@Paul1960, Owning 3-different model SoundLabs for over 25-years, I enjoy amplifier conversations about stats. and appreciated your addition to same,
primarily found here!.
My SoundLab amp journey began with a Mark Levinson 336 (350W stereo amp) which I owned.
I choose the Levinson 336 in a shoot-out with Krell FBP 600's. But, that's when I owned Martin Logan reQuests (NOT SoundLabs). In those days, if the shout-out was with SoundLabs, the end result may have been different.
Later, with my SoundLabs and Levinson combo, I simultaneously auditioned Parasound Halo JC1's and Convergent Technology (CAT) Triode JL1's. I didn't leave the Parasounds in long enough to draw a good comparison against my Levinson. But the Parasounds were good/similar and at a lessor price. But, when I inserted the CAT's, they were in another time zone. The CAT's
(meow) controlled the SoundLabs like neither solid state device and everything audio wise I appreciate/prefer, was better! Thus, those ~190lb.ea. (big) CAT monos remained, & the Parasounds were returned, along with my Levinson (which I traded-in for the CAT's).
However, since my first SoundLab pair, improvements have been made in the panels (which are now "PX" ones) and in the transformers. Those changes have made the SoundLabs quite a bit more efficient & easy to drive.
Later, I moved from the CAT 100W (16-power tubes) JL1's, to the 150W (32-tubes) CAT JL3's and then later, to Atma-sphere MA-1 OTL's, which I now own.
Thinking of going back to solid state, but keeping my Atma-sphere's, I've found a recent SoundLab specific discussion started in wthatbestforum
here by jeffreybehr. He went though several different amps as follows
(in no particular order):
PS Audio BHK-600's
Pass XA-60's
Atma-sphere MA-1's
Pass X260.8's
Berning Quadrature Z's
His favorites were the PS BHK600's, Pass X260.8's and Pass XA60's. He chose the later pair (XA-60's) to use with his new SoundLabs.
Assuming SoundLabs and Final stats similiarly respond to amplification (?), I thought I would add to your amplifier experiences in hopes that they may be helpful to folks thinking of stats or owning stats.
BTW, FWIW, SoundLabs can now be ordered in various heights (beginning at 5') and widths, that can more easily fit one's room and aesthetics.
