Kenwood KFC-XW120 and PDX-M12 Alpine

I have two Kenwood KFC-XW120 400 RMS 2000 Peak Subs and they started smoking when hooked up to alpine PDX-M12 Alpine 1200 RMS is it overheated or just new subwoofers produce a smell when their voice coil heats for the first time.
