@Rensselaer your TT is beautiful. Like you, I am currently running a CTC Reference 301. I have it sitting in an Artisan Fidelity Statement Plinth. (Christopher Thornton was terrific to work with in building a plinth to accommodate the CTC TT.) I am currently running a Reed 3P (10.5 inch) tonearm...
Joey,
Happy for you on the second cartridge. I’m asuming you are still running the VPI Avenger. What is the second TT and tonearm might I ask?
Hope you are having a great New Year.
Best
Al
Thanks Todd. I have found that the Jim Smith ratio has been very close to where I have ended up on my last few pair of speakers. Like you I didn't aim for it initially but I found the ratio ended up being close to where I landed the speakers relative to the listening position.
Todd,
I'm enjoying your thread. It appears the G3 manual recommends the equidistant triangle set up. Are you following that approach? (Since we spoke at dinner last month I'm pretty sure you have moved the position of your Trios.) BTW the videos are very good. Keep it coming.
Regards
Al
@ Marty I actually like this thread. I find it fascinating and illuminating. First, I support the WBF Terms of Service. Not that hard to adhere to IMO. Second, women don't "need" this kind of protection from crassness. That isn't the point of the WBF Terms of Service. Third, for the record I...
FWIW below is some recent data out of the computer gaming industry. Just an example of a thriving hobby with lots of men and women participating. It is not a "kind" environment--lots of trash-talking bravado.
@Ron Resnick FWIW Grado's website lists the Grado Epoch3's Compliance: 20?m/mN.
I'm not sure why Grado would list this compliance number if it was in actuality 10?m/mN. Grado doesn't say whether their reported compliance is at 10Hz or 100Hz. If at 100Hz then the number would need to be...
@mtemur Thank you for the detailed information. I'm interested in knowing whether you have posted any of your results on the vinyl engine site? I note that it allows members to include information they have about both tonearms and cartridges.
@miniguy Thanks for contributing. I will check out the Hi-Fi News test record.
With the significant prices for many tonearms and many cartridges you would think there would be a strong demand for a uniform measurement reference standard. Frankly, because the charts seem more theoretical than...
YT, Instagram, Tic Toc, etc-- these are the leading edge of mass communication today. I agree with @K3RMIT that starting a YT channel doesn't make an expert--but it can attract crowds--and crowds crown their own experts.
Both OCD guy and Jay's Audio are growing subscribers to grow ad revenue...
I follow both OCD guy and Jay's Audio Lab on YT. They are clearly attempting to cross-pollinate their subscribers by appearing in videos together. OCD guy is selling gear--though says he is doing it honestly. Jay is selling his ultra hi-end experiences--listen to this combo--now listen to that...
My experience with "new" music, digitally recorded, and then pressed on vinyl records hasn't been pleasant. The vinyl quality is spotty, the compression mostly always present. A 16/44 CD of the same material generally sounds equal to or better than its pressed LP. Frankly, I don't think these...
David,
Again, thanks for your thoughts. Regarding the threads on WBF discussing resonance frequency, I think I've read all of them, or at least all I could find using the WBF search tools.
Al
David,
Thank you for responding. Based on what I've seen from previous posts of what many folks say is a great match between cartridge and tonearm, I would suggest that in the majority of circumstances, the fundamental resonance charts/calculators would "discourage" the pairing. I'm not sure why...
Possibly, but one could also argue it isn't important at all. If it doesn't apply all the time, or most of the time, or a plurality of the time, then it really isn't meaningful is it? Hopefully someone can help identify what the source of the ranges are then that will help determine when they do...
The fact that folks have great outcomes "outside" the 7-12Hz?, 8-12Hz?, 9-11Hz? standards has me asking the question what is the "standard" upon which these noted "ranges" are based?
@Solypsa Thanks for the reply.
Actually, I didn't know the guiding idea, so that's helpful. And to your question, yes the Lyra Atlas Lambda SL I used as an example is, in fact, my own. I currently have a 10.5" Reed 3P Cocobolo tonearm. I started using it with a VdH Crimson Strad cartridge...
I'm hoping to learn from others on this topic. How reliable is the Tonearm+Cartridge fundamental resonance chart/calculators found at resfreq.com or vinyl engine? What is the actual "target" range for the resonance frequency? Is it 7-12Hz? 8-12Hz? 9-11Hz? And what is the underlying objective...
I am a big believer in Symposium products. Started with Svelte platforms several years ago. Now I have one three level Symposium Ultra Stealth rack and one four level Ultra Stealth rack. I haven't used the Osiris so I can't comment there. What I can say is that this company's products are well...
I'm grateful to the OP for speaking up. I don't care what tone a whistleblower has. And I don't think anyone should conclude Dennis Foley doesn't know anything about acoustical design. They should simply conclude that Dennis Foley is willing to take people's money and not deliver as promised. In...
I second Fremer as a treasure. He did a Zoom call with our audio club in Dallas recently and was gracious, funny, a good listener (not just to music, but to what others were saying) and opinionated. It was informative and highly entertaining.
Jay's Audio Lab is providing a service for a fee. Lots of us provide a service for a fee. Several folks on WBF are actually dealers who nicely try and sell stuff to WBF members: (I'm in favor of that too.) There is no real distinction IMO. Jay's Audio Lab has a different business model than a...
