What's that plastic "zipper" crap around the faceplate?

I see that stuff on lots of FM gear and can only assume it's there to protect the faceplate edges during shipping. If so, I wonder why people don't take it off?

Really don't care what it looks like as long as it sounds good. Don't need money wasted on bling....

FMA looks the same now as in 1986 when the first Resolution product was released.
I like the old look of FMA - its elegant and timeless.
