Anyone else tried the new Intel Skylake CPU? Any graphics problems?

Just bought an Intel i5 6500 CPU for my home theater machine and I'm really disappointed in the graphics quality I'm getting from the on-chip, Intel 530 graphics processor. When I play video files I get a lot of shutter in the middle of the screen that I never noticed before. The recent on-board graphics in Intel CPUs are supposed to eliminate the need for a discrete graphics card (at least for users who just use the machine to watch video). This was my experience with my Ivy Bridge processor (which is now more than 2 yrs old). I noticed a bit of improvement when I went to a Radeon 270x graphics card, but my Ivy Bridge was never as awful as this. I've checked the driver and BIOS settings and found no solution, so I wonder if there's a defect in the chip.

I can't recommend the upgrade in general, unless you have a really old machine. The shift from a 22nm to 15nm process seems like a big deal, the gains in speed and power consumption are less than stellar. Intel calls this their most important processor in a decade...someone will have to explain that to me.

It is what is powering my new music server but because it is a music server, I have not tried to play any videos on it. I will give it a try and report back.

I just built a new X99/Haswell-E i7-5820K based workstation and Skylake is NOWHERE near it in performance (and that's why they are cheaper), so I am not surprised about the video experience on your CPU. I thought about starting a thread about my desktop (used for 5K picture and 4K video editing), but then suspected people would just brush it off as a show-off thread. Still if you are interested, it's an overclocked [4.4GHz/1.3vCPU & 4.0GHz cache/1.25vCPU; +86MHz GPU] system with two graphics cards in SLI configuration, as follows:

OK, I'll write up on it tomorrow; you'll appreciate that I chose a GeForce 970-based card for the H265 native encoding capabilities (the 980 is the other one, but more expensive)

Skylake is not a reduction in die size, it's the same as Broadwell 14nm. Either way, you should not be experiencing any frame issues, this chipset can even handle 4K video. I'd bet it's a driver and/or BIOS problem. Also, your Skylake should perform better than a 2 generation old Ivy Bridge, something is awry..

it is usually the wifi card that causes latency issues and and dropouts. in any rate use latency monitor (http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon) and see which one is the offending driver

Yes, well the 5820K is a beast. The new i7 6700K is just a quad core, with about half the cache. I expect Intel will come out with a comparable performance line in a few months.

I agree with sbo6 that something seems amiss. I updated the BIOS and checked the settings and reinstalled the Intel Graphics drivers, to eliminate the most obvious problems. I doubt upgrading to Windows 10 will help (last time I tried it just looked nice and crashed all the time). I may start a support thread, but I'm sure Intel will blame the motherboard and Asus will blame Intel.

I plan to do a post shortly about putting together a video editing workstation, after just building one myself. I lean toward Radeon graphics cards for editing 4K material; they seem to score much higher than GeForce cards for video editing benchmark tests in Final Cut (not necessarily better for gaming). Also, check out the Sony editing software for PC. I used to think the only viable choices were Final Cut (Mac only) and Adobe Premier (for PC, but with ongoing monthly fees), but recently I found my buddy Cal Lewin was using the Sony Editor for his professional video editing.

For sure I would like to read about it as well as well ack. Now can you do one with a Mac? ;)
The Mac Pro has some similarities and is a nice machine, but they don't make anything that can keep up with the latest PC hardware. You can also go over to TonyX86.com to learn how to build a Hackintosh, which will save you about 80% and allow all kinds of tweaking and hot-rodding, but be prepared to devote a lot of time and energy to the learning curve that goes with getting all the hardware working.

These graphics problems seem to have been corrected by upgrading my OS from Win 7 to Win 10. The shutter has gone completely and the picture quality is what I originally expected. I was planning the upgrade as part of my troubleshooting, but never guessed this would be the problem.

I just started testing a, $100, NVIDIA 740 card for home theater video. I'll try to check back in the next few weeks with some pics comparing the card to the Skylake graphics.

If the OS fixed it, it's likely a driver issue either with Windows (in box) or the gfx vendor..

I suspect the latest Intel driver didn't like Win 7. I re-installed it a few times. Just surprised Intel developers wouldn't assume lot's of people didn't still have Win 7 installed. Alternately, the problem may have been something awry with my particular Win 7 install.

Agreed. Significant changes from Win7 to 8, less from 8 to 8.1 and -> 10.
