    Best phono stage?

My answer is correct, as I am on this high end forum where I would have expected audiophiles to want to know about the tech and design and what they are buying with their hard earned money. Most of my customers take a great deal of interest in the design and the technology. The consumer PC...

    Best phono stage?

Indeed, but in the two balanced stages of gain there will be 4 active devices. A single ended 2 stage design will only have 2 active devices, so half the number of active devices of the balanced stage. Plus there will be the extra components required for the 4 active devices over the 2. Then you...

    Best phono stage?

When you get to this level, the customer should have some understanding of the design/implementation to know what is good and what is bad, in order to make sure the system is coherent so that every piece of electronics complements each other. Its not uncommon these days for Audiophiles to buy...

    Best phono stage?

And do these "many" know what it takes to design and make a really good phono stage? If they did, it wouldn't include any screens or digital circuitry. It would be a purist totally analogue design, and probably a tube design to boot...

    Best phono stage?

You have to know and understand at circuit level what it takes to make the finest sounding phono stage. To get the very best sound the RIAA circuit needs to be very simple with very few parts in the signal path and no switches or display screens, preferably a single-ended circuit using a couple...

What are the Top Horn Speakers in the World Today? Vox Olympian vs Avantgarde Trio vs ???

If we are talking about full range horns, then any "Top Horn Speaker" made today would have to have a bass horn to handle the bass below 100Hz, preferably a forward firing one, and one that goes down to at least 30Hz @ -3dB, or 20Hz @ -3dB would be even better. One would have to consider a...

Single-Ended Triode (SET) Amplifier Revolution of the 1990s. Did it really happen? Was it Successful?

It is perfectly possible to design and build a totally silent SET amplifier that you can put your ear to 105dB horns and hear zero noise from the drivers, as in no hiss or hum. I have been doing this commercially for over 25 years so you can hear the best from the SET topology.

I will reply to you on this when I have more time, probably at the weekend.

    Zero Distortion: Tango Time

Yes. I bet it does. I've never rated the newer SME tonearms with the exception of the M2-12R. Tonearms like the Schroder and Thales are significantly better than any SME IV/V and V12...

    Zero Distortion: Tango Time

The VDH will perform a lot better if it's put in a good modern rigid tonearm like a Schröder or a Thales etc.

Do be aware that Quad ESLs, both original (ESL57, ESL63) and the modern ones made under Chinese ownership, are not that reliable and will require servicing and repair, if being looked at as a long term purchase. Unlike conventional box type loudspeakers including horns etc which very rarely...

No spin, just 50 years of audio experience, including 25 years manufacturing some of the best sounding audio products and working with some of the worlds top audio manufacturers. You forgot to mention the numerous preamplifiers I have made for clients using active speakers like ATC's. Back in...

In order to achieve one amplifier per driver you will need an active crossover (analogue or digital) and this would have to sit between the system preamplifier and all the power amplifiers needed for each of the drivers. The active crossover can be done using active components, as in op-amps or...

Note: The UK mains voltage is 240v, (nominally 230v +10%/-6%) so best to see if your Ref40s can be converted to 240v working. Some UK mains voltages go as high as 253 volts and above. I have measured 256 volts here which is just outside London. This will have a big impact on the operating points...

I have been involved in the manufacturing and the repair of electronics for over 40 years and I have had pretty much everything through our workshops, so I speak with experience. There are numerous posts on forums about this subject. Check out the Devialet Phantom for example. This speaker...

I have not said that Cessaro horns do not have any colouration. I have made the point that compared to the wood horns they used before, the later moulded horn offer significantly better audio performance. Cessaro bass horns are not made from wood. They are machined from a special polymer...

What are the Top Horn Speakers in the World Today? Vox Olympian vs Avantgarde Trio vs ???

Its not vacuum formed plastic. There is a male and a female part to each mould. Each mould is precision machined for a perfect horn. Each horn is injection moulded using ABS in the AG models. It's also about consistency too and that equates to how each horn sounds. For example 2 machined wood...

You won't find many musical horn instruments made from wood apart from the Oboe, Clarinet and bassoon and these are not strictly horn instruments. Whereas the Trumpet, Tuba, French horn, Saxophone, Trombone are all made from brass not wood.

What are the Top Horn Speakers in the World Today? Vox Olympian vs Avantgarde Trio vs ???

My reference to wood horns being cheap, is anyone can get a few sheets of plywood, which is what the majority of commercial horns are made from, cut them into squares sections and glue them together and then machine them on a wood lathe. This is cheap when you consider the huge cost of getting...

I, along with many others were witness to the differences in horn sound when we exhibited with both wood horns (Munich 2012) and carbon fibre/rubber resin horns (Munich 2013 & 2014). The lack of colouration was significant going from wood to modern non resonant materials which is why Cessaro...

It's important to keep commercial designs and DIY designs separate as they are very different beasts and have differing sets of requirements. Which is why commercial products like AG and Cessaro horns can be great buys, especially some of the older AG models... P.S. Re the Red Sparrow...

Seeing as OP asked what are the top horns speakers in the world then one to add to the list is Cessaro Horns from Germany. Prices starting from €35,000 and go to well over €1,000,000 depending on the model.

I have heard that speaker quite a few times, but the Pnoe it is not a full range sound as it has no real bass. If you want bass you have to add a sub or an active bass horn.

What are the Top Horn Speakers in the World Today? Vox Olympian vs Avantgarde Trio vs ???

The horn colouration you heard is down to partnering amplification, cabling and system set up which the AG's are extremely critical of. If its not done right you will hear it! Wood horns will produce more colouration than ABS or Kevlar if done correctly. Remember spherical horns are as near to...
