Well that depends on your goal in this hobby. My goal is fairly simple - find a way to enjoy the music in my listening space - end of story. That's about as subjective as it gets. Over the years I have tried many approaches to this and for the last 15 years or so I have settled on my current...
What do you know, you listen to Quads! :) Seriously though John has probably listened to more of EMIA's pieces that just about anyone outside the company.
See you next week. Assume you going to be at the show. I will be in town Thursday.

Yeah, I've made that drive a few times. My sister went to UW and married a guy from Appleton. My kids spent a lot of summers there enjoying lake country.
Thinking about AXPONA, you going?

They rarely have demo equipment available as it's mostly built to order. Server upgraditis can be costly. I stay out of that game as well as the R2R. If I want to listen, well that's what friends are for.
If my math is correct that about 1000K miles. Easy trip, driving 3K over the next several...
I've heard rumors! Will be seeing Dave at the Southwest Audiofest next weekend. WIll asked if it's anything but paper. People have to stop ordering transformers etc from him as he's been crazy busy winding and can't get much else done.
Well I've know Dave and Jeffrey for a long time now. Was lucky enough to be around when they were coming out with the first commercial version. Heard that and should have pounced for a fraction of the current retail but I was an under paid public servant who was just starting a family and...
Have you tried the lower powered tubes in your system? Not sure what the impedance curve for your speaker looks like but I lived with my 50s driving Tannoys for years. their rated sensitivity was 95 but I always assumed it was a bit lower. My 50s drove those as loud as I wanted and I have what...
While I agree with the idea, in principal I found it not quite to my taste. Some time back I stacked my system with as much silver as I could. Essentially I have silver autoformers, a loaner amp with silver wound transformers and silver ICs and speaker cables and silver SUT. I can't say it was...
I have a variety of combos of Dave and Jeffrey's work here. I have both silver and copper VC and I have a copper step-up and a silver mono step-up.
My preferences fall in the the "it depends" category. My general view is that I can have "too much" silver in my system depending on where it is...
I do not. Would assume it is similar as the same number of amps and a crossover are are required. You might be able to eliminate the amps in the analog version if you have your own crossover. I think the DSP/crossover was built inside the amps in the original version.
I have heard these speakers at Munich for the last few years and also at a person's home in Germany. The short answer is that I love these speakers and would like to purchase a pair in the near future when finances allow.
Even when the digital DSP was the only option I found these speakers to...
Well it sounds like you have a plan of attack and are aware of the playing field. Two friends who love to tinker around recommended the Denon 3000 as a platform to modify, when I was asking for another friend. My tinkering days are over on both audio and cars as the electronics stump me...
Answering the question = No. Just too many compromises in the stock TT.
Now in your post you talk about modifications. Two ways to go; 1. Buy products form 3rd party sources that improve performance, which in my experience works about 60% of the time and 2. Basically rebuild the TT yourself...
How about this system;
Klipsch Heresy IV
Technics SU-G700M2
Technics SL-1200GR
Ortofon 2M Black
These's plenty of headroom for the cables he would need. Pretty much a one time set up with the cartridge, then he can replace the sylus when he wears it out. If that's too intimidating tell him I'd...
Peter,
I am not a lawyer but have dealt with this from the creator side and the following is my take based on my experience:
TOS just applies to "content" not your own photos. If you take a photo or create any original content there's two levels of copyright, registered and unregistered. The...
As OP stated I believe recording techniques and other technical specs other than thickness would have a greater influence on sound. One area that I think is promising is clear vinyl. Does eliminating that component actually reduce magnetic properties etc?

Was sent the link to this project today. Interesting construction and execution. Probably sounds really good but a well-executed 301 also has some je ne sais quoi. I have heard 301s totall rebuilt from brass and copper, redone with carbon fiber in many place. They all sound like a "better" 301...
One more tidbit about CAF. Think it was the Matterhorn Audio room with the big Kroma loudspeakers. Need to mention them using a "bad" room feature to their benefit. Somewhere up in the ceiling of their huge room there must have been a loose panel as there was an obvious rattle. The presenter...
Bob,
Thanks. I too watch and wonder what causes such vitriolic disagreement in a space where joy should be the norm. I readily admit my preference for horns/SET /analogue, but I can still sit in front of the technological tour de force of a system like Elliot provided and admit that it's damn...
Elliot,
Understood. Generally over the years I have found that the sound at shows correlates fairly well with the sound of the equipment in a well set up room/system. Given that most shows provide equally "challenging" environments the sound isn't perfect but does contain the DNA of the brands...
Elliot,
I was in the room for much more than the Tool cut. The rest of the time the sound was similarly excellent. I mentioned the Tool cut as impressed me almost as much as it did when I heard the LP on the WE system at Munich. Given my admitted bias towards horns is saying a lot.
Beau
Unfortunately I was only there for Friday and a brief time Saturday morning. After having not been to CAF since the date switch I spent most of my time catching up with friends in their rooms and not really listening too closely. Missed many of the rooms but I will say that the quality of the...
Look at the way the Munich Show does it. They have separate pages for Exhibitors and Brands. To make it better you could have a way to sort by room and look at the intersection.
Beau
Well, the Miyajima is a great match. A bit above your budget but you could get in touch with EMIA and they can make a custom one specific for the Saboten. If you want a great bang for the buck check out Lounge Audio.
Good luck
Beau
There’s always a “need” to get better. Sounding records/gear. I am sure if Technics could sell 10K they’d think about it as they have the brain power and the technical chops to do it. There’s really not a an economic upside for a large company to do this work.
Given what’s gone into the...
