All New Yamaha NS 5000 Speakers..... World-Beaters ?

An interesting comment! I know NS1000's are not 5000's but, I have owned and used a pair of 1000M's since the early eighties. In 1987, I replaced a higher powered ss amp with a pair of 50 watt push pull monos (still use them with the 1000's to this day). Along the way, tried various other ss...

I feel that way about mine too. Funny how we become so attached to some items! :)

Mind helping me with comments on a NOS tube selection?

I couln't agree more, having also used these tubes in the past. For what it's worth, I have recently tried a full compliment of the same tubes (2 x phono stage, 2 x line stage) in my pre-amp - JJ ECC83S, Sylvania 12AX7 (nos), Raytheon 12AX7 (NOS), Brimar 6057 T (NOS), Mullard M8137 (NOS), I...

Still working my way through the thread. There are many pics of gorgeous looking K's to drool over, but feel this is possibly the most outstanding pic I have come across, so far, and hence worth a special mention. Simply stunning! A piece of art, like many of the other photos too. Much more...

I have always handled my cartridges with "kid gloves", even so it only takes a split second lapse of concentration to do considerable damage. Fortunately, I have managed to avoid any mishaps, until now, but time moves on, as do minds and eyesight. Mine are certainly more challenged than ever...

I have always believed Boron to be a metal, but after doing some research apprently it isn't really, although it does have some metal characteristics. A term I came across was "metaloid" (describes "metal like" qualities of only a few elements (7) in the periodic table) which apperently sit...

Wow, this along with other pics are a bit of a horror story! In the 40+ years I have been into this hobby, I am pleased to say that none of mine have ended up like this (can't say about the internals as I have never been inside one). As I have only ever used brushes, I will continue to do so as...

I have and use identical brushes, though I haven't trimmed mine. As the bristles are nicely splayed, I just use the edge of the brush and go down both sides. But, here's a question for you all..... I use a compressed air "Power Cleaner, Dust and Particle Remover" on telescope optics. The range...

It is simply a great performer. Mine has just been re-installed too. I think listening to other carts in between brings home just how satisfying the Black is when back in the system. Since mine was last in use, I have moved from Ortofon T5's to the Verto and also have a different pre-amp. In...

That's the one! A long time ago for me now. How time flies. If I knew then what I know now (I didn't install my Black until after 2000), I would defintely have bought more, and / or other variants too :) Apologies if this has been raised somewhere in the pages I haven't yet read, is there a...

Thank You! Well, I have started at the beginning, it's going to take a while to catch up on everything. The comment re your Friden visit brought a smile to my face. Not sure if you went to the same location I did those years earlier (Friden seem to have moved from Central (Golden House) to Jaffe...

Thanks Johan. I am actually a long time owner of my particular Black (some 30 years now). It hasn't been in use for all that time for various reasons, but it remains the most satisfying cartridge I have ever owned, despite it being the lower end of the range. As a result, I have never felt the...

I am not one for spending a huge amount of time on the internet, hence have just come across this thread (despite having posted elsewhere in connection with a Koetsu Black). Just want to give the thread (and you Phil) a thumbs up! - it looks like I have a bit of reading (catching up) to do :)

LP-12 owners: What's your favorite cartridge?

Thanks guys, all your comments are noted and appreciated. While it is important to make ones own decision based on experience, it is equally important to listen to others who have also made theirs based on their own. It doesn't follow that opinions will be the same (too many variables in systems...

LP-12 owners: What's your favorite cartridge?

That's not good to hear! I have only had two Linn cartridges, a K9 and the Klyde. Neither had issues, sounded ok, but neither excited me like some other carts I have owned. I was going to take a look at the Krystal, and may still do so. Lyra (the less expensive ones) are on the list too. ;)

LP-12 owners: What's your favorite cartridge?

Interesting! That's the direction I feel the OC9 tends to be, certainly compared to the Black. Maybe the ART9 would not be for me. Haven't come across an ML180 to date. It sounds interesting though. Danke! I agree, just because something is new it doesn't always make it better. Different in some...

How to ID true Koetsu Black made by Mr. Sugano, the father?

There is a lot of logic in your comments. I have known mine since new and it has had fair, but not excessive, use during this time. I still enjoy it immensly, but I am very much aware it will not last forever and am starting to consider what I am going to do when it is no longer so enjoyable...

How to ID true Koetsu Black made by Mr. Sugano, the father?

Sorry, no info on actual materials used. I guess there has to remain some mystery to the Koetsu magic :) The only other comment I could make on what I found is perahps the suggestion that after Musashino, production MAY have moved to Dynavector, not least because Koetsus were then marketed...

Sounds like another "oldy but goody". After a quick search, unfortunately no longer in production. Your description makes it potentially an appealing option to consider should a good used one cross my path. I attribute "fun" with the Koestu Black too :) Thank you!

How to ID true Koetsu Black made by Mr. Sugano, the father?

I hope this helps! Had a bit of spare time this am, went searching and found some interesting info on Blacks. I can't verify the accuracy, but it does at least seem to tie in with photos and details here quite well. I will leave it up to individuals to decide validity: It appears there were two...

"Nothing like an OC9", makes the ART9 still sound interesting - it could be different in a very good way for me. I'll keep it in mind, not sure if I will come across one though as they appear to be discontinued? (like my OC9 MLII). Will definitely include Hana in my "possibles" list. Thanks!

How to ID true Koetsu Black made by Mr. Sugano, the father?

It does indeed. The same series for sure, I'd say. It would be nice to understand the sequencing and the differences. If this particular version is a MkIII, there was presumably another version between this and the Musashino labelled carts pictured in the thread (unless there were two versions...

How to ID true Koetsu Black made by Mr. Sugano, the father?

Some photos of yet another iteration of the Black. I bought this one new in the early nineties, it seems to be between the earlier Musashino 80's version and the later Goldline. Still has the black underside of the 80's version, but with the bevelled edges of the later Goldline. Also noted, the...

Fortunately I can read German :) I would need to take a look at the Krystal it seems. Thanks for the reply. Still happy with my LP12 / Ittok too, after all these years. LP-12 owners: What's your favorite cartridge?

Yes, just like me, unfortunately. :) I seem to recall when the Lyra carts first hit the market. Not sure what year it was, but they caused quite a stir back then. I think one of the first went by the name of Lydian. Good to see the company is still around and going strong. Quite a price range...
