The trick to moving heavy speakers for micro-adjustment (particularly with "sticky" feet like Gaias) is to place a tea towel or similar under the speaker.
First tilt the speaker one way (onto 2 feet) and place the folded towel under the speaker, then tilt the other way so that 2 feet rest on...
I've found the solution to this problem and it's dead cheap and easy!
Ditch those fiddly knurled rings and replace them with 2 or 3 curved stainless washers like these -...
I wonder how many DSP users first asked themselves "Do I have the right TYPE of speaker for my room's features?" before resorting to DSP.
In my view, this is by far the most important decision and, if the right choice is made, may avoid the need for DSP. But there are other factors too and...
Weird isn't it - as far as I know, no brand ever uses video on their websites to demonstrate the quality of sound their equipment produces (despite their access to professional recording equipment, microphones, etc), yet there are people here who truly think their grotty mobile phones can record...
Surely a waste of effort if we have to listen to a Youtube video, recorded by a less-than-perfect microphone and we access it via our grotty PCs? Even if we have speakers better than Trios to play this video on, we are unlikely to appreciate how good (or bad) the Trios are.
That is one of the features of direction horns such as Avantgarde and the reason they have a small sweet spot and need very careful setting up. This can't be ideally achieved at Shows for the reasons I've already suggested, so the exhibitor has to compromise by setting up in such a way that all...
Thanks for that explanation - it corresponds very much with my experience with Duo XD speakers.
My tweeters are 35" above the floor and my ears height is about 38", but I have no concerns about this as it's best to keep the mid horn not far from ear level, so my 38" works well. Therefore I...
Come off it - the questioner hasn't heard the new Mezzo and neither have you. The thread is about Trios and someone asked if the new Mezzo was being shown at an audio show. That's it. There no benefit to anyone in saying once again that you hate any Avantgarde that isn't a Trio. Lots more...
We all know you don't like them, but haven't we heard your rants against non-Trio Avantgardes enough times?
The fact is that Duos are exceptionally popular (compared with Trios) because they cost very much less, can physically fit into many more homes and they sound almost as good when...
Certainly Nextel is nothing new to Avantgarde. Their bass cabinets were finished with Nextel from early days. The User Manual of my original Unos (bought new in 2002) says about cleaning:
"To clean Nextel coated surfaces of the subwoofer only use a sponge or foam! Dust can be carefully...
Easy - Benchmark AHB2, or Sugden Masterclass FPA-4, or Quad Platinum.
Why - are you looking for one?
I bought or borrowed these amps amongst many more when I decided to move from SETs for my AGs. These 3 stood out as "dull", to the extent the temptation was to turn down the volume rather than...
If anyone finds Avantgarde speakers "bright" or "aggressive" (which they are not), they could "dull" this brightness by feeding it with a "dull" amplifier.
However, this would rather defeat the characteristic of Avantgarde speakers - to deliver as "exciting" a listen as if at the live...
Many years ago I took my Avantgarde speakers to a UK hi-fi show to help an amplifier brand to demonstrate his tube amps.
For such a show where listeners will be sitting in a large number of not-ideal seats we (Holger Fromme from the nearby AG room visited to help set them up) used much less...
I'm pleased you enjoyed your day with the Trios. I'm sure they sounded great. Thanks for the review.
My take on your first paragraph is that horns, far more so than any other type, are very tolerant of placement regarding the wall behind them and to a lesser extent walls beside them. The...
Well, despite Musiklab's detailed and convoluted reply, I had to re-sell my Gamut D200 Mk III after a few months. The amp was outstanding sound-wise but its behaviour on start up and shut down with my very high sensitivity speakers rendered it unsuitable.
Are your concerns related to this...
I've replied to you posting on "another forum" so won't repeat here.
Only to add that changing speakers will make a massive difference to the rendition of music, whereas changing amp makes a much smaller, more subtle difference, This means that if you are not changing your speakers, you should...
That may be true but the reverse "If they sound good, they must measure good" is not necessarily so and neither is "If they measure good, they must sound good"
If the only measure of a good amp is its measurements, the designer has little more than a robotic job to reach the goal of a perfect...
Not sure! I bought an amp from a brand more associated with pro audio, so it measures very well - but turned out drearily dull. Give me an amp with a bit of character any day.
Yes, I agree totally there. Variations in speakers has by far the largest influence on what you hear. However if you choose one type of speaker, the matching ideal amp may be far different from the ideal matching amp for a different type of speaker. Even once a particular speaker is chosen...
Measurements are only a guide to an exciting rendition of music that will closely resemble the experience of the live performance.
Do conductors use measurements to judge the performance of their orchestra? No of course they don't!
Do orchestras sound the same when they play in different...
Interesting amplifier but not one I've encountered. What sort of price is a pair?
Pity there's no balanced in. What Class D technology is used? With the quoted output, perhaps Purifi Eigentakt - just about the best available. I wonder how it would compare with Atma-Sphere's Class D mono amps...
Has this album been mentioned yet?
The first track of the Carnival of Venice never fails to astonish me with the number of very different sounds that can be made from a small wooden box with just 4 strings and a bundle of horse hairs!
No analogue in my system, so no ADC to mess things up!
By "no bypass" I'm referring to full-range amps that include a DSP intended to correct for room anomalies. They can't do this of course - all they can do is mess the nice flat response the amp is designed so carefully to deliver! However...
Absolutely - agree 100%, though perhaps your last sentence could read "If the room is as ideal as possible and speakers carefully chosen and set up, then DSP shouldn't be necessary".
I'm sure that's true, but my reluctance to use DSP room correction, even for small adjustments as you suggest, is because (with a full-range amp system), the ENTIRE frequency range has to pass the DSP - there is no "bypass for higher frequencies" - and it's a signal processor that I don't want...
Thanks. In fact I do have a UMIC-1 calibrated mic and REW and have done some test measurements, though I'm no expert at interpreting the results. I've also used this calibrated mic and the generic mics supplied with amps that feature Dirac Live, RoomPerfect and MARS, where an "auto adjust"...
Did you see the long video of Jim setting up Mike's system (of Sun Coast Audio) in his own home? He set up Mike's Avantgarde Mezzo XD speakers (very similar to my own Duo XDs) and I'm 99% sure there were no subs involved apart from the bass enclosures that are part of the AG system. I'm also...
To tell you the truth, I read posts and reply to them if I think I have something to say that either agrees with or challenges what I read, or may be of use to the poster. Often I seriously consider what people say and may well take up constructive suggestions with my own system. Indeed, I...
I think your need for subs is for different reasons. I believe you use panel speakers that deliver less than full bass and you need to supplement the main speakers with a sub or two to achieve a full-range sound.
This inevitably adds to the difficulty of setting up speakers for ideal sound...
