If tape is so good why does it record so poorly?

Wow, did you guys feel better getting that off your chest? Decks vary enormously, but whatever. The experts have spoken.

If tape is so good why does it record so poorly?

This was mostly an exercise in 'what if' for tape nerds. Actually, using the new Fox tape (same as the new Pyrol reel tape, same company) a cassette sounds extremely low noise without any dolby noise reduction.

New Analog Audio Design Reel-To-Reel Tape Playback Deck In Production

Hat's off to anyone with the skill and dedication to do this! Modern computer electronics greatly simplifies the transport control but the mechanical design and manufacturing to make a quality transport still needs to be first rate for a reel to reel.

If tape is so good why does it record so poorly?

I have a rebuilt Nak 700ZXL and a 482. Both have been cleaned and at least partially recapped. I've purchased 2 boxes of the new Fox cassettes and tried them out on the 700zxl, and the sound is pretty incredible, easily as good as most consumer reel to reel machines. I've wondered what a Nak...

If tape is so good why does it record so poorly?

I've bought tapes from Acoustic Sounds, Ed Pong and Tape Project. Ed uses A80, I think Tape Project used ATR102 and I'm not sure what Acoustic Sounds uses.

If tape is so good why does it record so poorly?

I suppose you're right. I had forgotten about the need for ready parts replacement, as with the A80.

If tape is so good why does it record so poorly?

Yes, I've never heard of the desire to use different tape decks on purpose for duplicating. By the way, I'm surprised any modern music company can even find a number of A80's or ATR102's any more. You would think they are in high demand and becoming unobtanium. It would be interesting to see...

New member and new Tascam 44OB owner

A company in France has picked up the tape manufacturing brand BASF. Here is a link: https://www.recordingthemasters.com I own a lot of this tape and its the best I've ever heard. I also own their Fox C90 cassette tapes and they are also amazing. If you buy this tape you should get your deck...

Reality is Cruel : Cybershaft new Ultimate OCXO 10M Clocks Shootout OP20 vs OP17

Thanks for responding. You would think that 75 ohm would be the correct impedance for audio equipment. 50 ohm is the standard for cabling in electronic test equipment. I just remembered that there is a minimum voltage for clocks. Below that voltage they don't function at all. Perhaps that...

Reality is Cruel : Cybershaft new Ultimate OCXO 10M Clocks Shootout OP20 vs OP17

I wonder if the GPSDO would have sounded better with a better power supply? I would very much like to know what the 'high' setting actually means in the circuit. Is there any way to find out?

What turntables do you use? Pictures would be nice as well :-)

Wow, you got your copper behemoth finished! It looks very impressive. What tonearms/cartridges are you using?

Joseph Grado, Inventor, businessman and friend.. some memories

That's a pretty unusual collection of audio gear, the Nagra digital tape deck is a surprise. You would think there be a stack of analog gear, not a turntable in site!

    Modding my ARC Ref Anniversary

You make a very important point, in that modding like this is a scattershot approach. The thing to remember is that you are fundamentally changing the sound of an expensive component. I've never had a bad experience doing this, but I suppose someone might have liked the original sterile cold...

Great to hear that! It makes you wonder about the cost of constantly buying newer equipment.

    Modding my ARC Ref Anniversary

That's about what I thought you'd say, there always seems to be a lower noise floor with a more 'musical' sound. You'll find that there is more detail and space around the instruments and voices as well as more defined bass after the caps are finished burning in. I've never regretted doing...

Amazing live stream concert by Alena Baeva & Vadym Kholodenko

Alena and Vadym are an amazing pair! They are just coming into their prime, I can't wait to hear more from them.

Miles Davis Kind of Blue meets Analogue Productions' UHQR

I cleaned mine before playing it, so maybe that helped. I also have a safety copy / copy (3rd gen) of KOB and comparing the UHQR LP to the tape its pretty close. I would say the UHQR LP has more presence, more ambience of the recording venue. The bass on the tape which has an IEC eq isn't as...

Miles Davis Kind of Blue meets Analogue Productions' UHQR

I received my copy a week ago and finally had a chance to listen to it. I find it hard to believe this is an LP, the sound is amazing. There is so much more open space, deeper and accurate bass, and a bigger sound stage than other copies of KOB I've heard. I think this UHQR release is an...

    Orotofon MC Anna Diamond cartridge

Yes, dynamics plus detail are incredible. The only thing I've found with the T3000 is that it is not shielded and needs to be kept away from other equipment and power cords at least 6". It's an older silver wire transformer made in Japan and very nice. If I get another SUT I'd probably go for...

I purchased an Ortofon T3000 SUT for my A95, I think it's a great match.

Miles Davis Kind of Blue meets Analogue Productions' UHQR

Yes, I've been waiting to hear about my order as well. That's discouraging about issues with the first pressings, did someone from analog productions tell you that or is it hearsay?

    Actual number of tapes??

Thanks for the corrected count. I must be behind then, I'll have to update my library. Approximately twenty tapes behind, sheesh!

    Actual number of tapes??

I'm not sure if Ed has quite that many tapes available. I must have around 60 of them.

    Mahler 8 Alternatives

I don't remember hearing distortion on my copy of Reiner/Mahler 4th but I will listen again. Perhaps the OP should listen to a few titles from Opera. Mahler was blending symphonic and operatic forms together.

    Mahler 8 Alternatives

I've learned to love Mahler, I start playing his symphonies frequently over the last two years. I just recently played the Reiner/Chicago Symphony Mahler 4th symphony LP from Acoustic Sounds: Fritz Reiner-Mahler Symphony No 4 Lisa Della Casa-200 Gram Vinyl Record|Acoustic Sounds Oh boy, that's...

Miles Davis Kind of Blue meets Analogue Productions' UHQR

Yes, it looks sold out now. Apparently Michael Fremer has heard it and says it is the best version of KOB ever released: The Best Ever Kind of Blue? | Analog Planet I can't wait to get it!

    Modding my ARC Ref Anniversary

I would not recommend burning in by leaving it in your system, this could take several years. By burning it in on the bench you can be done in two weeks, and believe me the difference after the burn in period is a complete is a revelation. If you try to listen to new electrolytic caps without...
