    Are We the Last Generation?

I have a team of 20 young bankers under my command, with an average age of c.30 years. They are certainly fairly well-paid by all means and have enough discretionary income to afford a few indulgencies. Still, it is just 1 guy among them who is really interested in music and private listening...

The Cat’s Grin - a thread I’d have expected to be started by Ron ;-)

In a way, all of the three (four) groups remind of an old joke about a bunch of blind men who try to apprehend the shape of an elephant by touching different parts of its body - leg, tail, husk etc. That is not a way to reach a holistic apprehension of the best technique (and technology) in...

    SETs and Horns

Sorry for re-posting the video from another thread, but it works well as an illustrative example of this combo. Here a Border Patrol 300B SET with 8W Takatsukis drives the 4-channel horn towers while plate AB amplifiers drive the 2X16 inch TAD bass horns. 300Bs works from 100 Hz upwards so do...

    KeithR's "Dream Speaker" Search

I have the Aida’s (first generation)in my city apartment in a fairly small room (listening distance is c.3 meters). They are excellent speakers - tender, soulful, expressive, extremely vocal, unbelievably natural and coherent even at low listening volumes. For the EUR/USD 50k at which they...

    Zero Distortion: Tango Time

If you like a bit of avant-garde/modern jazz, and not only the “Old Masters”, I highly recommend David Murray recordings on Soul Note/Black Saint label: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Murray_(saxophonist)

    Zero Distortion: Tango Time

I have an Esoteric K1 + Esoteric atomic clock in the Gamma system. K1 upconverts everything to DSD, DSD DF off, and the clock is set to 10 MHz. I use physical media only - CDs and SACDs. There might be a point in time when I introduce a network renderer into the system to use the high-res...

    Zero Distortion: Tango Time

I have not pursued that objective as it clearly depends on music material. You do not really want to lose the impact/punch of 4x16 inch TAD bass speakers in a horn too early if you like a bit of rock-n-roll in your house))

Hi, Bonzo! The nice thing about Ralph’s horns and the bass amplifiers is that you are free to adjust crossover point, filter slope, phase and level in a fairly wide range. As I listen to a wide variety of music, including rock and electronic I have my crossover point set on the higher side -...

Sorry, just can not NOT share this... I need to find a way to connect YouTube to my Gamma ... The opening is Sviridov - a fairly unknown Russian composer - “Time! Push on!/Forward!” I highly recommend to get a nice recording - it is incredibly energizing

    Zero Distortion: Tango Time

It does indeed - there is surely a great common history and theme behind even the simplest of musical instruments. Here is a nice modern performance - I like that the young kids still keep the flame burning, even if with a modern twist: And, of course, the “Kalinka”:

Hi Tang! I have a fairly simple (actually, two - one in the city and the other in the countryside) vinyl rig, with a Brinkmann Oasis/Graham Phantom Supreme/Dynavector XV-1s as the main workhorse in the Gamma system, and a Kuzma/Kuzma 4-point/Lyra Etna in the city (SF Aida) system. As vinyl for...

    Zero Distortion: Tango Time

Thank you, Tang. Melodia had indeed made quite a few interesting recordings back in Soviet time. The Leningrad plant presses are also rather surprisingly good, though it is hard to find domestic LPs in good condition, as the playback technology, including styluses was rather crude back then...

Yes, the bass crossover setting is probably as much a question of personal preferences and favorite music material as is the question of room modes and phase/time issues.. I like my piano to be a little left-hand “heavy-handed”, or more “Denis Matsuev-The Russian Bear-like” ;) - watch this guy...

    Zero Distortion: Tango Time

Jeroen, hi! You have a really unique experience with setting up your Zeta system, in particular in light of an even lower cross-over point for your bass horns than either Tang or me have in our Gammas. Could you please share your story with regard to original sub horns placement and the way...

    Zero Distortion: Tango Time

That’s exactly what I am writing about. The wavelength at sub-basal frequencies is meters vs cantimeters for mid and millimeters at HF. Are we trying to match the peak of a 10 or a 3 meter wave with a peak of a millimeter HF wave?

    Zero Distortion: Tango Time

Not in my case. I am running separate L/R preamp outputs to L/R sub bass amplifiers. Ralph mentioned it is important to keep the “mouths” together for the bass waves to continue their way out of the horn smoothly and not break up - this might be - I am just speculating now! - the reason for...

How far away are the double basses from first violins? Does it matter if in a playback session they are moved another half-a-meter front or back?;)

    Zero Distortion: Tango Time

There is a concept of “locking-in” the room in subwoofer placement - but this concept means that you try to find a place where the subwoofer stops to excite any of the specific room modes - thus the bass response becomes generally even and thus “tight” and “punchy” But this has nothing to do...

    Zero Distortion: Tango Time

Theoretically (and no theory is perfect, aside from belief in God), how is time alignment of bass horns supposed to work? Let’s say they play from 30 Hz to 85 Hz in Tang’s case, then roll-off at 3rd order (acoustically). Mid-bass horn plays down to 125 Hz or so and then rolls-off pretty fast...
