Phenolic appeals. I have had great results with my permali-cored plinth and armboards.

Miyajima Labs 1.0 mil Infinity Mono

Been contemplating getting one of these for a while to check it out. Past experience with graphite has not been great (a bit harsh sounding) but it seems these headshells are somehow oil treated to smooth this out.

Miyajima Labs 1.0 mil Infinity Mono

I previously had a PSU from Martin Bastin on a 401 - I can't remember if it was regenerating or non-regenerating, but it was able to vary both voltage and frequency. I found it really hard to balance individually the effects of varying voltage and frequency independently. Having owned both, I...

Miyajima Labs 1.0 mil Infinity Mono

I know the designer of the Longdog PSU, Nick Gorham, and have had various bits of his kit over the years. An interesting individual to say the least. In mine, the PSU's second iteration, it has several main features: 1) It's regenerating - it uses a quartz reference generator to reconstitute...

Do You Still Play Compact Discs?

The typical set length at a classical concert is around an hour. However there's no doubt that attention span is heightened at a formal concert and I would say 20-25 minutes per side is ideal when sitting at home, with a house's worth of distractions at at arms length. I know when I'm playing...

Miyajima Labs 1.0 mil Infinity Mono

Well curiosity could be contained no longer .. I finally ordered up a Miyajima Infinity 0.7. It joins a MySonicLab Eminent Solo mono and Otono Edison Replica 4.0 - from the days before Noriyuki Miyajima established his own brand and nowadays known as the Miyajima Kotetu 78 - as the third mono...

Do You Still Play Compact Discs?

If you can't be bothered with the complexity and expense of vinyl that's fine (if I didn't have a collection going back over 40 years, or had sold up in 1990 in a fit of madness, I might not be so keen to get into it either), but I'm not clear on the rest of your point. Are you asserting that CD...

Do You Still Play Compact Discs?

Yes I still play CDs. I prefer vinyl of course, but a lot of classical music has only been available on CD (or latterly streaming) since the 90s or so, so CDs it has to be. I stick with CDs not becase they are so great, but because file-based replay or streaming from online services totally...

Which tube ampli for Tannoy Canterbury Se

Would love to have the opportunity to hear these with my Tannoys. I no longer buy amplifiers without hearing them - too much variability in performance with different speakers, and price is no guide whatsoever!

    EAR Yoshino 912

I enjoyed my EAR912 but it was a far better phono stage than it ever was a preamp - ultimately that's why I sold it. The LCR phono section was hard to replace and I tried quite a number of quite well-reviewed phono stages that struggled to better it. In the end I went for an Allnic H7000V, and...

    SET amp owners thread

Gorgeous. I'm just waiting my turn to demo these with my Audiopax Model 5 and big Tannoys. Tannoys and single ended are not normaly an ideal combination but we'll see ... very much looking forward to it.

    Utter nonsense.

Miyajima Labs 1.0 mil Infinity Mono

It's more than that. Over a decade ago, with a previous equalisation component - an Esoteric Re-Equalizer, which sits in the tape loop and applies re-equalisation to a signal after RIAA conversion - I got a booklet containing multiple pages containing literally hundreds of labels and...

Miyajima Labs 1.0 mil Infinity Mono

I'm sorry I simply don't get the logic of this. Why not have a scale that enables you to set it to 350 and -10 on the dial (the global standard, as I say, for nearly a century) then tweak as necessary. Why have to refer out to a translation table for your numbering system?

Miyajima Labs 1.0 mil Infinity Mono

I agree that we agree on a lot. However I think you don't address my main point. Why mess with an approach that has been globally known and consistently applied for almost a century? Stepless pots are indeed a benefit for tweaking, but it makes no sense to have to refer to a third list, mapping...

Miyajima Labs 1.0 mil Infinity Mono

The problem with using curves named after labels is that most labels changed the values they used over time, as many as twice or three times according to date, and on occasion they are different between the same labels pressed in the US, Europe and Japan. Using a stepless arrangement to allow...

Miyajima Labs 1.0 mil Infinity Mono

I recall putting a straight-through mono system together - modded Lenco, SME 3009 tonearm, Ortofon mono cartridge, passive pre, Leak TL12 monoblock, Quad ESL 63. For the phono stage, Nick Gorham of Longdog Audio in the UK built me a mono phono stage with variable EQ. It was quite fun though I...

Phasemation T-2000 - introduction to my favorite Step - Up

Would be very interesting to try the Phasemation SUTs. The MSL SUTs are on my listening list too. But more out of curiosity as I'm pretty happy with where I'm at at the moment. I agree that the internal SUTs on the Allnic phono stage (in my case the H7000V) are reasonably good (certainly better...

    EAR Yoshino 912

Can;'t say I was over-fussed with the EAR 509 I had a pair of 509 MkII monoblocks and I found them a bit flat-footed with Tannoy 15in Monitor Golds. My favourite in the EAR line was the 861 though with only 32w it obvioulsy is very speaker-dependent. (I also owned the V20, 890 and 899, and heard...

To SUT or not to SUT?

I've owned quite a few EL34/KT88/90/120 push pull valve amps over the years including the Leben CS660P, Radford STA25 (which is 35w EL34) and Radford STA100 (100w KT88) - the latter restored for me by Radford Revival in the UK - as well as EAR 890 and assorted others. My take on PP amps is...

Panzerholz - its application in audio systems

I have a plinth for my TD124 made with a permali core (permali is a very similar material to panzerholz, manufactured in the UK and with a finer grain/more layers per cm, but very similar density and damping, see link), wrapped not in veneer but in solid wood (sapele to match my speakers). The...

Which tube ampli for Tannoy Canterbury Se

Vintage Tannoy drivers are the route I took. I agree on Radford STA25 which is superb with Monitor Golds and Monitor HPDs ... I also had an STA100 (similar design, but 100w with KT88s) which worked beautifully with my HPDs.

There's an interesting thread on the french site club-hifi.com (non-French speakers might want to run this through http://itools.com/tool/google-translate-web-page-translator ) https://shop.club-hifi.com/fr/listings/1247103-atma-sphere-ma-1-mk-3-point-3 I have to say both the original listing...

My preference would be to put your amp in the system and see if it delivers.

Which tube ampli for Tannoy Canterbury Se

I don't believe it's a myth at all - I'm speaking from considerable experience. I have tried a large number of SET amps over the years with Tannoys (and many dozens of amps altogether, owned, borrowed or just visiting), from fleapower 45s and 2A3 (with Tannoy Monitor Golds) right up to 845s...

Which tube ampli for Tannoy Canterbury Se

I've been running Tannoys of one sort or another since the early 80s. The sensitivity figures are not the whole story. Those big cones need quite a bit of starting and stopping which means a decent damping factor/low output impedance That's why single ended amps by and large disappoint with...

How do you organize your classical records ?

Mine (about 4000 records) are broadly organised: - Period (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 'Modern'/20c) - Within period - Composer (roughly in date order within period) - Within composer - Genre (solo instrumental, chamber, vocal, choral, symphonic + concerto) Mono...

In general my digital is better than my vinyl. but my vinyl is better than my digital

Proportion going to streaming services is going up, this is clear from official figures. What remains unclear is the proportional share of what's left between labels and artists. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/streaming-platforms-keeping-more-money-from-artists-than-ever-817925/

Best solid state preamps around $15k used with remotes

See if you can have a listen to an Audiopax ... I've been extremel happy with my Model 5 but if you really must spend more mone then the L50 is superb, I had that on loan while my Model 5 was being built. Mine is in an otherwise all-tube system but fits in beautifully.
