So because we like their products, it's ok for them to rip us off? I read nothing in the Nagra reply that justifies the ridiculous pricing. But, as the saying goes, value is whatever the market is willing to bear. Perfect illustration of the state of the high end.

There are many ways to achieve "synergy". Some audiophiles get on the component merry-go-round others research and buy good quality and tweak until it sounds great.
I subscribe to both Netflix and Amazon prime and was considering that I could cut the cord and use Hulu/hdtv antenna for current programming but it was a no go. I tried their 2 week free trial and watched mainly on the Roku. However, using the hdtv antenna was a real revelation compared to cable...
Tried Hulu but their interface/browsing sucked big time. I didn't see many of the advantages that he writes about. To me both Amazon and Netflix beat it on programming and ergonomics, especially if you own a dvr.
Cecile is a pretty good one to check out. Her debut album WomanChild is a must have. A few others I'd suggest, very much in that same sultry mode as Melody and Sophie, would be Jane Monheit, Laura Fygi, Marilyn Scott, Jeanie Bryson (Dizzy's daughter), Rachelle Ferrell, Kellye Gray (Standards in...
Jriver Gizmo on my phone streaming from my home server. Nice thing with Gizmo is you can set the quality of your stream at 64 or 128 or 320 kbs or even cache your playlist. The reliability and sound quality via headset or through the car stereo was surprisingly good. Only other requirement is...
I suggest you reduce your budget to 25k and spend the difference for traveling expenses to audition your candidates in as many set-ups as possible. In no time you will come to the right conclusion.
I use a computer CAPS server and rip with either dbpoweramp or jriver which can do what you want. However, when I rip I will suspend all other activities on that machine just to ensure that my rip is pristine regardless of what logic might otherwise suggest. What you propose seems like a time...
We seem to be in the golden age of "disruptive" technology but let's see if time validates these trends in audio. Of course, many will jump ship to the dark side until the general consensus figure out what's missing and the counter trend kicks in. Even so, I suspect that all these new approaches...
Agree completely, and the reason I had posted earlier that op reconsider use of preamp or at least burrow a good one to try. The sonic deficiencies op mentioned are the same I encountered without a preamp even though my DAC was designed with inbuilt preamp functionality. I believe Ralph and...
Fascinating thread. I don't disagree with the general consensus that the room may be a factor. However, I saw that your system doesn't use a preamp. Because of the transparency and detail you gain it seems counter intuitive to muck things up with a preamp but what you lose without one may just...
