This does not solve the prblem of the amps.... the caps are too high and the rectifiers failed, even the CV371. I owned such an amp and I know what I'm writing of. Lokk at the tube data sheets of the rectifiers and than compare the max. cap value in cap-input mode (firrst cap directly at the...
The biggest mistake in the Cary amps is that the first capacitor direct after the rectifier tube is too high - especially when using a 274a rectiver. It should be lowered to my opinion.
The ECC99 is an exceptional tube and I'd recommend to use it (very low plate resistance)... EMT is not any "garage" manufacture and has a reputation paired with deep know how. The advantage of variable adjustment of the cutting curves is, imho, the heart of listening to vinyl and a journey...
David, you're loosing 6dB in power when using a single 2A3 instead of PSE. I think you'll not be happier with a "50" instead of the 2A3 and you should try out some NOS 2A3 before swapping the amp.
The PHY-drivers don't go so much deep in the low frequency range but your brain needs only the...
Thx for your reply, I have no experience with your cables you mention so it's not easy to give a recommendation. But I think the best is to try it out and listen (take some time for this)... and maybe you don't like both cables. Important is first the set-up of your XO and then look to the...
yes, and it's a continous work because we are learning with our experience.... still in progress because I will see how it works as 3-way (currently I use the Mid & High on the same amplifier - high with -6dB as well), other point is a line-level with constant impedance and a true active-xo.
My xo-frequncies makes no sence for your system.... important is to know how it works, or better how to find the correct xo-frequency.
You have to measure your drivers / horns without a xo by using pink noise! Then look at the curves (slope etc.), store the curve (mid-high for example) as...
No problem....
for the Mid-High is use a simple 6dB high-pass and calculated the cap by using the input impedance from the amplifier
for the bass it's a 6dB low pass, calculated that the resistor is very low that I have less decrease of the signal
both corner frequencies are layed at -6dB for...
320Hz xo-frequency is ok for Solid State amp in the bass and a SE-amp for the MID-Highs. In my system I cross at 250Hz with a line-level XO, several SE-amps (low power 0.25 to 3W) for the MH-section (108dB/W/m) and currently an old Marantz amp (from 1974) with 20W for the Bass (99dB/W/m). This...
Hello Rob
thanks for the input, yes of course that's correct to measure that as well. My first attempt would be to measure the driver in the PWT and then waht you mentioned :)
When you modify the drivers then you have to measure them in the plane wave tube because it's another driver now and you should know how they're working after the modification (frequency, impedance etc.)
Thanks for the flowers...
Sorry, but I think my statement wasn't clear enough. Reading the datasheets mean that it is not a good idea rolling tubes in the same amplifier / dac by only changing the filament voltage. Everey tube owning it's specific operating points. When you change the tubes this...
The AD1 from EML are far away from the Original AD1 manufactured in the past, as well as the EMl / KR45 are... speaking for the old production types: the sound is different to the 45s, they can do 2 octaves with exceptional bass and a phantastic midrange (and the Telefunken are wellknown for the...
Hi Brad, from my opinion the horn's level is to loud and I'd recommend trying out another filter than LR - for example BW... anpther thing is to find the right slopes but you have to measure it first.
Good luck
Please let me make one correction:
Alesa Vaic and Dr. Kron began her partnership with Vaic Valve (based in North Italy & Prague. Then the rest of the story... EML (EmissionLabs) started as well with Alesa Vaic and then they went her own way, like KR Audio / KR Enterprise (Eunice Kron). But the...
well that is the lowest explanation I'll accept.... and yes, Tannoy needs power and like push-pull amps. My Eminence woofers I used before needed solid state amplifiers and the problem of them is that the frequency range goes very high (over 1KHz) - some people use to add another magnet and then...
When you are in the country pleas send me a not via PM. But please not articles and pictures on your blog - I'm a littles shy and like to act from "behind the scene"
