My only caveat to your (very rational) approach, is the Summits' panels drop out at (I think) around 200 or 250Hz. So do your bass panels go up that high? I guess so? And do you only have a single rotary subwoofer? Where is it placed?
Thanks.
Really?!
The Neolith, with the largest panel ML has made to date -- really? 22" x 48"? I have a pretty good eye, so decided to measure my CLS panel. OK, so it's an inch shy in both directions: 21" x 47". I'd say that's negligible.
Now about those woofer sections. What I've discovered...
My (I admit, somewhat jaundiced) view of the 'new" Transfiguration Proteus:
I looked at the mechanical drawing of the Proteus on the Profundo website, and the magnetic layout of this supposedly "new" cartridge is actually of the pre-Temper design! The Tempers and Orpheus used an...
I hope that wasn't meant sarcastically ;--) All I know is that in all the discussions I've ever heard/read about this issue, either the speakers were pointed straight ahead, or angled somewhat (IN) toward the listener or listening position. Toe OUT, which is a term I never heard until now...
I do think you need to slow down and read others' posts more carefully -- and with an open mind -- instead of preparing for a fight, which was certainly not on my agenda. Sorry.
Neil
Hi mep, the room was actually 15'W x 24'L. Most of the tile floor was covered with a thick pile Karastan wool area rug (which you can barely see at the bottom of the picture.) In addition, you don't see the acoustic blankets that covered the entire back wall (behind the equipment) and the side...
. . . . the road not traveled
Hi Sparky,
No, no! We are both right! I've been down all those exact same roads you've traveled; I had the very same results/experiences as you have; and I was quite happy with my achievements, and proud of them as you have every right to be. So I'm not...
mystery pic
Sparky,
I don't know where you got that picture, but it's of the second (SW-800 subwoofer) version of my original 1991 CLS IIz system. Before that, I had a pair of Wilson Puppies for my subs, driven by a Mark Levinson 23.5 amp (waaay better than the 23!) through a Bryston 10B...
New panels: performance update
Hey everyone;
I see it's been 2 months since my original post, so I think enough time has passed to provide a fair assessment of the new panels' performance (over the old ones.)
As I indicated earlier, I wasn't expecting earth-shattering...
I would like to sell my extra pair of ML CLS IIz panels. These are the panels only -- no wood frame or electronics. They're used, but are in perfect condition, both cosmetically and operationally. Great for a DIY project, to keep as spares, or to update the panels of an earlier model...
Hi Don, and thanks for your comments. My remark about reserving judgement on the break-in issue was not meant to suggest I thought there might be no sonic improvements after a period of use. Only that 100 hours might be a bit much -- considering their level of performance right out of the...
CLS IIz upgrade -- done!
(Reply to another CLS IIz owner who upgraded his panels about a year ago.)
Hi Rick,
Let's see. OK, I got the first panel swapped on Saturday and the first thing I did was to A--B it with the remaining old panel. Frankly, I wasn't hearing much difference between...
Thanks, but 'no thanks'!
Are you suggesting the Summit X employs a DSP-based crossover? A careful reading of the details for all of MartinLogan's Reserve ESL and ESL series speakers indicates that only the Ethos employs such a DSP-based crossover. All other ML speakers have passive/analog...
Dana says to figure ~100 hours for break-in. He says they'll be bright at first, which will turn into even better high end extension and even more detail after break-in (italics mine )
As for pulling the trigger -- I wrestled with that one too, but decided to do it now based on...
I just ordered a set of new panels for my CLS IIz's, which incorporate the latest diaphragm improvements (mylar and coating), high(er) current hookup wire, and "Clear-Spar" section dividers.
My current panels are 17 years old. They sound great and look perfect. Yet Dana Brown at ML told me to...
Guide to Vinyl . . . . ?? (Do you want to go to New York, or by bus?)
Perhaps "A Buyer's Guide to TAS Advertisers' Vinyl Playback Products" would have been a more 'up front' title.
I switched from Kool-Aid to Screwdrivers 55 years ago (at my Bar Mitzvah :--) so I should have...
None of the above! Et tu Myles?
Myles, can I suggest you re-title this thread because it's about cataloging and/or arranging a record collection, a very interesting topic. But it's definitely not about record storage, something that's been discussed ad nauseam anyway! I voted 'Good Memory'...
Greg, I'm not sure what anyone ever meant by "speed" (in connection with loudspeakers -- it's not a race after all!), but excellent "transient response" (the ability of a driver to accurately turn an electrical audio signal into an identical mechanical motion) is very important at all...
Caesar, by 'geriatric' I wasn't referring to the sound ;-)) Just the age of the technology. The big Soundlabs are still the only full-range electrostat on the market. But geez, this is the 21st century and their basic design/technology is OLD, and the full-range models are still HUGE.
I don't...
A multi-reply
to MiTT:
That's it!! A vision realized, hands down, the best description I ever read to explain the undying attachment to this loudspeaker! It just never gets old does it . . . . . . . .
to RUR: "No thank you" to digitizing ANY of the signal I put into my speaker without my...
Have you heard the CLX (tube driven of course :)) I haven't; just asking. Like you, I'd have to take a VERY deep breath before replacing my CLS's!
As for the Heil Air Motion Transducer camp of drivers (an excellent design which when properly implemented can certainly give ribbons a run for...
Myles: One definition of vintage would be ME! (More than a decade older than YOU!) But I think that goes more to ANTIQUE!! I nevertheless seem to attract people in their thirties (+/_) and adjusting for their age-related ignorance, find them fascinating as well. I've introduced a few to...
It's an honest question, your metaphor notwithstanding. Or are you saying we should look to adolescent behavior to provide direction? That doesn't seem very helpful
Leaving aside "vintage" computers, there doesn't seem to actually be a classification for "vintage electronics"...
Is there a date prior to which consumer audio (and video?) electronics (or any audio/video electronics) are considered vintage -- by a qualified institution like the Smithsonian or some other authority such as one of the electronic institutes, museum associations, auction houses, etc?
Or is...
Not to interrupt the Krell discussion, but I have no idea why some "elaborate tax scheme" was necessary to remove Mark. The important point is that Mark's departure took place when his original money people wanted out, and Madrigal Audio Labroratory was the buyer. Madrigal didn't want Mark (the...
Levinson was not 'bought out' by Harmon International! It was sold out from under Mark, including his name!, by a bunch of disenchanted investors, to Madrigal Audio Labs. Madrigal however, produced EXCELLENT quality products under the ML name, even better designs (with Tom Colangelo) and...
I think a more interesting question/poll (which has been asked before of course) is which MoFi releases were crap! And not only crap, but worse than the original commercial realeases.
