Mid range phono stage... what shortlist? (£2k second hand)

I have the Whest 40SE previously before upgraded to Titan Pro series, the 40SE is absolutely brilliant although at a much higher price tag. Great definition and accurate sound, but better to pair with warmer interconnect or power cable IMHO. A bit clumsy to access the dip switches underneath...

Argento Serenity Speaker cable : poor build quality !

My impression is quite different, I have purchased the Argento FMR EE powercord during summer time from a local authorized dealer, the built quality is excellent, I am highly satisfying the sound, to be honest, it better than any other cables I have tried, i could not get any happier than this...

Seismion - new active isolation platform from Germany

I also bought a Seismion platform and it sounds quite amazing on my preamp. Separation of musical instruments were much better, notice of fine layering in the soundstage, result in wider and taller stage unlike the other products i've tried (i.e spikes, passive platform) which always uplift the...

Kuzma 4 point 14” cartridge compatibility?

The minimum antiskating for the 4points is 1g according to the instruction manual, i also think it is way too much for some cartridge i.e VDH, I doubt if the manufacturer provides a smaller bias as an option to purchase. Or simply do not use antiskating at all.

    Grand Cru Elite

The Grand Cru Elite utilizes a different type of wood than the normal Grand Cru has. Agree with Peter, it has remarkable spatial information like the MS but in a more linear presentation especially in the upper frequency, in my opinion, the Elite still retains some of the strengths of the Grand...

    Zero Distortion: Tango Time

Thanks for the sharing Tang, it is very comprehensive and informative. I also found out there are pros and cons using SUT, heavily reliance on personal preference and the type of recordings that the user listen in most. Love or hate situation, cannot have the goodies of both world.

Cut off for Transparent Audio Hi-Z and Low-Z speaker cables ?

Thanks Karen for the detail explanation. A cable with a network box i.e. Transparent Cable, there is no optimum cable length, simple saying, a pair of 10 feet speaker cable perform identical to the 8 feet version. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Cut off for Transparent Audio Hi-Z and Low-Z speaker cables ?

Hi Karen, I would like to ask whether a better sound could be achieved by utilizing a longer lengths of speaker cable, there was some discussion out there saying 3 meters is better than 2.5 meters, in some extreme case 4 meters sounding the best. Any insight to share? Tks.

    The Colibri “Master Signature”

I recalled vdh rates their cartridge at 5.6cm or 5.7cm per second instead of the convention 3.XXcm by some Japanese manufacturers

    Ortofon SPU WOOD? any users?

I am also using Wood A on my Schick arm with the APJ adaptor, I agree the sound is very good especially for Pop and Jazz style of music, however I have difficulty setup the arm in perfect alignment (protractor) possibly due to the fact of adaptor has some sort of deviation. The distortion could...

Speakers for Kondo Ongaku... Please Help

FM Acoustic preamp in most circumstance must pair up with their own poweramp, the gain of the FMA preamp is too overwhelming, it will cause overload to most amp unless it has a "variable" gain switch (like the FMA amplifier).

    Sme 3012 R

If this applies to all former SME cable (i doubt) which could possibly mean the capacitance is pre loading to the cartridge, in my experience some phono stage design the starting point is 100pf while some others were close to 0pf, higher the figures which could tame the treble.

    Sme 3012 R

Anyone has experience of the structure of the 3012 tonearm cable, due to suspicion of broken wire issue, I have to disassemble the cable completely to see what happen, surprisingly I found out there is a small carbon resistor (or capacitor) hidden inside the plug on one end with a label 221...

van den Hul Colibri Grand Cru

Both video are really good but i think the first one (GC) was more emphazes on mid-bass which will give a heavier sense (or richer) on every note, result could arguably less "air" or "ambient" than the 2nd video (MS), the MS may give an impression to seat further from the instruments but...

    My Sonic Lab

Interesting?! I never found the MSL Plat out of the box to be too smooth, in fact, it was a bit burnished to my experience. I revisit the instruction menu, it said the loading would be ideal at 200 - 300 ohm. But of course, it is only a general guideline, different components could contribute...

    My Sonic Lab

I have tried quite many loadings for my MSL Platinum from 100 to 1000ohm, found the most appealing would be between 250 to 350 ohm, capacitance at 100 pf. This could varies according to cables or different phono amp but the sound would become weird if wrong loading/cap have been applied.

    Opus1 vs. MSL Platinum

Different setting of VTF could give a very noticeable sonic difference in terms of body and weight vs bright and lean. I recalled the manufacturer recommend 1.9 - 2.3 gram of tracking force according to the instruction manual. However, I found out in my setup, MSL sound best in the lower side...

    My Sonic Lab

I am not sure the price in the state but you could find it easily in Tokyo Japan when i was in a trip, they usually have full list of models from Eminent GL to Platinum Sig. I think the SG is definitely the way to go without regret if you could stretch it.

    My Sonic Lab

There are quite many saying the Eminent GL is the best buy for the money, having been using the Hyper Eminent for few years before upgrade to the Signature Platinum. I can only say the SP is way better than the HE.
