a quarter-track head to the block - this is common and if you're in the US, JRF Magnetics can do that for you. However, given that you're looking to primarily play 4-track commercial tapes, you're splitting hairs sweating over which top-line mastering deck is going...

    Nagra repair anyone!

That's a big gotcha with the Nagra machines - no parts availability and little assistance from Nagra HQ.

    Studer A820 MKI vs MKII

Really insightful, Alan. Thanks for sharing. Are the audio card changes worthy of making to older cards?

    Nagra repair anyone!

That's correct. I have 3 Pelican cases - two for machine 'tubs' and one that's formed to fit either 1 meter bridge and a control panel keyboard or 2 meter bridges. All three were driven from point of purchase in LA to Seattle for work (stands were shipped directly to me from LA via freight)...

    Nagra repair anyone!

According to Doc, Nagra Switzerland never provided him with the help, parts, and knowledge that they promised they would when he initially signed up to be the authorized service center in North America. What compounded this was that, apparently (heard via conversation), their long-time parts...

    Selling my Studer A810

When did Steve do the work? I haven't heard of anyone able to reach him successfully in quite some time.

Advice in buying a Studer A80

Agree - $6k is an excellent price for a properly restored A80R/RC. My guess is $8k with meter bridge.

    Nagra T

Let us know if you end up buying the Nagra T, the UHA, or something entirely different. By the way, I'd echo @Mike Lavigne 's sentiment about the ATR102. Excellent machine, serviceable without a PhD, and incredibly flexible with the ability to swap head blocks & guides in 2-3 minutes as well...

    FS: Ampex MR70 1/4" 2-track (stereo) 7.5 / 15ips tape machine - completely refurbished / ready for operation

Additional photos available via the eBay listing and more will be uploaded. ---- Ampex MR-70 analog tape recorder, desirable and extremely rare with total production estimated at less than 80 total units built. Painstakingly restored by member Tom Bassi, his may be the cleanest, most...

    Nagra T

Assume that any Nagra T that has not been fully refurbished will need maintenance - if not immediately, within reasonable timeframe of purchase if being used on a routine basis. As Mike mentioned, Doc at Bottlehead was designated a Nagra authorized repair center early this year and has since...

    Lyrec Frida PTR-1 service advice

I'm looking at purchasing a Lyrec Frida that is running, but neither channel of the horizontal LED VU meter is illuminating on playback. While this seems like an issue with the VU panel control board versus the LED assembly being burnt out, I'm not at all familiar with the inner workings of the...

WTB (or trade for) Nagra T Audio

Hi, I'm looking to purchase or trade other of my RTR decks (Studer A80, A810, A820, Ampex ATR, Otari various models) for a Nagra T audio with meter bridge. Please PM me if you have one to sell or are looking to trade (or partial trade).

Modifications to Maximize Sound Quality of Studer A820 for Repro Only

I'll bring the King / Cello along with adapters for the Nina on my next visit and we'll compare the three. Perhaps I could even lug a 'portable' ATR with direct outs with me for a true real-time comparison :)

Head direct out on the Studer A80 RC?

Otari MTR-15 Schematics / Extender Card availability

Hi everyone, I used my Otari MTR-15 for the first time in a while earlier this week and have found that one channel is not erasing in Record mode. I have narrowed down the issue to one of the Bias Control cards (PB-4PV), and although I believe the issue could be a bad relay on that card, I need...

Wanted or Trade? Serviced ATR-102 1/4" for Studer A812 or A820

Analog tape media...where to go from here?

Hey Bruce, if you're looking for a home for that ATR tape, I'll gladly take my chances with it. I don't work with nearly the volume tape you do, but have never had a bad batch of ATR, nor RTM. With that said, I've only been using open reel decks for less than five years.

    Calibration tones on pre-recorded tapes?

That was my initial question as well - will there be enough demand globally to support a high-production duplication line? You bring up an excellent hypothesis about providing duplication services for others, but even then the collective demand of all companies currently producing tape still...

    Calibration tones on pre-recorded tapes?

Not that I would remember them, but he didn't touch on technical details as we were covering many topics in the course of our conversation. Though one thing he cited that hampered quality are the choices of recording and playback decks used in the duping process by the current producers.

    Calibration tones on pre-recorded tapes?

He has a staff of three techs who completely refurbish every machine he purchases, so along with completely refurb'd decks, he purchases as-is decks, parts machines, and essentially empty frames. I have acquired several A80s. Like some other members of this site did many years back, I went a...

    Calibration tones on pre-recorded tapes?

It seems that one gentleman from China is setting out to do just that. He claims that none of the current tape producers are creating master dupes correctly and is setting out to (eventually) do it properly. He's currently in the process of mass-acquisition of tape machines to set up his...

Is United Home Audio the BEST tape deck there is? Other than $$$, why choose another tape deck?

You can buy a newly rebuilt ATR102 with warranty and replacement parts will be readily available for a long time to come from ATR Services for far less than the UHA upper-end machines. I'm guessing at this point low to mid-teens for an ATR - the UHA machines approach $20-25k depending on which...
