Indeed, but in the two balanced stages of gain there will be 4 active devices. A single ended 2 stage design will only have 2 active devices, so half the number of active devices of the balanced stage. When you get to this level, the customer should have some understanding of the design/implementation to know what is good and what is bad, in order to make sure the system is coherent so that every piece of electronics complements each other. Single-Ended Triode (SET) Amplifier Revolution of the 1990s. Did it really happen? Was it Successful?
It is perfectly possible to design and build a totally silent SET amplifier that you can put your ear to 105dB horns and hear zero noise from the drivers, as in no hiss or hum. I have been doing this commercially for over 25 years so you can hear the best from the SET topology.- G T Audio

Note: The UK mains voltage is 240v, (nominally 230v +10%/-6%) so best to see if your Ref40s can be converted to 240v working. Some UK mains voltages go as high as 253 volts and above.
