When it comes to DCD filters, there is no best/second best or right/wrong. It's all about personal preference. From my experience, it's not even system dependent.
I've had quite a few people over around Axpona, and I did an experiment with the DCD by moving the router between ALT1 and ALT2...
There are 6 outputs on the DCD - 4 with filters and 2 without:
You will pick one of the available outputs. I would start with one of the outputs labeled as "Default". You will need a new cable for that too.
There are reasons why some people may want to stay away from adding a NAS. Some of them in no particular order:
1. Spinning drives generate noise. You may not want that noise in your listening room. But since it's recommended to have the NAS connected to the DCD, it will most likely need to be...
Congratulations Chris!
I like Cologne. My best friend from my teenage years lives there, and I have plenty of fun memories visiting Cologne. Hmm, why the taste of Kölsch beer comes to my mind when I think back about those fun times...
Looking forward to working with you as I just became a...
There is no problem with the stock cables at all. They function and sound pretty good.
But so do the stock Horizon tubes ;). We are audiophiles and like changing things.
As a Taiko dealer, I don't recommend changing the provided stock cables!
But as a vivid DIY-er and a hardcore audiophile -...
@RichardA - the current thinking is that Daiza works well with aluminum chassis but not with chassis with a lot of copper, such as the Taiko switch, router, DCD, and the Olympus server or I/O.
See this comment from Emile:
So these are 2 separate devices, right? One is Trinnov and the other one is Altitude? And both were connected to the Taiko WiFi and received 192.168.100.xxx IP addresses?
No, it's not 2 mm. It's more like 20 mm from what I am seeing...
I could not find the rack specs anywhere online. What I found was the specs of the component inside the rack on the photo. That component has a height of 62 mm (i.e. it's 2 mm higher than the Taiko switch / router). And there is...
I discovered something interesting this morning. Audiobyte makes a 3-tier mini rack for their products.
I can't find the rack specs and dimensions, but I found the dimensions of the products that you see on the rack.
They are: 290 x 300 x 62 mm / (11.42 x 11.81 x 2.44 inch)
Taiko...
Have you tried connecting from a laptop?
I can walk you through the process of changing the channels but you would need to connect to the router web configuration interface somehow.
There are two ways to connect to the router web configuration interface:
1. You can connect from a device...
Probably not very helpful for you but just as an FYI - I will be doing some private gatherings at my house in Chicago, hopefully around Axpona time if I receive my Olympus + Olympus I/O XDMI by then.
Planning to do some comparisons such as:
1. Taiko Extreme vs. Olympus XDMI vs. Olympus +...
You are in excellent hands in that case and should not need to worry about lifting things and making changes.
From the photos I have seen and what I have read, the real investment is in the main XDMI card (and BPS, BMS, QSFP transport interface, etc.). The AES/SPIDF board is most likely very...
Hey @marty - my suggestion is find a flexible dealer who would come to your house and install the Olympus and change things for you when you need them to change. Isn't that what dealers are for? No need for you to lift your 60K server, or open it, or change things inside if you are not...
I knew it was risky to start this thread and show photos. People will ask all kind of questions and it will become more and more obvious how crazy some of us are...
The short answers to your questions are very simple, actually - measurements (lots of measurements) and by ear, Realtraps...
The Olympus XDMI comes with 1xNIC, 1xUSB, and 1xXDMI card.
In your case, you may want to consider getting a custom built Olympus XDMI with 2xNICs and 1xXDMI card instead. You don't need the USB card with the Merging Nadac.
If you believe that the Merging Nadac will outperform the XDMI analog...
This is fun! I started a systems photos thread here:
https://www.whatsbestforum.com/threads/taiko-audio-systems-gallery.38000/
It's very interesting to look at systems photos.
SPDIF and AES/EBU were created to overcome the I2S limitations.
Then USB came in to digital audio to overcome the SPDIF and AES/EBU limitations.
Then I2S came back to overcome poorly implemented USB.
And then XDMI was born to take over...
:D
Just a random thought for the Lampizator Horizon fans. I have a lot of respect for Lukasz! I've never had the chance to hear a Horizon in my system, but my guess is that it has an extraordinary tube-based analog section people love. A match in heaven for tube rollers....
I am a tube-gear fan...
The problem is that with the current implementations of I2S as soon as you use a cable (longer than 2 inches let's say) it becomes worse than a well implemented USB. There is only one high-end I2S PCIe card currently on the market that I am aware of, manufactured by PinkFaun that is using an...
Plenty of benefits to be gained there.
1. You are keeping your cards cooler by moving them to a different chassis. You are also keeping the server cooler by removing the cards. Temperature is a big factor in the Extreme. I suspect that will still be a factor on the Olympus server.
2. A server...
Posted the below in the wrong Taiko thread, so here is it in the right place this time:
Speaking of bass, here is what I sent to Ed yesterday:
The first and the most obvious difference I heard (after installing NSM) was in the bass. Bass is so different (and so good) - it’s like switching from...
It has been a while since I've done that comparison, but cotton sounded darker than silk. The difference is not something to obsess about, though.
Teflon / air dialectic is not a bad way to go too but I prefer my DC cables slightly twisted.
