The creation of our first active controlled linear tracking tone arm.

In many presentations and conversations the question of a compact linear tracking
tone arm arose again and again. A tone arm that could also be used on many other
record players. A so called stand alone version.

This idea fascinated us three so much that we started planning in 2012.

The long way to the goal - creating the best in the premier class.

We discussed many considerations and case studies and questioned them again
and again. We examined all the scenarios down to the last detail and also carried out
a number of tests.

We made video recordings of various passive linear tracking tone arms and analyzed
them intensively again and again.

We even examined the grooves of a record - after playing them about 20 times with a passive
linear tracking tone arm - under the microscope for damage.

Then it was clear to us that we would never build a passive tangential tone arm.
An actively controlled scanning system was the only target.

Our goal was to create the premier class, the best possible system, to provide
our customers with a system that scans their vinyl records as gently as possible, and
raises musicality to a new, significantly higher level.

Anyone who has ever heard a truly perfect and active tangential scanning will never be able
to get away from this fascination.

- Perfect linear scanning without any lateral forces acting on the needle carrier -
Only the contact weight according to the manufacturer's specifications still exists.

This is the top class of analogue reproduction. There is nothing beyond.
A reproduction exactly as the record was cut in mastering.

Today's modern needle cuts also play an important role here. We can disregard
round needles as they were used in the past or are still used today in very
inexpensive systems.

Today's modern needle grindings are perfect for tangential scanning.
As an example, I will mention the Shibata, van den Hul, and Micro Ridge grindings.

If such a needle is not positioned exactly in the groove at an angle of 90° degrees,
the high and highest frequencies, the harmonics, which are equally present in both
sound channels, are sampled at a minimal time offset. And this definitely leads to interference.

Interferences, which blur the positions of the voices and the instruments just a little,
so they don't represent them so exactly at the point where they stood when they
were recorded.

This is not so serious that one would have to question his setup. But something
is clearly given away, namely the most perfect possible representation of voices
and instruments on all positions. The depth staggering of the stage also loses
a little bit in case of bad adjustment.

In addition, sibilants are amplified in recordings and extended in width.
We all know this, the voice is in the middle between the speakers, but S sounds
are reproduced from left to right on the full stereo basis.

The reason for this is the minimal time offset between the two sound channels.
And that we call interference.

More than 95% of all tone arms are rotary tone arms. They have, no matter
how ingenious they are constructed, so-called misalignment angles.
Values from 2.0 to 2.5 degrees are not uncommon.

If the inaccurate alignment of the rotating tone arm or incorrectly adjusted overhang
or misalignment of the system in the head shell is added, the values are also
sometimes significantly higher.

With an active and continuously perfectly controlled tangential tone arm all these disadvantages are not present.
We are so close to the original that a fascination is inevitable.

An even greater advantage is that records are scanned more gently than ever before.
Provided it is an actively controlled form of tangential scanning - and not a passive tangential tone arm.

And that was also one of our big goals: the perfect scanning and the greatest possible protection of the valuable vinyl.

We didn't want to misuse the groove to push the tone arm - or rape the filigree needle
carrier to move the complete tone arm.

control system that permanently maintains the toe angle at 90 degrees - even with decentered records.

This intelligent control receives the angle information from a distance measuring laser.
The laser can detect 5 micron difference and should query the angle 100 times per second.

We were well aware that we would be investing a huge amount of work, time and money.
Fortunately, we had no time pressure and no financial controlling, which would certainly
have limited our ideas.

In order to achieve the goal of perfect and extremely gentle scanning, there was no shortcut.
We had a long way to go - all in the interests of our later customers who wanted to own
the world's best linear tracking tone arm.

After almost three years, the first prototype was ready.

The tension when it was given life with the control software we developed ourselves was hard to describe.
Everything worked perfectly and smoothly.

Almost everything, because we noticed that the linear motor under certain conditions
was measurable in the audio signal path as minimum noise.

Not audible, but measurable. Of course, this could not remain so.

The customers who would pay a lot of money for this world's best tangential tone arm,
which you can buy for money, must have no doubts. 100% satisfaction and a hitherto
unmatched musicality was our goal.

But how? We had given everything. We had decoupled all moving parts several times,
eliminated resonances, designed magnetic couplings, and so on.

Now only a serious and constructive conversation with the manufacturer of these digital motor controllers,
a conversation with the company Trinamic, could help.

We got lucky. The phenomenon was well known and the laboratories were currently working on it.
Just in time for us we received 3 of these new controllers from the lab for testing.

In addition, we received a lot of support regarding the software and microchip configuration
of the control system.
Everything with the claim to produce the best that is possible for the gentle analogue scanning of vinyl.

in which the problem and also the solution are described very extensively.

The final successful conclusion

After another year with a lot of work and also some other small setbacks it was done.
Our first Dereneville DTT-01 ran and played absolutely perfect.

We were happy to present the analogue music lovers of this world with an active
linear tracking tone arm - just like the cutting machine.

In 2016, we presented this DTT-02 the second active controlled linear tracking tone arm
to the world public for the first time at the High End in Munich.

The media interest was overwhelming. Michael Fremer also visited us.
He was very interested and noticeably impressed.

Many demonstrations followed at various other fairs.

Very often we got standing ovations.
Whenever we made a direct comparison to high-quality rotary tone arms
- with two identical Dynavector DRT XV-1t pickups -
the listeners were completely convinced.

The honorable Wally Malewicz (he may rest in peace) once said: "This is the best,
what I have heard so far - my congratulations on the really successful tone arm".

That was our accolade.

How much time and money we have invested, I don't want to tell you here,
or you'll think we're crazy in the end.

But crazy is the keyword. You have to be that crazy to offer interested customers who
are looking for something very special the best, the world's best linear tracking tone arm,
you can buy for money.

It will be a bit more compact but also a bit simpler to use.

The quality of the music playback will be exactly the same because we have taken
several important components from the “big brother”

The market launch is planned for October/November 2019.

Rainer, total kudos to you. I'm running a passive air bearing linear tracker, Terminator tonearm, and remain in awe of it's performance. You are in a different league.

I guess that's true.
Just on Monday I delivered another record player with my linear tracking tonearm. The pickup was an Air Tight Opus 1
The customer and I had tears in our eyes. He was totally thrilled. His setup was very extraordinary.

The existing setup consisted of the following components :
Exclusively made 4 way horn system with outsourced crossovers, huge Krell amplifiers for the basses
and Kron Audio Kronzilla tube monos for the rest. Sinfully expensive rack systems and Wiring .
Electronics by Einstein , Jeff Rowland and Kondo, among others.
Maybe I can show some pictures. But first I have to ask the customer.

It's above ultra audiophilia; for the music gods who live on the top floor of heaven.

I'm not done just yet digesting it all ... I have to take my time to savor all the flavor.
Without investing the time all is too ... irrelative.

Hi, Gian,
there will be one base attached to the two rear or two left poles.
There will be no sound difference between the two models
because the inner mechanical construction and the electronics are the same.
Only the outer case is different.
But the big one is equipped with symmetric XLR-connectors and the small one
with asymmetric RCA-outputs.

Dear Sir,

Would this leave the the two fronts posts available for two more arms?
With such sophisticated engineering, what kind of maintenance involves living with this arm. Does it require you to install to get 100% out of it.

Btw, I slept really well looking at the pic of your arm, but got up too early to ask you these questions. :D
