Introducing Olympus & Olympus I/O - A new perspective on modern music playback

where does extreme + i/o fit into this with regard to xdms? does the i/o hardware also solve the gapless/track manipulation "issues"?

Introducing Olympus & Olympus I/O - A new perspective on modern music playback

from the dbpoweramp users forum, a response from the moderator: "If you can convert the file with dBpoweramp to WAV, then any program using the standard flac libraries (which is pretty much every audio program, except ffmpeg) will be able read the file." this implies to me that ffmpeg is using...

Introducing Olympus & Olympus I/O - A new perspective on modern music playback

i have no idea how flac does it, i just found that wav, by design, puts the lsb, then padding, then msb--so it needs to be reconstructed to create a single sample. but i'm much more intrigued by why two WAV files would be different. if you're interested, here are the detailed media info files.

Introducing Olympus & Olympus I/O - A new perspective on modern music playback

and just to be clear, there is no right or wrong answer here. if some hear a big difference and others don't, that is still part of a big clue and we don't know where that will lead since we don't don't know the exact mechanism at play here

no, the opposite. somehow ffmpeg is worse sounding, even when done batch offline

Introducing Olympus & Olympus I/O - A new perspective on modern music playback

thanks! i've got additional files at the link back a page or so. now there are flac, wav-db and wav-ff to compare. can you tell us what dac you use and what your dac settings are in xdms? also, which version of xdms are you using?

Introducing Olympus & Olympus I/O - A new perspective on modern music playback

good question. personally, i don't think the SQ is embedded in the files but something is 'different' in the WAV file structures. i think there are interactions with other processing functions which could differ from system to system (e.g. usb buffer size). bits really are...

Introducing Olympus & Olympus I/O - A new perspective on modern music playback

to avoid clogging up this thread, anyone who wants to contribute should: 1. download tracks in 'temp' folder, put on your extreme local drive, scan, then queue the 'temp' folder into the xdms player. 2. please report your results (flac, wav-db and wav-ff) to me via DM and i'll collate the...

Introducing Olympus & Olympus I/O - A new perspective on modern music playback

dave i think you do get the exact bits back, but i can hypothesize that if the bits are packed differently they might be processed and sent on in a different format (possibly)............just winging it here but what if data is split into packets differently? one thing i learned is that the...

consensus? here?????? let me summarize a bit (even though this is the olympus/wrong thread, right?). ed was kind enough to drop by on monday to meet, talk deep audio techno geek, and listen to my system. this is the music we played...

thanks for that info. no, i did not know that, and that opens a possible option for me. is roon gapless on playback?

Introducing Olympus & Olympus I/O - A new perspective on modern music playback

you say potato, i say............. i feel the same way, but about roon, which i personally find unusable (i prefer folder browsing). i am quite happy with XDMS and only gapless is a critical missing feature for me (and that is coming soon to alpha-land). if xdmi only works with roon, i'm...

    Taiko Audio Extreme Music Server

maybe i'm the only one confused, but it seems the discussion here is verging towards the olympus and not the extreme. this is making recommendations, such as roon vs. xdms and local vs. nas, very confusing since they differ for the olympus and the extreme. can i suggest that someone clean up...

    Taiko Audio Extreme Music Server

sounds good. maybe you could test the NAS+extreme as currently configured and with the extreme memory card(s) removed, which should dramatically lower the current draw?

    Taiko Audio Extreme Music Server

but only if usb noise doesn't dominate (see christian's response). but also good question: @taiko: would an NAS on the router sound better than internal memory? would removing internal hard drives plus NAS on router sound better?

[non-taiko content warning] please post a link here to those japan photos when you get back. i lived in japan for 5 years and have been back on business trips a number of times, as well as with my youngest as her graduation present from college (yeah, right, the trip was really for her...

    Taiko Audio Extreme Music Server

ok, someone has to do it. while all the activity is on the olympus thread, this weekend's posts raise a interesting question. if the u.3 memory (standard in the olympus) is so much less noisy than the memory we currently have in the extreme: 1. can we improve the sound quality (today) of the...

    Taiko Audio Extreme Music Server

i'd like advice on adding external HDD to the Extreme. i assume the best solution is to add internal storage. what is the best sounding solution if that is not an option? plugging an external hdd into one of the motherboard usb inputs? running a NAS nearby, mapping the drive and streaming from...

Introducing Olympus & Olympus I/O - A new perspective on modern music playback

wonderful news, and important for my audio budget planning. while i will follow the olympus and xdmi rollout diligently, the price of the olympus is just not in my comfort range (yes, that sounds a little strange for someone with an extreme, switch and router!) so further evolution of the...

thanks for posting this. i'm also looking for a 2nd small rack setup. however, if i use your numbers, there is only 2mm of vertical space here, so maybe there would be an air flow issue?

Introducing Olympus & Olympus I/O - A new perspective on modern music playback

Love it! If my stage width increases 300%, that will extend past the front wall of my house. Will I then hear people on the sidewalk appearing within my soundstage, or is the increased width only unidirectional? Will I be able to hear my music outside on the sidewalk if the soundstage reaches...

And may I add, port forwarding works perfectly here, though I do have to turn NordVPN off temporarily on my home network PC.
