I had a conversation with Jeff Polan @NextGen about a plug-in replacement upgraded Nagra IV-S repro circuit and its something that's on his backlog of projects. It's something we plan to revisit later this year. I'll let Jeff comment on more details about it, including potential limitations...
The ATR can handle 14" if the reel motors are mounted in the appropriate position. Otherwise, the limit is 10.5", but all ATRs can be converted without further modification and all have swappable deck plate inserts to support both motor-mount locations.
The A80RC does 14"? I thought it was...
In the US, we have another option for Nagra T Audio repair. Dan Labrie, former ATR Services lead tech founded Myriad Magnetic, based out of Philadelphia. ATR refurbishment is still his #1 priority, but he now works on most other professional tape machine brands as well. He has serviced or...
Yes, for the time being they are not selling the units. Hoping to see production resume late summer. I have a TD9 in for repair and conversion from 16mm to 1/4”.
I agree with @Foxbat that the ATR is my favorite machine. In addition to (IMO) the best stock sonics of any pro machine available, you cannot beat the flexibility of the platform - swap formats in under a minute, 4-speed capability, 14" reel handling, mono to 4-track capability, etc.
With the...
If anyone is looking for Trafoless cards, I've got a couple of recapped pairs left. The work was done by Roger Ginsley and they've all been tested and verified working. PM me.
I'd agree with the assessment that the ATR is punchier than the A820, though versus smooth, I'd characterize the Studer A810/12/20 sonics as slightly veiled and not quite as dynamic. Personal opinion, of course.
@Mike Lavigne - it's a shame you're shipping both A820s out since I'm pressing...
Larry , et al - I want to make sure people know that Dan Labrie, the former Lead Technician at ATR Service Corp, is now operating independently out of Philadelphia, PA as Myriad Magnetic and is rebuilding ATRs as he did when working for Bette during the previous decade. He has not stopped this...
hi Michael, did you ever find a solution to be able to bypass the pre-amp in your Classic INT? I'm looking at a Classic INT now that I would only consider buying if I could bypass the preamp when so desired.
I'm looking forward to comparing it with my other machines including the ATR, A820, T Audio, and MTR15, among others. I have a different experience with my Nagra T than you. After being fully serviced and calibrated, I think it's an excellent sounding machine. I've heard it described as...
Unfortunately, not as of yet. I resent my shipping information last week because Peter wanted to send it 'now,' but haven't received an update. It's time to check in :). As for first title, I'm not sure yet. Whatever moves me on that particular day (which could still be weeks away) :)
@andromedaaudio and @Audiophile Bill - thank you both. I'm excited to receive it. It might be the most expensive piece I own (though the Nagra T and A820s are rapidly catching up).
Jeff, we've talked about it, but I think it's worth mentioning that in the product backlog is development of NextGen repro cards for the A80VU mkII-IV as those machines get a bad rap for their playback electronics compared to the A80R/RC.
My room is currently being re-assembled from a recent move, but when I did listen, the mix was roughly
Tape 5%
Vinyl 20%
Digital 50%
Radio 25%
By far, I enjoy using my machines the most, but I have the least software in that format. Additionally, I'm typically passively listening while doing...
There are currently no plans in the works, but that's something that could be done, especially if there's demand for it (though I personally love the stock ATR electronics compared to my Studer decks). Jeff is local to me in Southeastern PA, so I can provide an ATR as a development platform for...
I would almost guarantee that the filter caps are what will be needed to resolve the issue. The A807 I most recently had recapped still did not play after every capacitor was replaced with the exception of the PS supply filter caps. Once the PS filter caps were replaced, it played again. You...
hi there, unfortunately, it's incredibly difficult to diagnose these machines remotely with limited information, but assume the machine will require some level of refurbishment to operate reliably. From the limited video you provided, the machine does appear pretty dirty, which is not a great...
hi Carlos,
The A807 as with other Studer machines, is one that typically requires a full recap, including the large power supply capacitors. My last A807 had the exact same issue where pressing Play engaged the pinch roller momentarily with no capstan motion and then disengaged after a few...
I'm sure your tech will be able to quickly resolve the problem. Unfortunately, while audio card spares are easy to find on eBay, the transport control cards are typically not. The only reliable source of those cards is Audiohouse in Switzerland. If anyone knows differently, I'd love to know.
hi Tango, I recently had this almost identical issue on one of my A820s. It would not play and at one point it started playing by itself without input from me. As Ki suggested, I checked the green row of LEDs and several were not illuminated. I pulled several control cards from my other...
@stellavox and his partner may be eyeing up designing upgraded A810/12/16/20 repro cards as they are doing for the A80R/RC right now. There are some complexities to doing so, but if they can get around them, we'll see much needed improvement on that front.
In fact, the opposite is the case. After Studer acquired Telefunken in the late 80s, the A816 was designed and built by Studer as their own successor to the M15. In fact, Studer commissioned his own research group to gather requirements for the successor and the A816 was developed from the...
