This is another strange one for the year - based on a true story back in the early 90s where a woman had a relationship with a 7th grader, and subsequently had his children in prison (!). Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore are the stars, and a few of their scenes side-by-side are terrific as...
We watched this on Netflix the other night and it had some laughs, a lot of famous people (and Craig and Monae are great), but a terrible script. The more you think about the movie the more preposterous it is. I don't want to spoil it for others, but let's just say the first hour is a waste of time.
Definitely the feel good movie of the year about the able hearing daughter in a deaf family. It’s a typical coming of age flick otherwise but is funny and touching at times.
expect a best picture and supporting actor nom
One of the biggest industry shifts over the past 20 years has been to more sophisticated (and expensive) integrateds. People clearly like having a single box that provides great sound with less cable and power cord expense. My first exposure to the segment was the vaunted JRDG Concentra II amp...
interesting perspective from Steve Guttenberg:
For me, the law of diminished returns sets in. I've heard numerous $500,000 systems and it's a rare thing to be extremely impressed. Also, the bigger the speaker oftentimes the bigger the problems.
I'd like to hear forum opinions/direct comparisons between these two, fairly iconic SS amplifier names. In particular Pass XA.8 series vs 625/725 for JRDG (not the digital-based amplifiers).
Thanks!
This movie is excellent - in some ways, a play inside of a movie which makes sense as the film's lead character, played by Adam Driver, is a theatrical director in NYC with Johansson his actress, soon to be ex-wife. The story is about divorce but different to me than than Kramer vs Kramer (which...
I've sent this around to a few local audiophiles, as to me it doesn't sound anything like a performance - a zillion mikes around an orchestra for hifi fireworks.

First, thanks to Fremer for posting this up as having AAA vinyls in one place is always useful - but it is yet another reminder why the industry is still focused on aging boomers now entering their 70s. And as a friend of mine just quipped most of these are, "reissued to death." If the people...
Great to see Kacey Musgraves win Album of the Year (and happens to be well recorded as well) - Dolly and Diana Ross were great. My favorite part of the evening was Alicia Keys dual piano performance - had no idea she was classically trained...
Some have said the sign of a good speaker is that away from the listening position or in an adjacent room that the speakers still sound good. Is this a function of off-axis sound or something else?
Thought I would start a thread about my latest auditions, what my goals are, etc.
Background:
I have owned Wilsons, Dynaudios, Zu, and now Devores. I have owned Gibbon Xs for 3 years now and really enjoy their sound - open, dynamic, with good tone. They are very amplifier-flexible which I...
Well folks, here's my baker's dozen - enjoy. Non-audiophile approved, many well recorded of course :)
Olafur Arnauds- "re:member"
Kasey Musgraves- "Golden Hour"
Alva Noto, Ryichi Sakmoto "Glass"
Loma "Loma"
Lord Huron "Vide Noir"
Rival Consoles "Persona"
Virginia Wang "Ecstatic Arrow"
Amos Lee...
It seems there are fewer and fewer of these out there and, surprisingly, we don't have a thread on this topic.
I will define tube-friendly as being able to be properly driven by a 100-watt tube amplifier. That's probably 90db efficient or so in most rooms.
What are your favorite tube-friendly...
I'm sure I will be ripped here for this, but oh well. This is definitely more experimental rock and a bit post-apocalyptic in nature.
I had not heard of this group before, but this record has Radiohead Kid A or Bon Iver cues for Indie fans- works best played from start to finish and designed...
Mine is Justin Timberlake - he's an amazing performer and has some really catchy tunes. I have a friend who does the ProTools sound for his tours and he's very much a perfectionist, but a good guy in person.
Some of his better tracks:
He also did the history of rap with Jimmy...
