It's long but our team believe it flows well...but it also has video chapters indexed so you can watch short takes if you prefer.

In conversation with Olympic legend and audiophile Mark Spitz

Friends, I had an amazing opportunity to meet and do a video interview with 1972 seven-time gold medal winner (nine total!) Mark Spitz on a trip last week to Los Angeles. Have a look and hit the subscribe button please! We have much more exclusive content on the way!

Dedicated audio room build thread aka The Big Dig

Carlos Danger, That is not even remotely close to where Hugh’s Kodos are set up. The definition of nearfield listening in the pro world is typically within 2-2.5 meters.

    DCS Rossini APEX has arrived!

Apologies the video review is taking a while to get out. We have been traveling with our video guy in Los Angeles and I still need to shoot the final APEX upgrade part next Monday. The good news is we have new mics on the way and our interview with Mark Spitz and Jason Lord here in LA went...

Dedicated audio room build thread aka The Big Dig

Carlos, You have no idea what you’re talking about here. It’s not nearfield-the chairs are far back from the speaker. It’s a standard placement formula developed by Jim Smith based on thousands of meticulous room setups…and that is refined by how Jim’s test tracks play back to him. Also, the...

    DCS Rossini APEX has arrived!

It will keep getting better but I also noticed these same improvements. I am at 140 hours using Roon and the dCS Mosaic app to play a long 42 hour playlist from friend Elliot Goldman.

I am personally one who loves the ORTF live to two track approach but my music collecting (mainly LP and CD) has taught me that multimiked recordings done well can be equally as good. Examples include Jim Anderson's work and that of Mark Waldrep at AIX.

Now at 100 hours on the APEX and it is outstanding in every way. I am collecting my thoughts on the sound and will film more on Monday.

State of the industry - Roy Gregory Editorial

Starting over on a new channel and rebuilding a 50K+ audience will take time. He’s already gone from 300 to 4,630 in a few weeks. He is actually kicking ass. And our advertising campaign is not even off the ground yet!

    DCS Rossini APEX has arrived!

Working on a video review this week. But significant improvements in several areas. It’s a more complex story, but I would say that those who found dCS a little too analytical for their tastes will find a more musical, more elevated sound here from the team in Cambridge.

Beyond USB? What are your experiences with alternative digital cables?

I have had some success with I2S in the past but the dCS really has taught me how good AES is between the transport and DAC. USB has noise issues due to the power leg. It’s really not a great interface imho. Peter McGrath used to carry around the Berkeley USB to SPDIF converter and combine it...

    Done with digital

This is a terrific post that brings up a lot of good discussion. I believe digital does have a challenge over AAA in that the ADC-DAC two step conversion is extremely hard to do with no ill effects. That said, I don’t believe that reference digital is tha far off from reference analog. I...

If you read my post you will find that it contains the reason for the test. The closeness of the playback to the real event is the benchmark. You are effectively using an approach to design a very transparent ADC and DAC. If successful it won’t matter what variety the recording is done on.

    DCS Rossini APEX has arrived!

I am pleased to share that my APEX unit is back and installed in the system. I am shooting a couple of video reviews for the TAS YouTube channel with more details but I can definitely say, with 50 hours on the clock and counting, that this is a major change for an already excellent DAC. Our...

One more observation from a discussion I had with Robert Watts of Chord DAC fame. He felt, and I strongly agree, that in order to really test a DAC beyond just measurements (assume subjective and objective are required for the discussion) you need to make an ADC. The idea is that with an ADC...

    Done with digital

I was just about to type something similar. A little thought experiment…. Maybe I am right and DSD is on par or arguably better than 24/96 PCM. There is some significant consensus on this among recording and mastering engineers. Maybe Mike is right and he has special insights from his Wadax...

    Done with digital

There are three things, imho, that really determine sound quality in digital formats: 1. Original recording: mic placement, quality of recording format, ADC quality, etc. 2. Mastering quality: quality mastering engineer? Good tape research? 3. Digital playback format: higher resolution the...

    Done with digital

My testing on live events suggests that DSD is a bit above 24/96 PCM, all else being equal with a split mic feed.

    Done with digital

Agree that there are many more PCM recordings. I find it interesting that on the Wadax you find DSD sounds similar to 16/44. I may have to make a trip to Washington state sooner rather than later. ;)

While I agree that both DSD and PCM sound can sound truly spectacular, I don’t believe it’s incorrect to have a preference. But it does take live instruments recorded and played back in real time perhaps to have an informed opinion. It’s also a bit challenging as you need to use high quality...

I might be able to make them available. But it would not be the whole picture as we compared the playback to the live event in real time during a long soundcheck.

    She does.
  28. Lee

    Done with digital

Nope. If you record instruments and split the mic feed, it’s an apples to apples comparison. DSD is not “polite”. It’s just more transparent and musical in my experience.
