Thank you Larry! What a terrific article. Jung-A's playing does make me very happy. I am glad her sense of humor and virtuoso flair came across so directly in your listening room.
This was an especially fun and challenging recording to make. My fellow engineers Arian Jansen and Elliot...
Listening with Mike Lavigne and his audiophile friends
This sounds like a great upcoming gathering, Mike. Thanks for posting your recordings list. I am thrilled that you chose FOUR Yarlung albums for your session in June and I wanted to say thank you for including so much of our music. I...
Okay! That should do it. We'll see what Brian recommends when he is back in town in a few days. Thanks Amir and a happy rest of the weekend to you. Bob
Amir, what 256fs DSD DAC are you using when you play the Misha files? I see "Mark Levinson, Anthem D2 and Lexicon for DACs/Processors." in your profile for the digital end. Do you also have a DAC that can play 256?
Best wishes, Bob
Thanks for your questions, Amir. Brian Moura, who began this thread, is away at a conference right now but offered to do some listening again in a few days when he returns.
It is our hunch that something is possibly configured in a less-than-optimum way in your DAC settings.
The volume...
Janaki is a special recording, I agree, and it is doing well in its first vinyl release as well. Steve Hoffman still has people approaching him for signatures on that CD (and now LP). We recorded Janaki in Zipper Hall, which is a magical acoustic space. From memory, our microphone was about...
Thanks for your question. Most of our recordings, except for full orchestra where we use four microphones, are either one stereo or two mono microphones. For Janaki we used one AKG C-24, similar to Ted Ancona's mic we used for some of the Misha tracks. We used Ted's microphone with a...
Thank you kindly, Amir. I look forward to your thoughts. Hopefully this time the zip files will do their job without destroying the music they contain!
This album, Misha, is a lot of fun because of the nature of the music we recorded and because of the number of microphones we used...
Amir, thank you very much for bringing the pop problem to our attention. Tom in recording in Europe but he and Jared have already tackled the issue in the 256 files and are reloading them. It is terrific to work with such a responsive team, I can tell you. I do apologize for the initial...
Good morning Marslo. As with "all things DSD," the files themselves are on the large size. Fortunately, NativeDSD's Amazon server does a good job packaging files for us and delivering them with as few hitches as possible. I think Jonas Sacks is the architect behind this success. Kudos to...
Sam, great to see your post. I was away for two days, when this thread had three pages, and return today to see over 12 pages. It thrills me to know this many people are interested in the best DSD playback.
To answer your question, Sam, we will certainly continue to offer analog tape...
Dear "Spirit," I'm going to call you in London for a longer answer. More than I can type right now as we prepare for our Segerstrom Center recording session. There is something wonderful about physical media, I agree.
I love your spirit. Everyone seems to be rather excited about the Smoke & Mirrors album. Another, coming out on vinyl at the end of the month is Janaki String Trio (also a Bernie Grundman 45) and also on tape. Tracks from this title will also be available on all of the formats, and are...
Dear Amirm,
Tape per se does not eliminate the need for mastering and mixing when cutting a lacquer. If one were to cut an LP from a digital source, I guess the challenges would be similar to cutting as we do from the tape itself. Natural tape compression may help with this a little bit...
Greetings amirm. We have been fortunate to work with two vinyl mastering engineers who understand and support our rather old-fashioned and stubbornly purist approach at Yarlung. Doug Sax cut our first two lacquers and we have worked with Bernie Grundman on all the albums since. Because we...
Greetings Spirit of Music. What a great name. And your alias makes it easier to answer your question, or try to. First, a disclaimer. Our team at Yarlung Records is format agnostic. In my view one can make excellent recordings with the right components carefully used whether one is...
Greetings Microstrip. Arian designed and built a new recorder for Yarlung Records. It is called the ATR12, and it is a two component unit. The transport looks like the ATR10 you know, and there is an additional box that has the record circuitry in it. Beautiful units, both of them. The...
Mike, I appreciate your analysis and thoughts on the various media. We are indeed in a brave new world (lower case, yes) of options for high resolution audio. Analog has never been as good as it is right now, and neither has digital. I think the most interesting tests are those made between...
Brian, you have a Nadac? This is great. How does it sound? Is the sound significantly different in 256 from other superb DACs like the exaSound? I know it is considerably more expensive. Gary Koh himself makes a beautiful DAC, based on a different engineering philosophy, called the Genesis...
Congratulations!
Gary's report does indeed whet the appetite. But "part time audiophile" as you say in our byline? Gary, you are being too modest. You are an audiophile even in your sleep.
It will be wonderful indeed to hear Todd's tapes when they become available. Analog tape has been...
The beauties of 256fs (Quad DSD)
Isn't this a beauty! We're encouraged to see so many high end companies entering this market. There is certainly a serious contingent of music lovers ready for the next generation of high resolution dacs.
Brian Moura, thank you for pointing me to this...
Thanks Andre! Just for a reminder, all of our SonoruS Series tapes are 15 ips. We haven't made any at 7 1/2 and I am fairly certain the slower speed would not capture the range you like in the DSD (which comes of course from the tape at 15, CCIR)
Have a great weekend!
Bob
Thanks for your question Joe. Except in the case of Mahler's fifth symphony, our DSD releases are all the length of a reel of analog tape, from which they come. Our DSD releases come from the SonoruS series of tapes. So at 15 ips, this limits us to about 30 minutes per album. Fortunately...
Thanks Joe! If you are a DSD guy, we have a new quartet of DSD albums coming out tomorrow (Friday, January 9th) at https://yarlungrecords.nativedsd.com/
This is an interesting experiment... we are releasing an album in DSD which has not been released in any other format yet. It is Simpler...
Amir, thanks so much for your note and for your question. Most of our albums are available in high resolution PCM on HD Tracks, and here is the link: http://www.hdtracks.com/music/label/view/id/222/
The fidelity, per se, is similar on all of our albums because we tend to use the same...
Thanks so much Andre. I have been using the exaSound e22, which is mid price but high quality for sound. I enjoy using this DAC, in addition to the fact that George Klissarov underwrote our first four albums, including the one with Smoke & Mirrors to which you lavishly refer, so I am doubly...
Steve and Andre, thanks so much for your generous and warm introduction. It is great to be a part of your forum. So far these DSD releases have gone very well. NativeDSD.com is the company we are partnering with to make these high resolution albums available. Jared has done a terrific job...
